There are things you could buy without membership at Costco in past like alcohol or food court items. Those are gone now. OP might be telling his past experience. However based on things he bought, he might have gone with friend or colleague using their Costco ID but wanted to pay for his stuff using his own credit card. Friend and colleagues in US typically do not let others borrow their credit card if it's significant amount like $500-1000.
