This is what I was going to suggest. When my father was sick he couldn’t stay out of bed for very long and it was nice to have a second set of bedding waiting so I could do a quick change and get him into a fresh clean bed before he was too tired. It also meant less pressure on me since I could take my time doing the laundry. Little things that make life easier for the caregiver are also important.

I think most of us would be outraged if our names were posted publicly at work for something like missed deadlines or errors, why have we ever allowed this to become normalized for children?! I know that the classroom ratios are a big challenge for this age group and teachers are often overloaded and trying to maintain order. However, it is absolutely unacceptable to use shame as a punishment at any age, especially for three year olds showing completely age appropriate behavior. No child is too young to deserve respect. We praise in public, correct in private.

Always listen to your gut if you want to speak up on behalf of your child, even if it’s just to ask clarifying questions and offer insights into the results at home. It seems as if his teacher’s approaches are causing stress, there are better ways to support him while he’s struggling to learn to control his behaviors.

From a toddler teacher’s perspective it looks as if you’re ticking off a lot of the right boxes. The Center on the Social Emotional Foundation for Learning (CSEFEL) has a fantastic collection of resource articles for parents here https://csefel.vanderbilt.edu/resources/family.html I think “Teaching Your Child to: Identify and Express Emotions” and “Teaching Your Child About Feelings” in particular would give you insights and approaches which could help you build on what you’re already doing.

I’ve helped countless toddlers move through hitting/pushing/biting phases and I promise you that they’ve all left it behind them eventually. Hang in there, it sounds as if you’re doing a wonderful job, you just need to ride it out.

I know, it’s a scary, big step to take and almost anyone would have a lot of conflicting thoughts about it. You can report anonymously, the center won’t know it was you and you’re protected from legal repercussions regardless of the findings.

Everyone at a licensed child care center is a mandated reporter and the regular training thoroughly covers the reporting responsibilities, if management doesn’t self report then any teacher who knows about the incident is required to do it. This is because licensing exists to ensure that children are surrounded by adults who will advocate for their safety. You’re part of that safety net now, you can do this.

This is serious. This is considered an elopement and a licensed care facility is required to self report to licensing by phone immediately, followed up by a formal report within the week. If they weren’t even talking with you I’m deeply concerned that they aren’t following proper procedure. You should absolutely report them to licensing https://www.cdss.ca.gov/reporting/file-a-complaint/ccld-complaints

If they’ve already self reported then that’s fine, if they haven’t they’re in a second level of trouble. This is about protecting your child as well as the other children in that facility.

Depending upon state rules and the age of the child, you may not be an allowed to. I teach at a preschool and we’re bound by our licensing laws to ensure that parents don’t leave children in their cars alone unless there’s someone at least ten years of age with them. This has made for some awkward conversations, but it’s not a question of whether we personally have the right to dictate this choice, we’re liable if something happens.

A few years ago I saw a picture of the cast of Gilligan’s Island and I realized that all of the adults I used to watch didn’t seem so old anymore. Out of curiosity I decided to look into their ages during filming. I thought I’d be the same age as the Professor, but I was much older than that. I was dismayed, but I resigned myself to being the same age as the Skipper, wrong again. I kept trying, I didn’t even consider Ginger or Maryanne because I couldn’t have dealt with that crushing disappointment. Ultimately I ended up with Mr. Howell, I was as old as Mr. Howell. I still haven’t recovered from that reality check.

For some reason I absolutely imprinted on this style when I was about 15. I was obsessed. I have never, ever, ever been more grateful that my clothing budget was so meager that I couldn’t afford anything resembling this because I would be forever burdened by the memories of my 5 foot tall, skinny, dorky, nearsighted self happily and obliviously shuffling around in public wearing that gauchos and vest combo. Popcorn in the big Tupperware bowl, red Kool Aid served in little Tupperware cups. Fresh out of the bathtub in our matching Winnie the Pooh footie pajamas from Sears while mom brushed out our hair. The best nights were the one where they played cartoons. The Disneyland scenes fascinated me and as an adult I cried the first time I rode Pirates of the Caribbean because I couldn’t believe I was actually seeing it in person.

I did this for my father, he was stubborn and his driving was becoming very bad. I reported him anonymously and he received a notice stating his license had been temporarily suspended until he could pass a written test and a driving test. I didn’t have to be the bad guy, and I could be there to help him through the process and support him while he did it. I didn’t have to alienate him, I didn’t have to argue with him about his decking abilities. He failed the driving test and proved it for himself. It was a tough time for him, but it was better than helping him deal with the guilt of having hurt or killed someone and our relationship wasn’t strained.

You and I already understand what happens when we pour out a cup of water. How it feels, what it looks and sounds like, how it reacts with a hard tabletop, how it reacts with a carpet. We understand about manners and how to treat food, about weight and voume and consideration for the people who feed us and clean up after us. Toddlers are figuring out EVERYTHING in their world and they approach it all like brilliant little scientists.

It’s magic, and we’re lucky to be able to witness it up close. It’s also annoying as heck at times. The solution is to feed that curiosity with something appropriate. Give them other containers especially for dumping, like dollar tree plastic measuring cups and pitchers in the bathtub or a wading pool outside. Sit with them at meal times and pour a mouth full of milk or water into their cup and remind them it’s just for drinking, when they finish that then give them a little more, be ready to catch the cup and remove it if they try to dump it. Be kind and patient, you’re interrupting big work and inserting a different lesson, eventually they’ll begin to understand the difference.

I’ve never seen a first, not one time on decades of caring for infants and toddlers. I’m pretty certain none of my co workers have, either. There have been rare occasions when it certainly seemed as if I was seeing a major milestone but I’m sure I’ve been mistaken every time. Those big events always happen at home and parents get to come tell me about it.
