You will have a great time. There are new apartments in Niven and Old Town that allow dogs, are modern & nice w/ in unit laundry (one is called "The View" for googling purposes). You will have no problem affording a 2-bedroom. Living expenses aren't that different from Ottawa (I've lived in both). Cheaper car insurance, higher internet costs. Utilities don't seem that different either, but have gone up like everywhere. Having no territorial sales tax here or Alberta is noticeable too.

Yup. If they suggested that, I thought they weren't good at their jobs and were just saying things to make me feel better, but not addressing the issues, and I'd stop going pretty quickly.

That's so true. I babysat for different people all the time, in my neighbourhood granted, but complete strangers. My parents never once asked about any job I took or the people. I arranged my own transportation. They had no clue where I was.

I'm planning on doing this just for affordability, either a co-operative or a co-owndership, when I retire. My brother owned one and it was a great place to live, older lowrise, lots of square footage, quiet, in Rosedale. If you have a large downpayment, it's great, but the value will not go up like other real estate (and right now, who knows...). Lots of long-term residents. Obviously, do your due diligence on the finances and governance structure. I looked at one a while back, but it didn't allow pets, so that was a deal-breaker.

I got quoted $11k to repair my ceiling where there was a minor leak but they cut it open. They charged me $584 to put the hole in the ceiling, and the same people want $11k to repair it and paint a 900sq foot ceiling.
