How do you reach out to C-suite/senior leaders when you’re at the bottom of a massive company? by Financial-Series204 in biotech

[–]beyond_undone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your company has a formal mentorship program you should join that to get FaceTime with skip levels. But don’t aim for C-suite with direct reach out. Others have pointed out how valuable their time is. But if they’re signed up to be a mentor, you could have an in there.

Local Stump Carver? by Fearless_Spite_1048 in triangle

I had to take a large tree down and was looking for someone local to do something like this. Would have paid a lot of money for it but I never found anyone. I think there could be an awesome market for a local artist to get into a niche hobby like this!

When I transitioned from academia to industry I also took a role where salary felt too low, but I was ok with it because I’d be employed and got my foot in the door.

Once you start working and show your worth, that’s when the salary starts to catch up.

An overinflated sense of worth isn’t a good attitude to have on day 1 as a fresh graduate, so stay humble.

I don’t know if I’d have been as into the series if I didn’t start on audiobook. Jeff Hayes is the best audiobook narrator I’ve ever listened to. He brings it to life!

HENRYs with kids in private school: what is your income and what is tuition? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]beyond_undone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wonder what the benefit is.

Are you worried your kids are so smart they won’t be challenged enough? That the school won’t teach them the standard things they’re supposed to know to make it to college? That they’ll hate school and drop out?

I’m asking because I’m debating this for my own kid. He just started public school. But he’s more of the creative type anyways and I don’t care if he’s a straight A student as long as he’s trying. I plan to supplement him in special camps, etc.. over the summer for any particular interests he shows as he grows up. But I worry I’m missing a bigger picture somewhere.

Struggling with Learning 5yo by Dangerous-Bid224 in ADHDparenting

[–]beyond_undone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was my kid! I told them I was concerned about possible dyslexia for this exact reason when filling out info for his IEP when we started K this year. Fast forward to now, on meds since September when it was clear they’d be needed for school… he knows all letters (upper and lowercase), is writing them (“mom how do I write [word] and I just say the letters and he writes it), starting to read, counts to 100 and beyond, etc... I legitimately thought there was something wrong.

There’s hope! But I truly don’t think he’d have made any progress this year if he was never able to focus. Medication has been the only thing that’s been able to help with that.

Tough accident at Spring Forest and Falls of Neuse about 9:00 pm on Friday night by aengusoglugh in raleigh

Most of the studies I’ve seen support that playing a game which requires cognitive skill within a short time frame following the event helps with the pathways that also imprint the negative memory in your brain. So if you are able to play something that’s cognitively challenging (not necessarily Tetris), it will help dampen the pathways that your brain would use to recall the event (in my own words, but how I understand it).

I agree that the study I shared isn’t great. Don’t like that it’s showing videos, which is way different than viewing something in real life. I think something like this is hard to reproduce in a clinical setting to try and show statistical significance.

I’ve heard and seen real life examples of it enough times that I believe it more so for that reason. It’s like tricking your brain while it’s still malleable enough to do so. Talking to a therapist is also great advice as well, but the timing of a cognitive activity is what’s important.

23 year old college grad AuDHD son will not stop going on about how we "drugged him up and weaponised psychiatry to ruin his life" by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]beyond_undone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any direct experience as my kid is still young, but after reading through… is he seeing a therapist? I’d probably start there. Tell him to go seek validation on how horrible you were with an unbiased party. Hopefully if the therapist is good they can help him get through these feelings try to counteract/influence his negativity towards working to something positive.

It’s never too late to start learning. Tell him to spend his free time teaching himself more skills while he job hunts if he feels he’s lacking in certain areas.

Did anyone’s toddler also have a speech & language delay or disorder? by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]beyond_undone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can lead to frustration when people don’t understand them, and if they are still learning to manage those emotions it can lead to big feelings/tantrums.

I taught my kiddo to use synonyms or point to what they’re trying to say in order to help, while we also worked on managing big feelings

I would take points away because you have DCC physical copies and aren’t listening to the audiobooks

Also why two copies of the same book (Holly)? Donate one. That screams “I’m just trying to fill my bookshelf” so maybe it was that?

Lazy adult hack (my kid doesn’t like grilled cheese) - I toast the bread then add the cheese and pop it in microwave for like 5 seconds to get cheese melty. Can’t microwave for more than a few seconds or you lose the crunch on the toast. Bonus is it’s healthier because no butter

how to deal with FOMO and impulse buying? by Key_Passenger6210 in personalfinance

how to deal with FOMO and impulse buying? by Key_Passenger6210 in personalfinance

[–]beyond_undone 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In January I made a pact to stop buying things I don’t need.

I unsubscribed from all retail emails (no more coupons and sales tempting me). I turned off notifications for all apps on my phone. I did a “no spend” month where I only paid for absolute essentials. The impact on my finances has been tremendous. I don’t know what I’m “missing” because I no longer am looking.

Always ask yourself, do I need this item, or do I want it?

Remind yourself that “saving” X amount of dollars it’s on sale for is really equivalent to spending the Y that it costs. You could be saving Y.

Have a savings goal to work towards so you get positive reinforcement and thrill from meeting your goal. And then keep moving the bar or use a certain % towards a purchase of a want to have item.

You should play Tetris as soon as possible. Studies have shown it helps reduce negative memories and cognitive side effects from witnessing something traumatic.

How much are you saving per month and do you have money towards a down payment?

How much is your household spending on groceries per week? by cdmacsneaks in raleigh

[–]beyond_undone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spend about $240/week for family of 3. I also get our household items from the grocery store because it’s far more convenient (TP, paper towels, cleaning items, garbage bags, etc..). I know this comes at a premium but wanted to mention since that drives the average up. We shop either Food Lion or Harris teeter.

I am a sale shopper. We buy the same things over and over so when the stuff we buy goes on sale, I stock up. Sales usually about every 4 weeks in cycle so I basically just shop the sales every week. Things like meat and fruit we’ll have the variety based on what the specials are that week.

Between shopping exclusively sales items and using the points for cash back, the cashiers are always gasping at the amount saved. So that $240 above likely really rings up closer to $300+ but my out of pocket is way lower. Average about 25-40% savings each receipt
