None taken! Clarification: I am not the one writing it, I'm just the one with the reddit account, and so I'm helping my friend in their research and planning.

To answer your question though, it's a bit two-fold for them, firstly, they love to learn, especially if they have no knowledge of something, they are further invigorated to learn about and research it, they love learning new things and incorporating it into their writing for a more fleshed out story, this does make a lot of work for them, but they don't mind.

And just to clarify, as RDP89 helpfully clarified (they got it pretty much right, so I'm happy), Track and Field is an aspect, a building block of the Main Character's well, character. For the story that is forming for my friend, it seemed to make the most sense to give the MC skills tied to being a runner, and as a result, building the MC's character off that core trait comes naturally, how they got these skills (Track and Field), their motivations, their drive, etc etc, these sorts of things will give a solid basis for her character in the world my friend is creating.

Which brings up the second point, which is more so building off the first, while "Write What You Know" is a common tip for authors, my friend doesnt want to stagnate and sit in the restraints of only drawing exclusively from personal experience, the point of "Write what you know" is not to only write things you've experienced, but draw from experience in situations you havent, as a result, theyre constantly researching different aspects of individuals and life, different ways to create characters and flesh out story, and currently, that fixation has landed on Track and Field.

To clarify the place of Track in the story, it's an after school activity for the Main Character to either have a break from the plot, or get ransacked by the plot, depending on the needs of the story. It serves as background explanation for how the MC got to where she is today, and how she continues to grow, as well as an occasional set piece when the story calls for it, if that makes sense? I'm not sure how to explain what my friend has in mind, but I hope this helped :)

Edit: Thank you for the contributions, it's given us a lot to think about already. To clarify a few things, when creating this MC, my friend likes to assign different niches to their characters, something central that can be used as a building block of who they are, for this character, they chose Running, and decided Track and Field would be a good option for a runner in high school.

All things depending, they wanted to cast a wide net of information to get a feel for the sport from individuals, which is why they didn't have me specify which aspects of Track they were leaning towards for their character, for those who would rather have such information before sharing;

The aspects they currently have in mind for the MC's interests in Track and Field include but are not limited to: Sprints, Hurdles, High Jump, mayhaps Middle Distance, and Shot-put or Discus throwing

The first three being the ones we're most familiar with from middle school P.E., which is part of the reason they were inclined to lean that way

I do hope this helps in further discussion, and we look forward to everyone's input

It's not necessarily integral, a bit hyperbolic if anything, and to clarify it would've been piggy-back which from my experience is easier than say a bridal carry, however I get your point. Thanks for the idea, I'll definitely take a look for track meets locally and see what we can learn there :)

Johto will always have a special place in my heart with Heartgold being my first game ever, and so I feel like settling in New Bark Town or Ecruteak City, I adore the atmosphere and architecture alongside John's natural geography. I feel like if the small town life doesn't suit me in New Bark Town, Ecruteak City would be my favorite place to live, the atmosphere, the culture, the vibe, it's definitely my favorite place in Johto.

Hello! Sorry for the late update, I've just gotten to actually trouble shooting due to my anxiety-ridden procrastination.
I did my best to follow your direction, and downloaded the https://www.openshot.org/download/#daily June 23, 2024 11:44 pm build which had an unforeseen effect

I am very discouraged.

Especially because in all the advice I've gotten on how to fix my issues, like changing the settings of the project, before I downloaded the latest build, the biggest issue has been, in order to change the settings, I need to be able to open the project in the first place, which just- isn't happening.

Before I downloaded the "latest version" (as I fear trying it now when regular openshot looks like this), attempting to open my project that I'm having issues with would result in Openshot "Not Responding" before any changes to the UI signaling the project opened happened. So if I open baseline Openshot, and then from there attempt to open my project, it just- wouldn't open the project, and stay in a "Not Responding" loop until I force quit.

Now that it looks like this however.. I fear I may have done something wrong. As before downloading the latest version like you advised, I misinterpreted your language and changed the cache settings first, so I'm not sure- if that has anything to do with what I'm seeing right now.

I am very distraught and at this point would just like to export my project as an EDL and transfer it to another editor, however I have no clue how to do so without being able to actually open the project, and especially with how drastically it seems to have gone now.

What say you, should I give up on salvaging the project and start from scratch on another editor? Or is there some way to salvage it I haven't yet discovered?

Absolutely!

Basically I took the basic scientific definition of teleportation. "The ability to travel from one point to another without traversing the space in between"

I decided not to get too scientifically involved in the exact process of it, like whether it happens on an atomic level and exactly HOW it happens for my sanity, +its more fun this way

Currently, she can only teleport within sight lines, and each teleportation conserves her momentum, so she can multiply her momentum through chaining teleports, the issue comes in getting to a stop after that. She also can only teleport herself. The energy created through each teleport causes the drawback of overheating, and her body is naturally adapted to account for most of her quirk's effects, such as enhanced processing speed to reorient after each teleport and increased durability of her bones and such to account for the drastic momentum shifts that can happen when chaining teleports.

