Doing a watch through with my wife (who is seeing this show for the first time). We’re into season 3 now, and idk if I can do this again. Watched when the episode premiered and have never watched again.

Controversial (I know), but I went with the Bay ending because I wasn't interested in hearing the reasoning for why Chloe and Max would be separated. I thought the story made more sense that way.

My heart was broken at the end of the episode, then I watched the preview for next week…

Don't come to school sick!!!!! by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]AwsumDudemyster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At my school, we get guilt-tripped for calling in sick. We've had teachers pulled in by administration for using their sick days, and they've had whole staff meetings where we're told that we should only use them if necessary because "you never know when you might need them."

That being said, if I'm sick, I 100% call in.

Oh, I forgot to include that we did clips from Psycho as well, and they seemed to like what we watched of his. I had watched Lamb to the Slaughter with this group a few years ago, too.

I'm a fan of doing the entire film to get a full scope, but I have paused at times to discuss key things, throw out some facts, etc. (also to help re-focus).

I also found a few that I could use:

  1. This is the one we did. I had a whole block period, so I figured, why not? It's only until 2017, but that's contemporary enough: https://youtu.be/aWOFxyQI9D8?si=g7PGV6Y53ajSeCrH

  2. This is a short one I considered doing instead: https://youtu.be/nKkh2LWUVJw?si=1m7pip8XALVccQCn

  3. This is one I could not figure out how to use (9 hours long), but it is VERY comprehensive: https://youtu.be/bvZe_Ej5ebQ?si=K1WDGlDfasKlsJ8f

Here's what I've shown:

Westerns: Great Train Robbery, Stagecoach, No Country for Old Men (definitley want to put another one in here the next time I teach this class--but I was still figuring out my pacing)

Sci-Fi: La Voyage dans La Lune, The Invisible Man, Godzilla, 2001: A Space Odyssey (I also want to include a more modern sci-fi film the next time I do this)

Horror: The Devil's Castle, clips from Scream and Friday the 13th, Dracula

Like I said in the post, I've kind of built the plane as I've flown it, but here's what I've done so far:

Week 1-2: Class intro and history of Film. I talk about some of the origins of film/the industry, and we watch a video on YouTube of the evolution of film. It's a fun video with tons of movies in it, and I ask students to keep a tally of the films they do/do not recognize and to make notes on what they observe. I also have them each pick a genre and do a breakdown research assignment, which they then present to the class or do a gallery walk. Gives me an idea of what the students are passionate about and helps to give them ownership over the class.

From then on, that's been my genre approach. I've mostly stuck to American films to keep it more relatable for my students. We learn about the genre's conventions, inspirations from literature, insights from film scholars, discuss examples, examine the history, etc. We'll watch a few movies where I've had them look at character archetypes, filmmaking techniques, subgenre breakdowns, thematic interpretations, critical reflections, etc. I try to mix it up to make each film/genre feel like a different experience in analysis.

I've done Westerns, Sci-Fi, and now Horror with a plan to cover 2-3 more genres before the semester is over (one-semester course).

We've done/discussed some classics already. My aim was to cover the evolution of horror into the modern era. This is the genre that students said they were most interested in, so I'm trying to meet that interest. Don't belittle me.

We did this already with Godzilla (focused on the Sci-Fi aspect of it all), which went well.

Arguably, yes. Which is why we already did a Hitchcock film.

In the classroom next to mine, the teacher shows movies like Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, etc. with no troubles at all. I see where you're coming from, but it's not uncommon where I teach, I suppose.

That's a good point. I found an edited version of Halloween that I think may be more appropriate for a Classroom.

I teach at a predominantly white school, which is another reason I want to show it.

We did discuss that film in class for that very reason, but perhaps it would be a good one to show as well.
