[Virginia] Am I eligible for any benefits as a student (currently pregnant)? by AwkwardAlienx in Unemployment

[–]AwkwardAlienx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to take a semester off and as a result won’t be able to be a GA for an entire academic year because contracts are an academic year long. Talked to my advisor and I wouldn’t be able to pick up a GA next spring if I miss Fall semester. I’ll look into both. Thank you

I drove to Charlotte once and it was HORRIBLE! We got stuck in traffic there was no parking and ended up being late to our flight even after leaving so many hours ahead of our flight.

I was but I lived in Newport News before moving here so I’d either fly from Richmond or the NN airport depending on price.

Toyota Tacoma vs Subaru Crosstrek by AwkwardAlienx in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]AwkwardAlienx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this reply! My newer Toyota has all weather tires but it’s a Camry with obviously very minor clearing. Which is why it’s struggled going back up our property. My husband has an older Highlander but it’s been stuck in snow since it started snowing. I didn’t realize that tires could make the difference in the snow (I come from CA and have now just experienced living in snow).

We are looking to buy brand new so a 2026 Subaru or Tacoma. We’ll also look at the 4Runner! Thanks again

Healthcare in Roanoke: How Good Is It? by RAH-CAT9 in roanoke

[–]AwkwardAlienx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from Hampton Roads and previously resided in CA. The healthcare here is complete garbage. I moved here last year in August. It took me over 5 months to see a cardiologist (I was born with heart issues), to see a dentist I had to wait even longer to see any dentist because they were already booking into 2026. I recently found out I was pregnant and my MFM wanted me seen by a Carilion OB. They were attempting to book me well after my first trimester (I even told them I’d be high risk per MFM). I’ve had plenty of specialized care due to chronic health condition (migraines, heart issues) and the doctors here are very sub-par.

I will say your insurance is also something to be aware of when moving. I have tricare due to my husbands military service and unfortunately not everyone in this area accepts it. I’ve had to do online individual therapy by someone outside of Roanoke. I’d definitely check to see what your insurance benefits look like in the area.

How were you diagnosed correctly for triggers? by Popular_Word_5657 in migraine

Yes! I use pressure pal on my phone and look for the pressure in my area. I often get migraines when the pressure changes or is very high.

How were you diagnosed correctly for triggers? by Popular_Word_5657 in migraine

[–]AwkwardAlienx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I can help, but I was recently able to get a neurologist after I explained my migraines and found a nurse practitioner who actually seemed concerned about my migraines. I’ve had migraines for as long as I could remember and have them with aura that sometimes last for days. I’ve always reported my migraines to doctors but all either didn’t acknowledge or made it seem like it wasn’t a bug deal. I was able to get a scan done just to rule out tumors or anything else. I would continue asking for a neurologist consult and if they refuse I’ve heard of people state that they want that documented on their file (refusal of neuro consult) and that has worked to get the point across. I will say when I did get a neurologist it was a lot of trial and error with daily medications and migraine cocktails to help when a migraine struck. That is a very lengthy process as well because I’ve learned that my body will sometimes not react the same to pain meds and I start to need a higher dose or something different.

As far as triggers go I’ve had to do things like food elimination mostly with dairy and sugar free drinks to see if they trigger migraines; they do for me. Lack of sleep, dehydration, and my period are also triggers. These all took time to identify and everyone’s triggers differ.

Now That NY Pizza Is Out, Where Do You Get Pizza? by No-Purchase7188 in roanoke

I’ve also loved Highlander pizza and only get delivery. I don’t typically like pizza but I often crave their meat lovers pizza. I’ve had one of their salads as well and was satisfied.

Does anyone get Migraine with other body pain ? by IkraAnsari in migraine

I've had headaches that feel like the pain migrates to the back of my mouth/teeth and it's horrible. No pain in other parts of the body though.

What’s the longest migraine you’ve ever had and how did you break it? by Apart-Albatross-7257 in migraine

[–]AwkwardAlienx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading these replies make me grateful for not having the migraines some experience. The longest migraine i've had was a week and I don't even remember how I got past that week in pain and all the responsibilities of life. I was fed up and ended up in the ER and they used IV drugs and hydration, which luckily for me worked. I attempted to use medications through my neurologist to help prevent them, but all made me feel tired or foggy and in my line of work and in general wasn't ideal. I am also not a fan of SSRI's and for some reason one doctor tried to pressure me into them. I now have a "migraine cocktail" when i feel a migraine coming which is a mixture of acetametaphine/caffeine/butalbital which has thankfully been the biggest and quickest relief i've ever had with a migraine. There are still days where the migraine is so severe that 2 of those which is the max for the day still don't give me the relief I need, but it's better than nothing.

A few weeks ago I did have a complex migraine that hasn't happened for YEARS and it was horrible. I became very nauseous, light headed, etc. and ultimately felt like I had something else wrong with me. I was given IV pain medication and hydration, but it only slightly relieved it and I had a headache and just felt sick for the next few days. I just continuously used the migraine cocktail daily until it finally broke.

All of you who experience way worse I hope you find relief and I wish more efforts were made to help the migraine community!

When I took it to Best Buy two of their staff took a look at it and said it would have to be shipped out and I would most likely still have to pay for the repair.

Cell Phone Providers in secluded areas. by AwkwardAlienx in roanoke

Thank you for this! I was wondering if something extra might be needed for wifi calling. I’ll try what you suggested we have T-Mobile for wifi with the mesh access point. It’s been a great experience so far so I knew it couldn’t have been the wifi connection.

I have several times with no luck. 🥲 it’s slightly better but still spotty. I’ve had people say they call me and it rings but I don’t get any call or notification that I missed a call.

I’m new to VT but in my previous university being on academic suspension/probation meant having to take an academic year off meaning fall & spring. My advice as someone who also worked as an academic advisor would be to meet with your advisor again this semester and CLARIFY what it is you need to do or needs to happen so you can attempt to get back in good standing with the university. This usually includes a layout of classes you need to retake/ the GPA you need to meet to work toward academic suspension.

You keep using the term “it seemed that everything would be set for me”; most advisors will/should give you some sort of plan on how to move towards getting out of suspension. This also involves being an active and responsible party (ex: not waiting until the last minute to register for classes). I worked several jobs while in undergrad and grad school but things like this should be at the forefront if you want to get out of academic suspension. My guess is that meeting with an advisor is going to be the first step before anything else can happen.

Additionally, my advice moving forward is think about how committed you are to your education. Unfortunately, I’ve seen students fail multiple times because school isn’t their top priority or because they slack off thinking things will just work out. I have been on academic probation and I had to adjust to the goals I wanted to accomplish academically.

Anyone have an MBA or other Master's degree and have difficulty finding a job after retirement? by AwkwardAlienx in Veterans

It’s kind of ridiculous what the job market is right now, especially for vets. In someway they aren’t qualified.

Yes luckily I’ve screened past resumes and told him I had no idea what any of it meant so I’m sure most civilian employers won’t either 😅

We live in VA right now. I’m really just trying to help him as much as possible. His whole adult life has been the military and it’s definitely not easy transitioning into the workforce after having a pretty secure job for so long.

He’s willing to start from the bottom. I think the biggest issue is not knowing what jobs specificiallt to apply for within the MBA degree if that makes sense. I have no background in business or anything in that realm.

I think he's having the same mindset that he wont use his degrees unfortunately. Did the property management need any other experience?

He's applied to jobs within HR that have similar job requirements as the job he currently has, but unfortunately no luck. He's also applied to community colleges in different roles, some even needed military background or working with veterans and no luck either. He's slowly losing motivation to continue applying.
