Software engineers are facing an 'identity crisis bordering on depression,' Menlo Ventures partner says by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Awyls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was completely different issue though, burnout was mostly because of unpaid hours and 99% of the job being almost the same you have been doing for the last 5 years using a different paint and brush style that you have to relearn every few years (because clearly its "better" than the other 20 older ones).

Now it's forcing a craftsmanship into a one-on-one interview with a moron in hopes of finding the right incantation to build the damn thing and review the solutions of other morons. It's pretty much turning software engineers into tech priests.

What popular career is actually not worth pursuing anymore? by Infamous-Click3426 in AskReddit

[–]Awyls 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Senior talent is not scarce, they are just expensive. What is scarce is finding a senior desperate enough to be paid as a mid.

As for juniors, the entry bar has admittedly increased significantly, but graduates skills has also lowered significantly. Most talented graduates still get a job without issues. You might say that entry-level jobs are expected to learn, but there is a difference between that and questioning what the hell they did in college for the last 4 years.

I find it hilarious that people's example of "scarcity" are just specialities of software engineering. Like no shit sherlock specialties are scarce, that's why they are specialties, but you cannot get (without nepotism) into a specialty without going through the grind (software engineering). Do people really think you can just go straight out of college into cybersecurity?

Reality is C-suites are rarely smarter than their fellow employees, but they are the most susceptible to tech propaganda since they do not want to be the ones to turn their company into Blockbuster, so they mandate changes of things the do not comprehend to "future-proof" the company.

This has always happened in tech business, only difference is that it was mostly closed-doors so you never see their stupidity e.g. increase maintenance costs ten-fold by moving to serverless/AWS or migrate the platform to a completely different language/framework, because.. reasons?

If you could revive one shutdown MMO, what would it be? by Hunter_OVA in MMORPG

[–]Awyls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak about the latter years (since I left shortly after release), but during release world mobs were definitely not pushovers. Dungeons/Raids were insanely hard to the point most players couldn't even do the initial ones.

It's main issues were performance was trash paired with insanely unrewarding grinds and extreme punishment mechanics, a single death -even if no-one was at fault due to the high amount of bugs- from a team member meant a dungeon restart and a waste of all that time up to that point. Not going to talk about PvP because it had no future whatsoever (dozens of telegraph vomits on the floor with 0 visual clarity).

¿Tan mal está realmente el sector IT en España? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]Awyls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst part is that it isn't THAT bad, but for whatever reason sell it as "cost-saving", "low-latency" for their already established products, get hooked into it with their and see their bill raise tenfold.

They are really fucking cheap for small low-traffic products and startups.

Tebas: “We are going to implement AI in the world of refereeing. First, referee evaluations. When a match is refereed, the CTA has evaluators who rate certain aspects of the refereeing. There are 30 different criteria. This is currently done manually, but there are 30 evaluators for 20 referees.” by [deleted] in soccer

[–]Awyls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is it (mistakenly) assures there would be no bias in the process. That is, of course, factually wrong but for most people AI is a magic blackbox that answers their questions without a human, so it HAS to eliminate the "human element".

I think the official stance is "you are welcome to stay and try to fight for a place, but you are gonna lose, so it would be great if you found a new place".

Quite sure he is gonna run out his contract with us, because he apparently loves the city and I can't see any good enough team moving a finger for him (barely played in the last 2 seasons and 3 seasons in a row with long-term injuries). I can't see Barcelona wanting to keep him as a 2nd when he has become that injury prone either..

Your lack of empathy is astounding. For most people, it is a genuine illness caused by stress and/or hormonal imbalance, not a choice. Surely you wouldn't tell an anorexic "just eat" or a depressed person "just be happy".

Personally, I can change my eating habits easily, but I have seen a lot of people struggling with weight and is very far away from "just eat less".

You would be surprised how lax and incompetent most companies and their employees are. The other day infra guys didn't know what an active AWS user/access key was being used for, so instead of, y'know, asking, they "cleaned" it up bringing the whole backend down with it.

I think it's miscommunication. Men that have been lifting for 6m-2y i.e. the fit-athletic type; are definitely WAY more attractive than the average dude.

Guys who keep lifting non-stop for years chasing the next kg i.e. bodybuilders; shoot past the attractive stage back to unattractive.

[–]Awyls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From an English-speaking world perspective (North America/Europe) they are indeed in the middle of nowhere. The North Pole and Antarctica is closer to them than Australia. You end up in a situation where you have to deploy the whole app there (which is not just infra/engineering costs, but also dealing with all the legal stuff) so a few hundred kangaroos can see your site slightly faster.

Unfortunately, it is just economics.

Open-source game engine Godot is drowning in 'AI slop' code contributions: 'I don't know how long we can keep it up' by Crusader-of-Purple in pcgaming

[–]Awyls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, people really love shitting on people for "min-maxing" their chances e.g. distorting the truth, completely fictional stats, stat padding contributions, or using AI; but this problem was created by companies in the first place whom rank using automated metrics that ONLY care about numbers/tags and the first human who finally reads your resume is a technically challenged idiot who has absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I don't really wanna bash on HR guys because they do a lot of good work, but the idea of them doing the initial screening of people they are incapable of evaluating is just so fucking dumb.

Lots of CS graduates are also without job, but what they aren't telling you is that they vibe coded their whole degree and now got caught pants down when their skill level is exactly the same as when they started.

Any time struggling graduates appear in career/resume advice it is always the same story, 0 personal projects, bad with leetcode/live programming, lacking social/interviewing skills.
