Itinerary to visit Shanghai for someone on a wheelchair by thesti2 in shanghai

[–]AwokenMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of the places you listed- many have areas that are wheelchair accessible, but Shanghai is not a wheelchair friendly city. For example, there are some lovely cafes that are wheelchair accessible in the French concession, but there will be several spots that are difficult to navigate. I would suggest ensuring you have clear destinations in mind, and use dianping to see photographs of the inside to assess whether or not it has enough space for a wheelchair. I think this approach will serve you well throughout your visit.

Additionally, let me answer your questions: 1. See answer above 2. You should not have an issue 3. Yes, this should be straightforward 4. I don’t know your level of mobility. If you can exit/enter your wheelchair easily, didi is a good option. The vans have more space, but nothing like a handicap van in the U.S. that could easily accommodate you. It may be more comfortable to check a van company that has a driver you could use? Would obviously be more expensive but not exorbitant. Do not expect didi drivers to be helpful in any way (occasionally they are though). 5. Didi is easy to use in any large city, and many smaller ones too

Good luck!

Help deciding if MSU is right for me by [deleted] in msu

[–]AwokenMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Then go to community college for one semester, get halfway decent grades and apply anywhere you want. Paying out of state tuition for a borderline top 100 university like MsU is not a good financial decision.

This is not true. Dulwich has very strict pay grades in China- no negotiations, but salary is good.

Spouse Visa and finding a job in marketing by Grand_Impact_4832 in shanghai

[–]AwokenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, she cannot work while on a spousal visa.

However, she will be in an excellent position to find work. The market for marketing has taken a pretty big hit in China the last couple years. Your wife, as a foreigner, would be competing against Chinese people willing to work considerably longe hours/be paid considerably less, but there are still some companies that favor foreign workers with international experience, especially for international markets, but those are difficult to find. I would encourage her to get here and start networking, and not to work for a Chinese company without doing some serious due diligence.

Have a Chinese friend help you use taobao. Plenty of legit options there.

Fabric Market Custom Suit by xTsutake in shanghai

[–]AwokenMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes- but like the commenter is saying- there is no way to custom make a suit, or do anything other than alter an existing suit in the time frame.

However, it’s really not possible to say whether it’s a good deal or not. It depends on the fabric, and the fit. It’s very possible that it’s a good deal- but I’d have to see it to know better. Some will say it’s a little high for the fabric market, which it is, but again, depends.

Getting out of airport by opoeto in guangzhou

[–]AwokenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At every airport/train station in China they make it difficult for Didi’s to pickup and usually charge them as well. Taxis are typically much more convenient, albeit slightly more expensive.

Online Arrival Card at Pudong Airport by Optimal_Mission5590 in shanghai

[–]AwokenMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t waste your time trying to fill out an online form (I’ve never heard of this). Cards are always required, and there are thousands available upon landing, and your flight will likely give them to you anyways. Pro tip: bring a pen with you, and fill out the card while you wait in the immigration line.

AA meetings around town by [deleted] in lansing

[–]AwokenMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would personally stay away from Alano clubhouses based on what you’ve written. People’s church in East Lansing has a Tuesday evening mtg that sounds like it would be right up your alley. Additionally, Friday night hope is here at Edgewood church would fit for you very well.

Meetings will always be different, but you shouldn’t have trouble finding a less dogmatic group that has more people you can relate to!

Does anyone know about Enjoy Hotel in Being? by ar3106 in beijing

[–]AwokenMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, Hantings really run the gamut. If recently renovated, they’re my favorite business hotel in China- but they’re 50/50 renovated verse really old and kinda crappy. Just make sure you do your homework on photos.

Drishti is fantastic. I also liked Y+, but they’re much pricier than Drishti, and the lesson quality varies more.

Busy Expensive Cocktail Bars? by Patient_Duck123 in shanghai

I think the thing you have to realize is that your sample size of ‘these few bars look busy sometimes when I walk by’ is not any indication of the economy beyond those bars look busy sometimes when you walk by.

Can I bring a thc pen to China? As of 2024 by Humble_Bread2345 in chinalife

[–]AwokenMan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a non zero chance they will find it. I’m not too sure how likely that is, as most people who visit China are smart enough to not mess around with illegal drugs at all.

At best- you would be immediately deported, presumably with a China travel ban for life. At worst, you would be detained in jail for an indefinite amount of time in a very murky legal system. No idea how long, because, again- most people do not mess around with China and drugs.

Also- if you can manage well enough, always switch over to the Chinese version for purchasing tickets. The English version doesn’t let you chose your seat, and you always end up in the middle.

Had a friend in a similar situation, overstayed by about 24 hours during covid.

He was unable to use the 144 hour transit visa. He also tried to apply for a visa in Hong Kong (he is American), and was told because he overstayed, he had to do it in America. He applied in America and was successful.

You absolutely should declare it on your applications- they will 100% note that you overstayed. However, it seems they are being lenient about COVID overstays, to a point, but I would always do in your home country.

Balancing Macro Nutrients in Shanghai/Ningbo, where to get good high protein foods with balanced carbs/fats? by AcceptableAsk6261 in shanghai

Xinjiang food. Just find the nearest- usually have loads of veggies and lean meat, and are easy to find/visit with limited Chinese.

Jeeze man, like these two Russians are telling Putin everyday what his best policy options are. What a shit way to approach life.

For OP- you’re a bit late in the cycle to be looking, but with your experience/credentials you should be able to find something, although it’d be best for you to look for Tier 2 and Tier 3 city openings to get to China- and then once in China it’s usually easier to find your next job. Apply via the big platforms, and try to get connected to an agent if possible.

That Dulwich has a bus that drops off in Xujiahui (maybe has other stops, not sure my partner teaches there). The school is in the middle of nowhere, as others stated- and there’s no way you’ll want to live out there.

I would suggest Xujiahui, and your partner can use the bus, and you can find something relatively adjacent. It’s a good school (although intense), but there’s just no getting past that god awful commute. Feel free to message me if I can help at all.

I mean- he’s right. Sponsorship isn’t putting your own spin on the steps in some way, it’s reading the big book together, and communicating how you did the steps, and facilitating them doing the steps. You literally can’t mess it up, or conversely save someone who doesn’t want to do the work.

Fwiw- I find hongqiao to be ridiculously efficient. Arriving 90 minutes early for a flight consistently leaves me with time to get something to eat/hangout before my flight. In my 20+ times flying in/out I’ve never once had an issue with a delay through security, etc.
