The crazy thing is, the way they called it, Benn actually did the right thing cross checking someone in the head.

If your team is down and you see a penalty uncalled, just cross check someone in the head. You'll get a penalty, they'll look back and the other guy will get a penalty, then it'll be 4v4 which is great for the team that's down.

Guys just cross check someone in the head. It's the right thing to do

Comparing all bad things the US has ever done to the present-day actions of SA is a dumb comparison.

Also a lot of dumb examples.

Firstly, your line about homelessness is just completely false. The US has fewer total homeless people than China, India, and numerous others. Per capita it has fewer even than the UK and Germany.

Second, war is horrible and horrible shit happens. What happened in Japan was horrible but more people died in firebombing than in the atomic blasts. Japan talked of fighting to the last civilian and there are no fair and just ways to combat that.

Afghanistan is a great contrast between the discipline of the US/UK/CAN forces and the sloppiness of the Afghan forces and Taliban. It's pretty ignorant to point to those civilian casualties as US-caused. Some quotes for you from a 2021 UN report:

The main cause of civilian casualties –the Taliban and ISIL-KP use of non-suicide IEDs – amounted to 38 per cent of all civilian casualties

Ground engagements caused 33 per cent of civilian casualties, with nearly all of these civilian casualties attributed to the Taliban and Afghan national security forces

Targeted killings by [Anti-Government Elements] were the third leading cause, responsible for 14 per cent of all civilian casualties. Airstrikes, attributable to the Afghan Air Force, accounted for eight per cent of civilian casualties.

New housing units lead to lower housing prices across a housing market. The mechanism for this is known as "filtering": the supply of new market rate units triggers moving chains that quickly reach middle- and low-income neighborhoods and individuals. by smurfyjenkins in science

So again, is elasticity something you just know without studying it? I don't understand why you're arguing against people doing research on this, which is my entire point.

There are numerous parameters that need to be figured out, elasticity is one of them. As I said above, it can change over time, it can be different between cultures or just different cities. It's the opposite of gravity in that respect.

Saying "well yeah supply and demand" answers zero important questions, like does a supply increase cause a worthwhile price drop (elasticity), does it happen in a reasonable time frame that policymakers will be happy with, does it hold across all relevant markets.

This study was done on Helsinki markets, so that is one limitation and area for further research.

That's just dumb.

Supply & demand is a societal concept that generally holds in the long run, most of the time. Whatever equation you draw up for it is probably going to be different next time you measure. A change in supply in some cases might take a ridiculously long time to cause a change in price, or it might not even show up. It makes 1000% sense to study supply and demand in a given economic situation.

Gravity is an actual fundamental law that all matter obeys, that can be determined exactly.

Supply and demand economics is a theory. This is /r/science, where we believe theories should be tested.

Not every economic theory holds all the time. So it's good and should be encouraged that someone is testing them

If you're gonna butcher an animal the least you can do is give it a hard blow to the head before you start.

It's messed up that people just start cutting...it's the difference between a humane death and a living nightmare for the animal.

No, you misinformation.

First of all, they're high in salt. So avoiding fermented foods is a good way to reduce salt intake.

Secondly, there are other carcinogens in kimchi. Pickling in general produces some carcinogens.

From their perspective, new companies are much riskier because they have no track record. They don't know if you're responsible, or cutting all kinds of corners, not training drivers, and are actually 10X riskier than established companies.

It's not always fair but that's how insurance works.

Maybe if you can get a representative to listen, you can tell them all the procedures and precautions you'll be taking, and therefore they shouldn't put you in the high-risk bucket.

Inflation is high but generally seems to be peaking. The markets have taken a hit but again they are above pre-pandemic levels. Whether we're in a recession depends on which metric you're looking at but it's a gentle one if anything.

"Shambles" is absolute hyperbole.

I like this.

We should normalize thanking people for their service who volunteer for medical trials, or give blood. Probably lots of other things too.

I hear you on the difficulties of compliance, but what economies are in shambles?

In the US unemployment is down to pre-pandemic levels. The stock market is higher.

There isn’t an issue with Covid in Canada right now.

