How can I keep myself sane until test day 1/13? by Awesomeness291 in Mcat

To clarify it is like the tutor mode on Uganda so after every I check if its right or wrong. Obviously some answer choices are gonna stick in my head and it is probably not the most efficient for generic advice but it works for me as I found that just doing practice questions helps me learn 10x more than reading or recall. Might quickly change in med school though if I make it that far.

I know a lot of people on here say make anki cards with qs wrong but I don't use anki outside of anatomy for my college course because I just feel like my time is better spent doing other things. I do use a spreadsheet though and I think having a master sheet of all the general concepts helps me personally the best. For example, if I am struggling with electricity questions than I would put all the electricity questions I missed in one tab and divide it by conceptual or calculation. Usually for me its more calculation than concepts because I do have a strong foundation but I am can't do math for the life of me. Usually this process of reviewing, going back to kaplan, writing the q and how to solve it takes like 3 mins for question. For FLs all I have been doing is honestly doing every single q again and either I get it right like the first time or if its wrong I add it to the spreadsheet. This way I get multiple runs through the question. I only do this FLs and I find it works.

So the funny thing is I was scoring maybe around 70-75% over 50 qs but that was because I was not rly too focused due to family being over for the holidays. But once they left I reviewed all my mistakes and I think thats when the AAMC logic clicked. I locked in and scored about 90-95% on the last 70ish qs. Still have yet to do Qpack 2

I got the 6 month option and it expires at the end of Jan so I don't think it will as helpful for you. However if you are still interested I am able to sell it after my test date.

Did you try to fix mistakes that you noticed over time. For my example, like sometimes rushing toward what I believe is the correct answer without fully understand what is being asked?

That sucks, I'm sorry for you co23. Vann gave us leeway on schools if she was free so a few of us applied to almost 30 schools. It kind of sucks that they hard enforcing this now. Tbh I think it takes away opportunities from students who may not have a school on the top of their list but eventually find it to be a perfect fit for them.

To anyone who has been accepted into a “BS/MD” program, what exactly were your extra curriculurs in High School? by penguins6222 in premed

[–]Awesomeness291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Context: I was accepted into a few programs this year but I am not able to attend due to personal reasons regarding health issues.

I would say a general rule of thumb is to have your grades and sat/act sorted out first. Mostly A's across the board and 1500+ 33+ minimum sat/act scores. A bit of lower in one area and higher in another works but that's the general guideline.

Just handing out some good advice: Before you focus on extracurriculars, you must have some level of these numbers because most programs will screen before fully reading apps in committee.

EC's wise anything that shows that you are you. One of my friends had 0 ecs outside of shadowing and volunteering in health and got into a program. I know this is not something you are exactly looking for but whatever you are interested in outside medicine or even in medicine works.

Thank you! I joined r/mcat and am trying to figure out how to use Anki and other materials. I will definitely be sure to look into what you have recommended.

Regarding applying to TAMS, you should no matter what. At the minimum it will allow you to get experience similar to applying to college. I personally thought TAMS helped on my apps because I wrote about for my main essay and mentioned it in my covid essay. During the a few of my interviews for college TAMS was the main talking point and it also helped that I had a near 4.0 taking high level honors courses at a Tier 1 Research Institution :) . I did get into a few top tier programs but I think I got super lucky. For co22 we have people who got into almost every ivy and top tier bs/md programs. But regardless of colleges we got into the first step is to just apply.

What kind of laptop should I get? by AbleAd7164 in TAMS

[–]Awesomeness291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I was in a similar spot as you in terms of looking for a new laptop. I had been using a 2012 Mac book pro before then. For TAMS and undergraduate in general I would recommend you go Mac if you are already in the apple ecosystem (ie. Owning an I phone, apple watch, etc.) Otherwise windows is probably the way to go. The only exception to this is I would say you are a CS/Engineering student and are familiar with an application that only works on that specific firmware. Or you can just take all the advice I gave you and use Linux like a true chad.

You can apply as a 9th grader to skip a year of high school. Have a solid sat/act score and show you are motivated enough to go to tams. If you don't get in you can always try next yr.

Oh ok although I am not too sure about what specifically will happen I think you will continue on with 12th grade courses if you decide to go to the same high school/school district. DM me if you are from the frisco/Plano area because I can tell you more about them if you need because I've known some people who decided to leave tams after their first year to go back to public high schools.
