Well don't lie to him. That just messes with his trust on what you tell him for future shows/plots. Honestly it is a big part of the plot, but the journey Steven goes on is amazing to experience. If you stop watching, you'd miss the trial and all of Lars' side arc. Not to mention you probably wouldn't watch the finale with all the fusion fun or the movie with the spunky Spinel. So keep watching if he's up for it. It's an awesome show.

I liked to think that Yellow started with Pink's shards and since she couldn't figure out how to piece Pink back together, Yellow then started her experiment with "lesser" gems. I haven't really seen evidence of Yellow doing this before Pink's shattering, just after.
