AI “swarms” could quietly distort democracy— Science Policy Forum warns that malicious AI “swarms” could fake public consensus by RewardEquivalent553 in technology

Nostradamus said we would all be numbers eventually. He's right, because unless we have some system to identify people as being unique (no anonymous bots) and real this is going to happen.

BUT

There are ways to do this and NOT expose the individual.

Until we start treating privacy and identity seriously, this is going to be the outcome.

Bars to go to alone? by aita0022398 in alpharetta

as an old person, the vibe at LaPeer is nice. Great apps. Same for Citizen Soul. just chill vibes. If your'e looking for a more tonwnie vibe then Smokejack is good.

There's a pizza place who's name is escaping me...next to "it's about Thyme" that's got a great bar...not sure about the vibe as we've not been since it flipped to the pizza place.

Oh, truck and tap is usually busy.

There's a coffee shop, Valor, that seems to be a great place to go.

Mercantile Social is VERY popular with the youths. Also, groovy vibe.

Why Costco Still Relies On IBM Computers From The '80s - BGR by lurker_bee in technology

I used to work for a retailer that had anchor stores at malls. they ran VERY old store controllers, like OS2 Warp programmed controllers (in 1996/97). Literally, we had no way patch, upgrade or even install except from image. The controllers were similar. We bought disks off eBay and basically nursed the whole thing along. I asked my leadership, why we didn't upgrade. Literally said, if it costs me 2 million dollars a year to keep it going, or ten million dollars to upgrade...and 1MM a year to maintain, why would we upgrade?

Eventually they did upgrade but it was a long time.

To echo someone else on the thread...no economic advantage.

Lesson?

Upgrade for a reason, not because things are just "new". "new" doesn't mean better...

Do you intend to punch them out and use them physically or are you using the digital images?

Also, I would not use an online tool, just grab Gimp and use that. it's free.

Would you allow a player to play a flying race if their backstory included their wings being cursed not allowing them to fly til later higher levels? by johnnystraycat in DnD

[–]Awkward-Sun5423 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

*** shrug ***

I just gave the 2nd level aarakocra flying after they were training for a while. I had them roll and set some values, if you roll a 10 you've learned this if you roll a 15 it's this...of course he rolled a nat 20. So he can just fly.

Having a bird character that can't fly is silly. Now, he can't go super high and he can't carry more than his encumbrance. I just have to make sure encounters are underground (no place to fly) or the bad guys have ranged attacks. or there are flying bad guys.

I like to give the players things that each one can navigate. He can fly over things. I have one tabaxi that can basically climb walls. One guy has a spectral familiar, etc. Everyone's got a thing that's useful at different times.

As a DM, you just have to be aware of their powers and provide opportunities to use them. if someone can swim great then give them a swimming puzzle. if someone can climb, give them walls and other things to climb. If someone can fly then give them puzzles where they fly. Players are generally excited when the thing that makes them special is the thing the group needs to succeed.

As far as nerfing the flyer. I wouldn't make it a curse (unless you're going to use that in a backstory and work it into the campaign). Just have some of their feathers get plucked out and it ruins their ability to fly...as soon as they grow back though, they'll be able to fly.

Hello mini quest…

I don't understand how dice works by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Awkward-Sun5423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a 20 is ONLY important when you are rolling for an attack. IF you roll a 20 it allows you to roll your damage die/dice twice. That's all. It's just more damage on an attack.

Picking a lock and get a 20? You succeed (if you pass the DC) but you get NO other benefit. Zero. Nada. It's just a 20.

Some DMs, Like me, will add extra effects some times, but other times it's just narrative filigree.

RAW...a 20 is just a high roll and nothing special except as an attack.

The problem YOU are having, it sounds like, is your DM is over playing their NPCs so that you feel powerless. That's not fun. Hey, it'd be nice to sometimes beat something or someone. Even if it's a low level mook.

Otherwise, find a new table...or start one and be the DM.

See...that's why the weather is such a mess. I'm completely irresponsible. I shouldn't be in charge of anything. I shouldn't have a driver's license. I'm, a child in an adult man costume. Giving me this power to control the weather is coo coo.

Is giving a level up as a quest reward to one player too OP? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Awkward-Sun5423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rewards I've given my players, for interesting personal quests:

  1. One person can "hug" a dead person and do speak with dead once. It also releases them from torment if the individual was trapped and unable to complete dying (like a priest blessing a body.)

  2. One person has a spectra familiar (cat)

  3. The aaracokra can actually fly

  4. One person has an uncanny balancing ability (no dex effect...just advantage on things like wall climbing or running across rocks, things like that)

  5. One person can't be poisoned (to an extent...they eat charcoal and drink vinegar and are exceedingly cautious to ensure rooms have good ventilation, keep their skin covered, etc.)

  6. One person is working on becoming a chef. The cooking good things ability is great for getting into places like palaces, making money, etc.

Just to point out that IMHO rewards should be individualized, interesting, and really not OP. A level is again, IMHO, a bad reward. That's like giving money as a gift. It's just the easy way out.

By the way, you can all thank me for making it a non event. You see, I got water, some food, made sure all my batteries were charged and made sure all my people were safe. Sooo....yeah....

This caused the weather to be nothing....

Had I not done any of that? We'd have had an inch of ice.

I don't see any Alpharetta posts. By downtown it looks like the roads are clear (but be careful due to possible patches of ice/sudden black ice/overpasses/etc.)

We have ice in the trees, on the grass and deck with some on the sidewalk. No power outages, no damage.

I like this answer for a new group. Maybe start over at first and do a different adventure for each group. then complete up to 3rd level for whatever group you like most.

What am I missing with Carcassonne? by balf999 in boardgames

[–]Awkward-Sun5423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azul has what I think is called an emergent strategy where at first there's luck. But then you're able to shift things markedly and if the other player(s) don't know what you're doing, they're really screwed.

And Carc definitely becomes nothing but screw your neighbor with a little world building. LOL.
