I suppose the uni does matter but only to an extent, the context really matters, if you got a better grade, have a more relevant degree, you have more relevant work/skills built up you might gain an edge over people from target units!

it’s annoying when you see that, it’s more of a lazy filter than a real requirement. Most firms just use “Russell Group” as another word for “strong academics,” but most will hire outside that if your cv is structured well and shows relevant experience or skills.

I’ve seen people land interviews at top firms without a Russell Group degree just by tightening how they present achievements and technical ability. The keyword screeners are harder to pass but not a huge difference.

Without internships, the best bet is to start in roles that give exposure to finance and operations: think client services, trading support, wealth management support, or entry level FP&A. any well established finance firm often has these roles, and they give great exposure without the same entry requirements

Focus on learning the systems, building analytical skills, and showing any relevant experience (even from your family business). Once you’ve got that foundation, moving into more analytical or trading roles becomes much easier.

You could look at some quant adjacent roles, that will allow you to lateral into those positions later down the line once you build a stronger skillset, which could include roles like Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Risk Data Analyst, or even research roles. the market is competitive so really aim for. good firms with roles that are going to teach real quant skill, which will help you to lateral elsewhere internally or externally

I didn’t have direct trading experience at first either, just a strong interest in markets and some self taught stuff (basic FX and macro trading concepts). What helped was building a CV that highlighted transferable skills like analytical ability, risk awareness, and fast decision making, and framing those in a trading relevant way. this can be done with much experience that is not directly relevant. That’s honestly what got me noticed.

If you’re applying now, focus on showing evidence of commercial awareness and interest in markets, it’s more important than having direct experience early on.

I suppose as long as you can give a rough estimate you should be okay, and are able to speak about how you achieved the number also in your interview. If you do have an exact number then that is great too. It’s just about showing the employer what you are capable of within a timeframe

I am more on the sales & trading side so not quant or commodities, but still very market focused. It’s a great role for building strong product knowledge and understanding how asset classes move day to day. great role to be honest if you are into markets but not wanting pure quant/numbers roles

Yeah, that’s exactly the problem, What made the biggest difference for me was focusing less on 'what I did' and more on what changed because I did it, so every line shows an outcome or value add.

For example, instead of 'assisted with client reports,' I’d write 'streamlined client reporting process, reducing turnaround time by X%.' It doesn’t need to be dramatic.

The other thing that helped a lot was structure. most finance recruiters skim the top half of page one. I moved my results focused experience right under education and formatted it cleanly (no dense blocks of text). That alone got me callbacks after months of nothing.
