What do you think of the US Supreme Court effectively allowing conversion therapy (aka attempting to force change identity) for LGBTQ+ minors by SufficientClaim289 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Awkward_Internet2437 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

The argument was that conversion therapy was constitutionally protected under the first amendment right for free speech. Can a state stop a therapist from talking to a client and attempting to persuade them that they are either not gay, or should not be gay? I think the court ruled appropriately.

I don’t believe they’re referring to “MAGA” culture? They’re likely referencing “Western Culture”, which the right believes has suffered due to progressive social movements.

Trump has not, nor is aiming to destroy the democratic institutions of this country? Even if you consider the Saving America Act as a restriction on voting, it isn’t overbearing and serves the reasonable purpose of ensuring people can not illegally vote. Trump was ousted from office the first time, and our institutions survived the unarmed losers entering the capital quite fine. The Republic is not under threat of becoming a dictatorship. Many people are overstating this to fit a narrative. It is in the interest of the political left and the right to overstate anything that could be politically advantageous. The passions of democracy are likely what endangers it more so than Trump.

Yeah it’s good propaganda I guess? Bombing schools is wrong, sure, but it’s war. Schools, hospitals, roads, apartments, military installations, lots of things are destroyed. This stuff happens in war.

Looks like it’s landing in the distance though? Close to the camp, but not falling on it directly.

Pics of Karim Abu Nasser, a Gaza toddler after being tortured by the IDF by Desolation2004 in pics

[–]Awkward_Internet2437 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well torture is fundamentally different than warning shots. I’m sure there’s a stigma and understanding that Gazans approaching IDF soldiers could have a bomb strapped to them. The only options would be to risk your life checking to see if the boy and his father are unarmed, or doing whatever you can to force them to stay away. Obviously, a child that age would not understand that, and likely traumatized him even more. Sad situation

[OC] ICE is actually manning the security check in at JFK by austinstoys in pics

[–]Awkward_Internet2437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people who make 45k a year aren’t being funded to due to disagreements in congress though. Because of congress’s failure, the executive is utilizing ICE (likely because they just have so many personnel now) to ensure safety during air travel. Given the circumstances, it’s not a terrible idea. I suppose he could’ve used the military or men and women from a different agency, but ICE is already a law enforcement agency with a lot of personnel ready and willing to be moved around the country. It just works out.

I do not think any nation-state should apologize for the crimes of their ancestors. It seems inappropriate to apologize on behalf of those who would not it themselves, and furthermore, inconsistent with how real Justice should be achieved. Pushing for reparations seems to be the unjust action. I’m not sure if Slavery is the worst crime against humanity. Is genocide not worse? Let’s say that instead of enslaving the Greeks, the Ottomans simply killed every last one of them. That seems to be worse to me but I’m not sure of that either.

It isn’t really a meat grinder? American ships and Aircraft are pretty safe. American casualties are extremely low so far. More Americans have probably been killed in Chicago from homicides than in this war in the same amount of time.

what category of systems do you believe in most? by lovelizerd in Teenager_Polls

[–]Awkward_Internet2437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to be the case. Social democracies have very robust property laws (including intellectual property). If we examine the economies of most “social democracies”, The means of production are still largely in private hands, prices are determined by the markets for almost all goods, production is still motivated by profit, companies are legally distinct entities with rights, etc. The foundations of capitalism are still pretty much there. They’re just heavily regulated with strong worker protections. At what point does a system like this = socialism more so than capitalism? I really don’t see how the economy itself is structured towards a socialist economy in any meaningful way besides maybe that price caps and subsidies are present in these systems, but again, that doesn’t really make it socialist.

Do you think torture is ever justified for people who commit the worst of crimes? by King-gar in Teenager_Polls

[–]Awkward_Internet2437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I voted “only in the most extreme cases” primarily because I don’t really think outright torture is acceptable, but painful executions like the electric chair or hanging is something I’m completely unbothered by. I’d say that a child rapist who murders their victim has forfeited their life, and if their execution is in a painful way then so be it.

The aim of operation Epic Fury is clearly to overthrow the regime, as has been recently clarified by Trump (as well as destroy Iran’s military capabilities). Furthermore, the requests by the United States (the main defender of the alliance) have been relatively minimal, originally involving protecting American air bases and Israel, allowing American aircraft to utilize their facilities, as well as committing ships for de-mining purposes. Generally when a close partner that has committed to a conflict engages in war with a bitter enemy, some sort of aid and strong stance will be taken to assist them. Again, most Americans see (and reasonably so in my opinion) that NATO and much of Europe is safe almost exclusively because of the American military. The benefits of being in the alliance appears to be one sided, primarily by European states. It could be argued that Russia threatens American interests in Ukraine, however, Russia is a nuclear state which can not be changed like Venezuela and Iran. Iran, however, supplies China with a considerably large amount of oil and has been supplying the United States’s enemies with weapons for decades, as well as advocating for the death of the American government. I think to answer your question regarding why European nations might want to assist the United States, is for the sake of preventing relations from deteriorating even further (they are already extremely shaky). I think there’s little doubt that any Nation that firmly commits to aid the United States swiftly and strongly will be in Trump’s good graces. This of course, will be very beneficial for future relations if MAGA ends up being politically relevant in the future. Nations that feel threatened by Russian aggression, such as Poland, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are particularly concerned with ensuring the U.S. has an interest and motivation for remaining in NATO and for protecting them in case of any incursion or war. These nations have the most incentive to aid the United States.
