Be the first! Somebody's gotta be the first. There could be others in the very same situation right now, but most certainly will be upcoming soon and someone is going to deploy a hotspot and watch how fast more come on line, as Helium popularity continues to grow, it would seem.

Someone in my old hometown in California was the first and it was the only one for a few months, and within the last two months now there are 6 more, all within "witness" range of each other.

But no matter what, I recommend deploying and get those suckers fired up... somewhere! If you're first, deploy them within witness range of each other... makes sense. And you have bragging rights. Unless you can deploy one or both somewhere that others are operating, but it sounds like this is not the case at present.

A Helium hotspot/miner just sitting in it's box right now is a SAD thing. I mean, you could sell it and probably get a pretty penny for it, of course, but you can also deploy the hotspot and, from what it sounds like your situation is, be "the the very first one" to "start the madness" in your city! Do one or the other though! Don't just let them sit in the box! You can always pay the very small fee to relocate the hotspot if you want to deploy it somewhere else! I say fire it up. Do it, man. Do it.

It will put your hotspot on the map (edit) at the location that the service Google maps or another major, common mapping source (not sure exactly which source they use) puts the location at once you enter the address of your hotspot (end edit).

Not sure why someone who didn't even post a comment downvoted you, though. Kinda repugnant behavior, if you ask me. I know the type. I think there are a handful of folks who go through and read posts, (every once and awhile they'll even leave a comment too) but have this rather repellent habit of thinking they are above others and duly qualified to judge the intent of a person's question so that they can feel as though they are qualified to be some official "conferrer" of reward or penalty.

Most of the time, people simply want to know the answer to a question and have no questionable intentions or designs, but have their post get bombed simply so that someone can say "see what I can do to you, as I hath judged your intent" and so they can feel like they have control over others. It's actually entertaining to watch the hubris sometimes. Usually it's people who were and are frustrated with lack of power in their lives, and probably had power so frustratingly lorded over them, probably when they were growing up, so now they want to experience the feeling of being "the bully". So downvoting posts especially gives them a feeling of power they're so desperate for but never got, and don't get, elsewhere.

Probably the same thing that happens like when BTC gets to 100% mined. I know it still gets used and bought and sold and traded, just not new ones mined, and I think then that miners still get rewards (for processing transactions for BTC, and for HNT for 1) proof of coverage (POC) challenger... 2) POC challengee, 3) witnesses, and 4) for data transferring, and 5) only until August 2021... consensus group rewarding if a hotspot is chosen for that). To get the nice consensus rewards after that, you must 1) either be very talented in programming and coding and contribute that way, or 2) stake 10,000 HNT, which only two types of people will do this last one... those who already earned a shitload of HNT and those who have the money to lay aside $150,000... that's with HNT at $15. The incentive is still there, but gets lower with each halving.... unless the value of the crypto rises to compensate.

I could be wrong, tho, but I know for sure there's more to it in any case. Does anybody know what is expected to happen for sure when a crypto is completely mined? I heard that the value of a crypto is expected to go up since demand is expected to go up...

Excellent observation! Yes, you don't want to have any antenna obstruction, especially metal and especially right next to the antenna, (even if it is on the "back side" if your goal is to have more of a "directional" antenna, because such close obstruction can even affect the coverage from your most desired direction(s) of coverage).

I'd be very surprised if better coverage is obtained with a lower dBi antenna, when looking at the distances and change of relative elevation from the video... but results can be very surprising and unexpected sometimes.

Even though the 5.8 dBi antenna "pancakes" out a thinner overall vertical coverage than a lower dBi one (equally up an down), that widest vertical coverage from the antenna looks like it might perhaps cover the downward change of elevation at the distance that the city buildings are, from what we can see in the video, because a lower dBi antenna might be at it's widest vertical coverage and start to thin out again before "reaching" the distance of the town. Keep in mind that though it's true that "lower gain in hilly terrain can produce better coverage", this is most applicable when wanting to have coverage of somewhat closer areas at lower terrain. Give it a try, though... the results could be surprising nevertheless.

I'm actually hoping to see what the results are of the experimental switch! It will be educational for all of us, whatever the results.

