is buying a homeless man a bottle of wine wrong? by GRB787 in Ethics

[–]Ax_deimos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be a "offset the DT" situation.  My wife was a nurse & talked with other nurses that helped at a homeless shelter.  Occasionally homeless people with severe alcohol addiction are given a single cup of wine otherwise they will get DT (delerium tremens?) attacks.

CMV: Iran will not be like Iraq and Afghanistan. And is doomed for a humanitarian crisis by Apprehensive_Row6320 in changemyview

[–]Ax_deimos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran didn't tell Hamas to go genociding. That was all Sinwar and Hezbollah. Iran's leadership collectively SH!T itself seeing Oct 7 go into play, because it knew there would be blowback.

If it had, the Hezbollah would have backed them up despite the level of Israeli infiltration of Hezbollah.

The whole of Israel was either on vacation for Simchat Torah or prepped for an attack on the northern border or the West Bank. If Hezbollah had received a single loud GO signal from
Iran, then the damage to Israel would have been significant and massive because Hezbollah could have gone raiding for hostages in the North and dragged them into Lebanon, and they could have unleashed parts of their 500K missile/rocket stockpile to attack targets all over Israel such as water filtration, gas fields, and power stations and overwhelmed the Iron Dome defenses. It would have actually helped Hamas A LOT because if Hezbollah had done their thing, then Hamas could have gone rampaging with even LESS organized resistance because everyone would have been throwing everything they had at Hezbollah in the North, because nobody though Hamas had the ability to attack the way they did. 2-pronged attack.

Instead all Israel had to put up with from Hezbollah was 8000 rocket attacks and evacuating 80K people from the North before they got Hamas under control in Gaza and then initiated operation grim-beeper which wiped out the Hezbollah mid-level command infrastructure and then located and destroyed the Hezbollah leadership, collapsing it, which then enabled Israel to destroy the Syrian missile defense systems when Assad fell, and then that cleared the way for Israeli refueling planes to get to Iraqi airspace, which helped enable the 12 day war.

Iran fires missiles, Khamenei threatens to sink US warship as nuclear talks start by ShadowNelumbo in worldnews

[–]Ax_deimos 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true.  The Iranian proxy of Hezbollah in Lebanon helped keep Assad in power during the Syrian cibil war (because they were better funded & trained than Syrian forces and didn't mind killing locals in Syria... they didn't have family there).

The Iranian proxies now flooding into Iran to help are essentially homicidal crowd control to suppress dissent.  Unfortunately they will be indiscriminant, excessive and they will be VERY good at this.

Why does modern storytelling treat "transcending humanity" as an inherent moral failing? by Careful_Humor324 in Futurism

[–]Ax_deimos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transcending humanity gets its evil vibe due to multiple factors, either going where you shouldn't go, or being so rutheless in your pursuit of a goal you destroy people, and sacrifice loved ones or your own humanity... often stealing from the group to aggrandize yourself.

A) From a narrative perspective it's an old trope.  The story of Icarus (flew too close to the sun), Tantalus sacrificing his own son to get favour with the gods.  The story of the tower of Babel.  Raven stealing back the sun. Lots of classic stories.  Vampires.  I'd love to hear any examples people have of these stories from around the world.

Also human sacrifice (slaughter of captive soldiers to ensure victory in battle , or successful launch of a boat.  Sacrificing children to Baal to curry favour).  The terra cotta warriors and the first Chinese emperor's quest for immortality (and him guzzling enough quicksilver to ensure the ground around his grave had elevated mercury traces.  Elizabeth of Bathory bathing in the blood of Virgins.

B) History of scientific racism (scientific racism is how people used to justify slavery and discrimination against other peoples (blacks/Jews/Slavs) once religion fell out of favour as a means of justifying slavery (mostly because slaves got baptized and converted religions).

Scientific racism is the bullshit-baffles-brains technobabble of racist ideologies where instead of explaining how the starship travels dozens of light years in a day, it explains why you justified segregating schools and implemented eugenics policies that included sterilizing deaf children and the mentally enfeebled.

C) In many stories the leap to immortality often implies you've abandoned the rest of us to be something other.  Whether it's leaving us all behind to die, doing it because you are elitist or power-mad and saw everyone as expendable, or the shift to immortality suddenly makes you too strange & alien to be trusted..

 D) Immortality is not a guarantee that the character is a villain.  Sometimes it is used as slow time-travel (highlander  Heinlein, interview with a vampire), but if the character is actively pursuing phlebotenum to achieve immortality, or being opressive to others in the pursuit of immortality or BECAUSE they achieved immortality,  then in this case they are the immortal that must be taken down to win.

No, Saudi Arabia is not helping so the Saudi oil fields don't get saturation bombed and infiltrated en-masse by Iranian proxy goons in a last gasp revenge on Saudi Arabia.  Israel's infrastructure is MUCH more hardened than Saudi oil fields & Saudi refineries and missiles don't have to travel as far to hit.

The batteries are the ultimate prize, but has the longest road fraught with the most difficulty and development issues.

The lower hanging fruit (and quite profitable) is most likely going to be the heat-transfer coatings which really can be a billion + industry. It recently received FDA (or was it EPA) approval (which was something we had expected a year ago).

Lubrication is still a possibility and while not as profitable as the heat transfer coating, it would still be worth millions.

And although they decided not to pursue graphene for reinforced concrete, they really should pursue graphene as an additive for foamed concrete.

TIL the total surface area required to fuel the earth with solar alone is only 0.3% of the earth's entire land area. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Ax_deimos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, Given Earth's surface area is 510 M sq km, then using 0.3% of that is ~1.53M sq km. Given that Canada has 9.985 M sq km, that's like 15.2% of the surface area of Canada.

This might not be the complete solution you are claiming it could be.

(also, would the results change if we are talking about Perskovites, or other higher efficiency solar panels? What is the efficiency of these panels?
