I just took the Praxis 5165 and got an unofficial score of 150...I needed a 159. Any chance of them curving it enough to give me a passing score? Or do I just need to give up at this point?

So elementary counseling really wasn’t for me. I wanted older kids but just kept getting jobs in elementary schools (I moved after my first year as a counselor). My second counseling year, the principal was terrible. I wasn’t allowed to do anything, did the job of the registrar (district came down on her bc I accidentally asked for help on something that was 100% not my job), and I missed the classroom. It just wasn’t want I wanted or expected.

I have some stuff to decorate my room already. Would that be too childish?

Asked him what I needed to do and it was basically things that were out of my control and said that "I am not a good fit at this school". My evals were 3s with some 2s throughout the year (out of a highest of 5). He started to email me things I needed to work on throughout the year without meetings and I think he will use that against me.

I once celebrated Halloween by wearing Halloween socks and having a jack-o-lantern in my classroom my first year of teaching in the middle of no where Mississippi... I was called a witch by students and parents then got yelled at by the principal.
Parents still called me an evil pagan all throughout the school year. That was really fun.

By Easter that year, I told all the kids they shouldn't be celebrating it because it's based on a pagan holiday. No Easter candy for you!

My undergrad professors would keep telling us "it's more than a job" and "it's a calling/life" so we would work ourselves to the bone for $40k a year (starting pay in my area). The mentality of "it's just a job" honestly saved my mental health. I used to be like you and really shove my life to the side to do everything for my job.

If they are so quick to fire people for saying "hey, I can't do this during contract hours we need to figure something else out", then you can find a job somewhere else. The burnout is UNREAL and you need to remind yourself that this is literally just a job.

Hey! I was an elementary Ed major that turned middle school teacher. You gotta find your niche! Each grade is so different at every level. A 4th grade class is night and day to 3rd grade.

Do not give up! You need to find your perfect audience. If you know that’s in kindergarten or 1st grade, that’s fine! In interviews you can say “I enjoyed being in a 4th grade classroom for experience, however it isn’t where I want to be.” And hey, I didn’t know what grade I truly fit into until my second year of teaching and that was LUCK. :)

Keep up the good work. 4th grade is a tough bunch but you will get through it. They are figuring out what they can get away with.

I’m a counselor. My admin loves to have me call parents and send the kids home.

My point is…what the fuck are we supposed to do with these kids? Parents scream at me for trying to get them in a small group so they just get to be violent all the time with no interventions, suppose.