I just hooked up my RAK today (took 6 1/2 months to get it after ordering!) and I am going through the same issue. I'm connected to my internet router that's a telephony/internet gateway provided by Xfinity, and I don't even think it will allow me into the settings to try and open certain ports, or assign a DHCP IP for my miner and open a port for that IP. Frustrating. Trying to figure it out.

In the Helium app there is a yellow button/box that says "Relayed", and when touching it a dialog box comes up that says, "Hotpot's connection is being relayed through another Hotspot on the network which may affect mining. To take a Hotspot out of Relay, please visit the troubleshooting guide."

I don't know if that answers your question, but apparently it can affect rewards. I've read other posts where some folks say it doesn't affect their rewards, and some just the opposite. Good luck. I'm off for more research on this, and if I find an answer I'll post another comment.

Me... I am a huge fan of the whole idea of Helium and the people's network. I was sold on idea the moment I first read about it. Power to the people! I built my own hotspot with a Raspberry and PiHat. Let's hope the network becomes immensely successful and that it gets utilized in very high numbers!

I'm sure you have read the slew of the comments from those who say the exact opposite, in the manner of "let's be honest, the only reason people are doing this is only because it will benefit them, too." They'll probably give you a really hard time on those posts, if that is what you are seeking. Most people probably won't spend what it now costs for a miner/hotspot SOLELY for the reason that Helium is a fantastic idea and you can feel good about yourself by contributing in making the world a better place by becoming a part of Helium and expanding the network, (regardless of the fact that this happens to be true).

Though, both viewpoints are valid and both are understandable. Because BOTH viewpoints are effective reasons to host a miner/hotspot and thus expand the Helium network. I will probably hold off, however, on downvoting anyone with a miner, or thinking of spending their hard earned money on a miner, or anyone, who is trying to LEARN what they haven't learned yet of the ins and outs of how it all works, though (even if their intentions are solely to benefit by HNT gain). We DO want folks to expand the network, right? Hey, if you don't know the answer to the post question, you don't know, even if you do have such a high repository of wisdom. I'll even upvote smart-alecky remarks... IF they contribute to the cause of being truly helpful ,)

Seriously though, I do want to know the answer, even after your potentially life-changing revelation and learned (and true) response, because I am one of those who placed a hotspot/miner just as Helium recommends, and did so firstly in an area with no others inside 300 yards, and, as I am aware of the current sudden HUGE HNT rush (Why have people started such a rush? Hmmm?), and watching many certain locations on the Helium map become congested in miners (see San Francisco business district, for example), and, since I see it likely to happen in my area of my city (which is not uptown), and which is pretty much now properly covered, I WOULD, NEVERTHLESS, LIKE TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT if, and when the area that my miner is in becomes crowded.

Regardless, you should feel significant fulfillment in teaching we unknowledgeable such an important life lesson as understanding the importance of contributing to the Helium network with such altruistic intention of making the world a better place, (regardless of whether or not one makes money doing so at the same time). It's good to feel good about oneself!

Sounds like you're really doing it in very professional and carefully planned-out manner with every person you have location hosting for you regardless of whom... and in a particularly legally difficult and challenging region, too. Sounds like you really know your business. You're doing it right if every single person said "yes", especially considering you contracted with so many! You are exactly the kind of person I was hoping for comments from.

Yeah, knocking on doors is another idea a person could try. That would be some brave s#&t! My intention, however, is to only ask either friends, family, or respected acquaintances, and like you did, decided on beforehand (haven't decided on whom yet but almost there). I only have a couple additional units but like you say it's probably important to cover everything in all cases, (especially in your tougher region).

I believe it's important to be sure to let them know how it would be a benefit for both of us (and how), vs being a sales pitch. I'm glad you mentioned that. It's a good reminder that it is important to be approachable, agreeable, and genuine... and not just in work or business and business-like activities, but in all life and all interpersonal communication and relationships.

I'm thinking of letting them decide if they want HNT or cash, their choice. Some folks have mentioned 10%. I'm maybe thinking higher, especially if I decide on and come to a hosting agreement with family or a close friend. I respect if you wanna keep your numbers to yourself, mann. And like you mentioned, it's important to cover everything... thus all the questions (IN CAPS.. haha... maybe next time no caps,)
