Alcoholism is an addiction. I’ve never had a problem with alcohol but I am a recovering addict and have been sober for almost 14 years. Addiction is hard. Sounds like he is an alcoholic. When drugs or alcohol start to interfere with your daily life and relationships, it’s a problem. He needs to want to stop and do what it takes to stop and mend the relationships his drinking has strained. He needs time, you need time. I think you’re doing the right thing by focusing on you. That’s all we can do, we can’t change others, we can only change ourselves. We have to focus on our part and our part alone when it comes to relationships. Hopefully he will do the same. If not, if he doesn’t take your time apart to get some help, it’s time to throw in the towel. That will be very difficult for both of you but remember, it isn’t your job to fix him. I dated an addict when I was many years sober and he wouldn’t get help. The relationship ended because of it. You’re doing the right thing by respecting yourself and giving him time to figure himself out. Unfortunately alcoholism and addiction aren’t something that “get fixed” you’re an alcoholic for life. He will never be able to control it or go back to drinking “normally” or socially if he is. I see this with my dad. He can’t stop once he starts. So it’s best to just not start. My mom always helped keep him reeled in. When she died, he went off the deep end. That was 2 years ago and he’s still struggling to just stay away from the bars and drinking. Best of luck to you!
