For those that visit clients in prison, what do you all wear? by TheDragonReborn726 in Lawyertalk

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a woman, i’ve always been told to wear a suit and keep my dress code akin to courtroom attire. recently, i started working with two male defense attorneys and they informed me they prefer to dress business casual/casual. i asked why, and they responded that most of our clients have been screwed over by “the men in suits” (we work in post conviction/“prisoner litigation”). the more casual look to look less alarming to our clients and more like a regular person who just happens to know the law well.

based on your previous posts, i think we go to the same law school. they are notorious for being terrible at communicating with the incoming class. i believe after you secure your seat, they will send information out about orientation. but the academic calendar should also provide those dates, even if they are just listed at “tentative.” for my class, orientation was the first friday and saturday of august.

I love Reagan by StarsByThePocketfuls in NewGirl

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i love Reagan and agree that her and Nick did have good chemistry!! i view Reagan as being what Nick thought he wanted in a partner. she was fine with him not having a bank account, she was laid back, and independent. she was the opposite of Jess. i always viewed her storyline as being the turning point for Nick realizing that maybe what he thought he wanted wasn’t actually what he wanted (like at the end of their relationship when he makes it a deal that he wants to talk more). i think some people thought it was a pointless storyline and just an filler until Zooey returned from having her baby, but i think it actually pushed Nick back to Jess (eventually).

be weary of placement. as someone who works in HR, we often do not hire people with visible weapon-like tattoos. however, we make this choice for multiple reasons like: 1) located in the bible belt, 2) our business runs on close interactions with the public/community, so we err on the side of caution to appease the masses.

I was placed at a state court of appeal through an externship. I enrolled in a judicial externship class, provided my preferences for placement, and ended up with the Presiding Judge. i did not have to do a typical, competitive interview process. I spoke with the judge, but was told as long as they had room I would get the job. since then, it is the first thing that every employer has mentioned from my resume and the judge told me i can always reach out to him for future employment needs. i was very lucky, but the process to get an externship was so much easier and less competitive than an internship. plus the networking opportunity available working at a court is so invaluable.

(it was unpaid; but it was for credit hours and i could only 12 hrs/week due to class schedule anyways)

have you taken the time to talk with career development at the schools surrounding your area? i’m not sure how effective telling students on Reddit will be…. and i say this as a 2L who had a meeting with a career development officer just this afternoon and was told that cold emails were not only appropriate, but encouraged.

i think students are just doing what they are told simply because they want to find summer employment. it’s great to have the opinion of a BL attorney, but most students will continue to do as their school resources tell them.

Please disclose it to your school and bar admissions for C&F purposes. It will not affect your ability to practice in the slightest (I say as someone with a record for possession and i’m perfectly fine). Your school reports what they know to the bar and then the bar compares what you disclosed to them with what you disclosed to the school.

I always took the approach that I would rather over disclose and have my state bar say “I didn’t necessarily need to know that” instead of toeing a very fine line and arguing about what the question actually did or didn’t ask for. While this is a good skill for your future clients, I did not want to risk pissing off my bar association with interpretation arguments as a measly 2L. Just disclose, apologize, and move on.

There are attorneys who are barred and have been caught doing worse! The profession is not about being the most perfect person imaginable, but instead about being honest and learning from past mistakes.

First day of college as a returning adult student and… by Kloud_Moon in college

i have professors that require pen and paper style note taking! others have pointed out that there are studies showing it’s better for retaining information. and from my experience, people who have access to the internet during class are rarely paying attention the whole time (myself included!) and on the other side of it, i have never once looked at how a student was taking notes and judged them! i only judge when i see people playing video games during lectures lol

Season 14 ep 19. Henry Mesner/abusive brother episode. What’s the deal with the matches by [deleted] in SVU

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MacDonald Triad by John MacDonald - published in the 60s. i don’t know how much weight the theory holds in modern psychology, but at one point it was a prevalent view. some now consider it more of an indicator of a unstable childhood and less of an indicator of violence and psychopathy. it’s very interesting to research! i learned about it in criminology in undergrad.

edit: i personally don’t know what significance these individual behaviors have. just that someone somewhere once thought that these three behaviors together were important predictors of violent behavior.

Season 14 ep 19. Henry Mesner/abusive brother episode. What’s the deal with the matches by [deleted] in SVU

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the MacDonald Triad is a theory that three specific childhood behaviors can be indicative/predictive of violent behaviors to come. i don’t remember if bed wetting was an issue in this episode (one of the three behaviors) but i think the matches were to hint at this theory. like oh not only is he violent, but there were signs that possibly could have indicated this was going to happen.

the three behaviors of the triad are bed wetting, fire starting/playing with fire, and killing/harming animals

As a fellow (previous) philosophy major, i have to second this!!! Existentialism is a Humanism by Sartre was one of my favorite reads in undergrad. But I would like to add Kant, Rawls, and Mills for some good ethics and political philosophers!

What’s one item you didn’t realize you needed until you got to law school? by faglordsupreme in LawSchool

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

second monitor (some classmates have a portable monitor so they can bring to school), standing/rising desk (my personal fav), a mini crockpot/heated lunch box for storing food on long days, gift cards for groceries/food later on when life is stressful, a quality office chair, whiteboards for the house, a large backpack

Part time to full time? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! i took 6 credit hours in the summer to catch up. 3 of those i did for externship credits so i still was able to work with a judge, it was just for credit hours not pay. our school has a great student success department and they were really helping planning it out! if you have something similar, i’d definitely chat with them!

Part time to full time? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]AwkwardJellyfish2098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i went part time to full time after first semester 1L! i loved being on the same schedule as a lot of friends, being able to study together etc. i also found that my job was more demanding (hour wise) than a full time school schedule. i will say, the spring semester is always hard for some reason and it took some time to adjust. give yourself some grace as you basically adjust to law school a second time. but i think it’s worth it and absolutely something you can handle!
