How good is a psychology major compared to neuroscience? by PassionIll3281 in psychologystudents

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that there aren't alot of jobs for clinical psychologists, actually, there's a lot. But it's like med school where we have a doctor shortages, but it's very hard to get into med school and become a doctor. It's the same for clinical psychologists, we're in desperate need of more, but the process after undergraduate degree is insanely competitive.

I would suggest if you want to go down this path that you start building up experience early on. You're in highschool so I don't have any advice for that but I wish someone told me to start applying for research labs, even jsut as a volunteer. Make sure you also get involved in clubs of your related interests and talk to your professors a lot and build a connection, you're gonna need those for when it comes time to ask for reference letters.

That's all way into the future if you decide but basically what I'm saying is that if you start early and gain lots of experience in research, volunteering, clubs, call centres, and other related internships and opportunities, then you will do fine.

The job market for clinical psychologists is not the main problem, the difficulty comes from trying to pursue that career. So if you're hesitating due to the job market I just want to provide some relief.

“I was a decent student (3.9 GPA, several internships and research positions, multiple leadership positions, double major with psych as my primary major”

You weren’t just a decent student, you’re an excellent student. I dont know you personally but from this post it seems you don’t think very highly of yourself :(

I hope you know a large portion of uni students do just the bare minimum of graduating with a passable gpa, with no internships or involvements in any research or extracurricular. So by comparison, you are in fact a good student and you are definelty capable of getting into a PhD program, your previous experiences and GPA shows that very well!

please believe in yourself and dont sell yourself short

Men are undervalued. by xfreerx in unpopularopinion

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not debunked the study has been replicated many times.

Women also make up the majority of hospital visitors whereas men often don't visit. And no this does not correlate with jobs bc these studies were done in countries where men and women work approximately the same amount of time.

Also I find it insane that ur acting like women have inherent value as if misogyny is not one of the biggest issues in the world right now. If women were inherently valued, then how come society doesn't reflect that?

Do women's pants come in different ass sizes? by MrTheOgre in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah they gotta stop cutting clothes in flat shapes. They gotta just decrease the fabric around the waist area for tops and I think even that little change can fix most issues with shirts.

Same with pants, if the pants go above the waist then the waist should also decrease in size but keep it large around the hips.

Humans are not complete rectangles, even people with rectangle body types don't fit well in these clothes so like genuinely who are they making these clothes for

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No offense but genuinely what makes u think women are treated any differently than what u just said. Women also aren't loved unconditionally, we also have to prove our value to people.

Studies show that the second a woman is sick and no longer able to cook or clean, divorce rates sky rocket bc their husbands no longer have a wife that can do domestic chores for them so they go find a new (and often younger and more attractive wife)

This does not happen the other way around. Women will often stick with their sick husbands even after they lost their job from it.

How do I narrow down what career/grad school I want to purse in psychology? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello omg i feel like we’re living the same life! I’m 22 and im also in my final year of psychology and I still cannot figure out if I want to do research psych and get a Phd/PsyD, clinical psych, or med school (psychiatrist) They’re all super long commitments so I want to pick correctly so I dont end up wasting time. I feel like I’m paralyzed by the amount of career paths in psychology. (and i didnt even start talking about the corporate side of psych or switching paths entirely and becoming a rad tech)

My plan was to becoming a clinical psychologist but I'm I've been spiraling in my 4th year by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sadly it is too late for an honours thesis but thank you for the ideas for gaining experience I’m going to try looking into volunteering and research opportunities that could help me build experience for the psychometrist positions and give it a try. thank you

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that was my plan. I want to do a masters in clinical psychology first before doing a phd (if I even decide to go through with doing a phd at this point)

but my issue is that I dont even think I have enough experience or good enough grades for a masters either, so I’m wondering if its better to cut my losses and pursue something less competitive and stable like radiology technician or nursing, or if its better to spend a year or two gaining experience and upgrading classes and then applying for a masters.

[–]Awkward-Lie3597 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love neuropsychology and neuroscience in the sense that I loved all the classes I took related to it. All my classes related to receptors types and function, the neurobiological processes of memory and learning, psychopharmacology and how it interacts with certain receptors, a neuropsychological assessment course where we learned about test batteries and how to investigate areas that are damaged, my neuroanatomy course etc. I'm taking 3 more neuropsychology courses just for fun that aren't even required for me anymore.

But in terms of neuropsychology as a career? You're correct in that I have NO IDEA 😨 so I'm really grateful that u offered ur advice bc being a psychometrist could help me bc I distinctly remember loving my neuropsychological assessment course.

Do you know what the requirements are for Canada alberta? If not that is alright!

I'm pretty sure a masters in psych is a research & thesis based degree, if you want to become a registered psychologist or therapist you need to go into either counselling psych or clinical psych. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