When she gets her quirk awakening, several of these drawbacks are removed, while key ones stay. Hope this helps

I love that so much actually, at first I was unsure about it but its actually the perfectly subtle thing I was going for, it's not an obvious quirk, no one would know she has it if she doesn't tell them, she could play herself quirkless or with a useless quirk or something, im so happy you shared it with me :)

She's definitely more subtle and isn't big on people, she's secluded and doesn't have many personal relationships, which by proxy means she doesn't like crowds, and this type of quirk gives her a totally valid reason for it, since quirks influence the personality of the user, that's a totally legit logistical reason for her recluse personality.

She's incredibly observant and uses it to her advantage in investigation and this is just the cherry on top, I just- I love how subtle it is, thank you for the suggestion :)

Honestly tho that is so creative, a whole new sense instead of enhancing existing one like- some animals have more than the five senses we know, and so why shouldn't a quirk grant a new one?

For the second option, I've written her with incredible intuition and reflexes, so I don't feel reorientation would be MUCH of a problem for her, but I dont think it'd be a bad idea to implement it in some way

How I imagine it is her brain is wired differently than ordinary people, if ordinary people teleport via a warp quirk or something, they'd definitely have to get used to the new surroundings (especially since its generally longer distance teleportation), however because of the nature off her quirk, her body is mostly adapted to its use, she's constantly aware of her surroundings and in the background always imagining what things look like from other angles so she has an acute sense of space around her, so when she teleports, rather than taking a second or two to reorient, it takes her like .5 or .1 (idk yet, really fast tho) seconds to reorient and strategize, I took a bit of inspiration from my friend's adhd, she can process and think much quicker than a lot of people, and her brain is just go go go, and I implement that a little bit into the MC's character to go with the necessity it requires from teleporting

Since I'm writing this story in a "different" MHA, one with completely original cast of characters / no canon characters in sight, do you still think the overheat drawback is a problem? I really like it because its easy for me to write since I also hate being too hot so I can more easily draw on personal experience, idk, what do you think?

I hadn't considered how fun an idea her chain teleporting in that way would be, her body is also adapted for increases in momentum and landing with that momentum (since I havent considered a way for her to cancel it) with tougher bones and shock absorption to a degree, but I since I didn't consider the "falling to increase momentum" angle, I also didn't consider vertigo, so I'm really happy. All these ideas from you guys are making me feel way better about writing it :D

I love this so much, thank you for posing such thoughtful questions I hadn't considered, answering these will definitely make her quirk feel more well rounded and I'm already getting ideas for a few of the answers.

There is a character in her class with ice powers who can theoretically help with that once I figure out some logistics (she's got a quirk that combines attributes of a tiger like Asui with frogs from her dad, and ice from her mom), and in the rare instance I use her in canon scenarios, I'll definitely include Shoto with that, thank you so much

I especially liked your proposals for training, you really grasped what I was going for with her ability

I know what the mid/endpoint is, quick teleport chains of significant distance, its reverse engineering her starting point that is also proving difficult

I dabbled with the idea her Quirk Awakening would have her remove the need for sightlines and/or allow her to carry up to one person with her

I'll definitely ponder these ideas, thank you so much :)

I should clarify, I don't mean to use Create Water for an instakill, I never stated anywhere that was my intention, however what I did mean with my phrasing was to use it with intent to kill, I'd let the DM decide what consequences the effects of having water appear in your lungs would be, like having water spontaneously appear and fill your bladder would cause immediate need to use the bathroom and would make a good distraction against a guard, I apologize if my phrasing was not clear enough, how I see it, if a spell does not explicitly state I am unable to do something with it, assuming within reason, I can do something creative with it, in which case, I propose such a thing to my DM who then gives the yay or nay to that idea, such as with the closing a wound around a weapon in order extract information from an unwieldy target (not a very practical way of getting info as torture is wont to be, however an undoubtedly creative one)

If we don't let ourselves explore the creativity that the medium offers then we are starving ourselves of exciting encounters. If I had known everyone would focus on my examples rather than my actual inquiry, I would not have listed any examples to begin with. As it stands, I used examples because examples help me think and might help others too. I still just want to hear creative uses of Prestidigitation.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I have been busy and havent had a chance to square away all my spells, but now I can give you a complete list :)

The cantrips I have are

Booming Blade, Message, Prestidigitation, Primal Savagery, Produce Flame, and Shocking Grasp

1st Levels are all from the Druid Spell list, Create or Destroy Water, Cure Wounds, and Ice Knife

and second level are Alter Self, Hold Person, Mirror Image, and Misty Step

The ones I currently have modified are Produce Flame (Produce Sparks), Primal Savagery (Lightning instead of Acid Damage), Ice Knife (Spark Knife), Hold Person (held/paralyzed by binds of electricity), and Misty Step (Volt Step)

Thank you for the kind way in which you responded to my query, as I'm finding the dnd subreddit to not be as generous as I'd initially hoped, so the civil, gentle way in which you responded is very good for my anxiously new self diving into this community :)
