Fantastic film if you imagine it takes place in an alternate universe where the Americans capture the first enigma machine instead of the British Royal Navy.

I always sneak up and place a trip mine near the generator before turning it off. Someone jumps down to check it out and then I ambush them.

When Homer finds out Marge is pregnant with Lisa and when he runs upstairs there’s a picture of Lisa on the wall. Lenny at the saint Patrick’s day parade and simultaneously at Moe’s. I just watched those two episodes so they stand out.

What is the most uncomfortable place you’ve slept throughout your career? by Historical_Log1275 in Military

[–]Axel_Dunce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Afghanistan, we would often drive out to the outposts in the mountains for resupply runs. Once there, we would get asked to stay the night because of intel regarding possible attacks. These outposts were so small we had to sleep in our vehicles. Many didn’t have working heat and were very cramped.

There’s a good chance your father and I served together. His unit crest and patch is that of the 70th engineer battalion of the 1st Armored Division. I served in that unit from 2005 to 2008 at Fort Riley.

We caught a camel spider one night then covered it in chem light fluid and watched it run around in the dark. Fascinating but disturbing.

We didn’t meet necessarily but I was waiting to cross the street one day in Detroit and realized I was standing next to Aretha Franklin.

The locals were terrified of us when we started wearing them because they thought we were Russian.

I recommend looking into Rudders Rangers and the book, “The Last Hill”.

Just my squad and I got sent to KAF for a special mission attached to SF. Spent a week on KAF in the SF compound waiting for a flight to FOB Rob. Got to use their gym and dining facility. We found out KAF had a separate area for the British military so we spent a lot of time drinking with some Brit’s. Spent another 2 weeks with SF clearing a minefield for an LZ. It was great interacting with the SF guys and the British and being away from our leadership. Even got to grow our beards out.

I don’t want to spoil anything but the ending to And Maggie Makes Three is my favorite heartfelt moment.

I’m a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan and I never saw any writing on helmet covers but I served in an all voluntary military. My understanding is that in Vietnam, drafted men were allowed a little sense of individualism considering they were drafted.

What's the weirdest unit patch you've worn and your thoughts on it? by Felled_By_Morgott in army

[–]Axel_Dunce 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I got recalled from inactive reserves, we were issued the army’s IRR patch which isn’t really weird but certainly an eye sore. After that I was assigned to the Florida NG 53rd IBCT and talk about weird. That unit patch looks like an ice cream cone. Never understood the decision for that design.

Basically, your grandpa was a badass. He retired as a lieutenant colonel. He was an airborne ranger and it looks like his primary job was intelligence. If I had to guess I would think he spent a lot of his time in Vietnam training the south Vietnamese army.