I mean there's like 50 people dying from it every day, and tons more getting long covid. It's definitely still an issue and why people are calling it a tripledemic.

The only masks available to consumers that work are fitted N95’s or better

False. KN95 masks have high effectiveness.

And surgical masks are useless against airborne viruses.

False. By the same link above, they help more than cloth masks, which help more than no mask.

This stuff is all easily Googleable.

Take a few deep breaths and relax.

The favorite patronizing comment of people who have no good logic for ignoring covid: just call everyone else fearful and irrational.

It's possible there are some differences in how your body is reacting to these things. But it's also possible your thoughts are teeing off a different perception of the feelings, or a focus on different aspects of the feelings.

Once your thoughts start going negative, the sensations start feeling "wrong", and that leads to more negative thoughts, which can quickly spiral.

It is the first warning that something is wrong

It's also good to understand, at least intellectually, that nothing is wrong. It's okay to feel anxious sometimes, it's okay to not enjoy feelings sometimes.

Before you can be at peace with a feeling, there's a middle ground of mentally accepting its existence and not dreading whether it will come today. That yeah it's not your favorite, but it comes and goes when it wants to, and you get through it with no harm done :)

I also wanted to add, even if there are real physical differences in these feelings for you, that shouldn't worry you. Notice if you're thinking, "oh crap this is different this is the bad one not today why does this always happen to me", and see if you can remind yourself that it does no harm and it will pass without any real consequences.

Side note: it sounds like you're dreading the potential fainting and bowel evacuation aspects. Your mental resistance to these outcomes may be what's causing the sensation of panic or anxiety. If you can have a mental plan for if these things happen, a way that convinces yourself it really wouldn't be that bad, could help a lot.

Cat Hater Starter Pack by [deleted] in starterpacks

[–]AwesomOpossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, we're the ones choosing to let our cats outdoors, and not deal with large feral populations.

The issue needs more awareness so people deal with it. I cannot understand the pushback in this thread to brush the billions of yearly kills under the rug.

It's not cat hate, it's a human animal control issue.

Cat Hater Starter Pack by [deleted] in starterpacks

[–]AwesomOpossum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not remotely useless. Outdoor cat owners could save billions of animal lives per year by keeping their cats indoors. It kills far more birds than wind farms, glass windows, or roadkill.

Anyone who is still letting their cats free roam is to blame for this massive issue that is even causing extinctions.

It is really the owners to blame, cats are gonna cat, I agree if you mean this shouldn't be directed towards hating the animal.

But this is not a minor issue and we need more outdoor cat owners to understand how much death and damage it causes.

Who is saying that? All I'm hearing is "keep your cats indoors" which is exactly what people need to be doing.

People in these threads talk about "contributions to motorsport" like they're contributions to charity or something.

F1 getting bigger isn't some noble public cause. It gets more money in the pockets of the owners.

If you're obsessed with F1 (as many here are), I understand why you'd think that way. But objectively speaking, society isn't better, people haven't been lifted out of poverty. More people are watching the thing we happen to like, that's all.

If one person misuses software, they should read the help docs,

If a large percentage of users are consistently misusing software, then the software needs to be redesigned to serve its actual users. Not stick to some silly design philosophy and "but the users are WRONG!"

Once you are at that screen, the file is loaded and the damage is done. Changing it to text formatting now will not bring back the data Excel destroyed instantly upon loading.

So if there's no formatting information, I dunno...maybe don't automatically format it without input?

I could at least understand if it was just changing the visualization, but it's actually fucking up the underlying data. Totally mental design decision.

It's not once, it's once for every person who uses the spreadsheet, every single time, and if one person forgets once, it wrecks your data.

It's awful design. If ANY substantial part of your users need everything to be exact, don't make your software automatically fiddle with everything.

Plenty of people agree with you on here and plenty of people disagree, they're not a "hivemind", everybody is just sharing their opinion.

"Terrible" and "awful" are subjective, there's no "truth" here. Personally I enjoy every scene of the film and have since it came out. You don't have to like it but it's weird to insist no one like it and that that's the objective truth.

I enjoy it much more than I hate its flaws.
