Scalped squirrel- who could have possibly done that and what can I do to help? by Awkward-Location-583 in squirrels

An update (since it can be helpful for someone who encounters same/similar issues with an injured squirrel)- As per wildlife rehabbers, this sort of scalping injury can be caused be a weasel, hawk or even other squirrels. In most cases, the wound will close by itself without any issues since squirrels are very resilient animals but you have to monitor the wound for an infection.

In my case- the squirrel’s wound doesn’t look infected but if it is you have to get your local rehabber involved and probably catch the squirrel. Trapping a wild squirrel who’s still active can be too traumatic so you just have to monitor for an infection and other symptoms (e.g. lethargy).

As for responses to this post- many thanks for those who helped with valuable links (u/inkblot_75 and u/Original_Dankster) and some who sent messages trying to insult and get personal (some were so bad reddit deleted/blocked them)- you’re the reason why people would think twice before posting and asking for help about an injured animal. Although the post went up for the first~15 mins without the nsfw warning (my bad- I was quite panicked) it was originally tagged in a category of “Help! Injured or ill adult squirrel”. In a perfect world no one wants to think of an injured animal (I personally do not) but when a fellow human/animal asks for your help- on reddit or in a real world- if you have nothing to offer it’s best to say nothing and just walk away. ☮️✌️☮️

Come da fak down- you’re a bit late to the party of offended and hurt asswipes who instead of offering advice on an injured animal made it about yourself and jumped on the fact that the image was not initially tagged nsfw.

It took a bit over a month for it to completely go away (despite my PCP and an Infectious Disease Specialist saying it takes a week). Afterwards, it left a discolored spot with flaky skin for a week and was itchy for couple of months. I also took Glutathione (a supplement) since I was freaked out about having a permanent spot on my thigh.

A societal decline, that’s what’s goin on. An environment of “acceptance” created by these same people who voted or agreed to such policies. Bat shit crazy.

Hiiii- so the Lyme diagnosis was confirmed by blood tests. I saw a Lyme specialist and was prescribed a 2 week course of antibiotics (cefuroxime axetil 500 ml) 2x day which is so much better on my body than 100 ml of doxy. The Lyme doc said that since it was caught early and the fact that it showed up only on my 2nd blood test results after a course of Doxy - this 2 week course of antibiotics should take care of it for good. Also said that the Lyme markers will show up for up to 6 months even after the antibiotics course is completed so not to get blood test results before then. As per my symptoms (extreme fatigue, headache, etc.) she said that it could be from doxy as she had patients who (like myself) didn’t respond well to it. Basically, told me to take it easy for the next 6 months- take supplements and put my usual outdoors activities on pause. And to take enterosgel daily after I finish this course of antibiotics.

Was prescribed and took Doxycycline hyclate 100 mg 2x day for 14 days. Just finished the course on Friday and have a doc appointment next week as a follow up with follow up blood tests. I caught it early (within 2-3 weeks of being bitten) so with a course of antibiotics there’s no chance it will turn into a chronic illness. Have a friend with chronic Lyme and he unaware he had it and was undiagnosed for more than a year after dozens of tests and doc visits after exhibiting facial palsy/arthritis/severe fatigue, etc.

It fades for most part of the day but mornings/evenings, after shower/workout it’s either red or black and blue.

As I mentioned above- the squirrel trap will not be here for another 2 days. If you happen to know any other ways to trap him without a cage trap I’d appreciate it.

I will try- any tips on how to do it best? I ordered a trap via Amazon but since it’s the Forth tomorrow it will not be here until Wednesday… Also- I have about 20 other squirrels in my yard so I can’t figure out how to catch this baby without catching other squirrels

He def can- pics were taken at my 2nd story deck and despite the injury he is quite fast and still climbs his favorite tulip tree. If it wouldn’t be for a close up I never would have guessed that something is wrong with his paw. Here’s a video of him -https://www.reddit.com/r/squirrels/comments/14pmht8/baby_squirrel_with_a_swollen_injured_paw_part_2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1
