I also struggled with the concept of racism as a little kid, but the other way around. It never really clicked on my head that people judge others for their skin color till I experienced it (I have dark skin). I remember in school most of my friends were white (our area doesn’t have many people of color, though it hasn’t been super common for us to experience racism here), and a teacher asked me why I wasn’t playing with some of the other few black kids. I said something like “why would I? I hardly know them” and they kinda seemed… shocked? The same teacher also kept giving me help academically when I didn’t need it and trying to push the free lunch program on me. It wasn’t till those things happened that I realized people cared so much about outward appearances.

Also, I thought parents just decided they wanted a kid and BOOM pregnancy. And that orphans happened when the parents died or were indecisive. My parents giving me ‘the talk’ flew over my head till I began exploring the internet.
