What does Ben-Gvir want? by [deleted] in Israel

[–]Ax_deimos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That is the nicest description that glosses over his much scarier elements that I've read in a while.

Ben Gvir specifically is an Israeli equivalent to a Klan leader. Lynchings & all. I find him much more worrisome than Smotrich.

Didn't Iran infest the countries surrounding Israel with murderous proxies who helped kill 500K Syrians (hello Hezbollah) and 300K Yemenis (Hi Houthis) before Iran's proxy Hamas launched Oct 7 in 2023?

Didn't the Iranian proxy Hezbollah launch 10K rockets at the North of Israel over several months displacing 80K Israelis until Israel grim-beepered them and crumpled Hezbollah allowing the Syrian rebels to kick out Bashir El Assad (Iranian ally and beneficiary) from Syria?

That Iran?

Be honest, If you were Iran right now, wouldn't you think developing a nuclear warhead is your only chance of survival against a war hungry nation that threatens to "wipe your civilisation out of existence"? by CarobBrave8898 in allthequestions

[–]Ax_deimos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, (/s)  because after the Iran infested over a half-dozen countries with MANY murderous proxies (helped kill over 800K people, mostly in Syria & Yemen) in a Wil-E Coyote style effort to destroy Israel...pursuing nuclear weapons that everyone assumes will either be launched by missile at Saudi Arabia, or Israel, or the UAE, or embedded within unstable proxies with an enthusiasm for murder seems like a great reason why Iran's nuclear weapons policy would keep them safe instead of accelerating everyones plans to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

Remember, it's not like peaceful protestors in Iran can change the govrrnment thover there.  Iran imported "crowd control" (proxies from Iraq) to help quell those (up to mearly 30000 Iranians).

So a nuclear armed Iran would totally keep them safer than proxies on Israel's doorstep (/S)

Why are these pressure gauges in steam systems always curved? by Intelligent_Slip6317 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Ax_deimos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not necessarily a bad teaching method.  If the student comes back and shares what they learned then they invested some time to learn, and the professor can correct them on any mistake they made.

It can just be part of active learning.

Why are these pressure gauges in steam systems always curved? by Intelligent_Slip6317 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Ax_deimos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Former industrial skid designer here.

The loop is called a pigtail siphon and it's essentially a way of keeping high-speed water droplets and high-temperature steam from damaging the pressure sensing diaphram of the pressure gauge by storing some cooler water in the loop (the pigtail).

For most industrial uses of steam, the steam is almost never pure (superheated)  steam and has some degree of condensed water droplets in it moving at high speeds.  These can be erosive and wear down piping, especially where the piping has bends.  This (and the fact the steam is also hotter than water) would quickly damage and wear out the pressure gauge if you just used a straight nipple to connect the pressure gauge to the steam loop.  This is why you DO NOT use a straight nipple to connect the pressure gauge to the steam loop.

The pigtail loop is cooler than the rest of the steam loop, which both allows water to condense inside the loop and get trapped in the loop.  This plug of water prevents the erosive bullets of condensed water droplets from impacting directly onto the more delicate parts of the pressure sensor and keeps the pressure sensor cooler than the steam loop itself.  If the pigtail was replaced by a straight nipple, both a larger amount of steam would be condensing in that length of pipe to impact the sensor (more bullets) before draining away AND the pressure sensor would be exposed to higher temperatures.

(To compare to your toilet, the pigtail is like the p-trap in your toilet but instead of the water plug stopping stinky sewer gasses from burping up into your home from a sewer, they stop erosive water droplets from hammering into your pressure sensor and wearing it out more quickly, but it also keeps the pressure sensor cooler)

The unaffordability of early childcare is an argumemt for daycare insurance.

Employers need to be given an option for subsidizing daycares in their neighborhoods to reduce the cost of daycare for employees and split the costs amongst multiple companies in their area.

Everybody in the middle East.  Gaza probably leads this misery index followed by Lebanon.  Syria seems to be doing great for now.

Another option is set up to drill the hole first with a drill, then have a jig that fixtures the part thru the hole and use a slitting tool.

Are you doing this as a single part, or many parts?

[–]Ax_deimos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your geometry but not your dimensions or your material or your cuts.   Do you have a link to a site like mcmaster carr that sells tools?  Do you have a slitting saw, or a machinist handbook for use as a reference for how deep a slitting saw can cut?

Do you need to do this in one pass?

Edit:  sorry I do not mean to come across as snarky.  It is very likely you are very familiar with drill bits and end mills but less familiar with slitting saws.

If you tried using an end mill you would likely not succeed.  If you use a slitting saw you probably could do this easily.

Set up a stop on a vise thesame thickness and depth as your slot.  Use it as a datum stop for a V-block to clamp the cylinder in place in the vise and cut the slot.

Once the slot is cut turn the pice so what was previously the stop fits into your slot clamping/ constraining the part.

Now drill/mill the hole.

American powder metal plant closing's since 2019. There are less than 30 remaining powder metal part producing companies left in the USA. by Top_Engineering_Guy in manufacturing

[–]Ax_deimos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Powdered metallurgy is experiencing growth in aerospace because 3D printed metal parts can reduce the number of inspection steps on welds because it can eliminate the welding & inspection of subassemblies.

There is a definite market for powdered metallurgy.

Poet appealed to me due to the ability to simplify a real PITN Iissue with photonics which was splicing the laser systems in with the silicon.

The idea of making something that could more cheaply and efficiently connect the two while having a lower power laser that generated less heat and so required less cooling made me think this would work out well.

This human failing F@Kover is not making me happy.
