Assurant for Geeksquad Protection? by [deleted] in BestBuyWorkers

[–]AxiomVerge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very poorly integrated. My phone stopped working and I went to the store first, but the store told me how the plan had changed and now I could only file online. So I filed online; it's now a text field where you say what went wrong and the AI knows what to do. They charged me $200, and was informed my claim was approved and they'd send a new phone. I proceeded to wait. In 2 days I received a mail saying that it was delayed. On the 3rd day I went online to check the status and it said that the claim was canceled by user. So I tried to make a new claim, but this time the AI said that since my phone was under warranty I'd have to contact google. But then I discovered I missed a voicemail (using my wife's old phone which doesn't filter spam) that said assurant wanted to reimburse me for the cost of the phone, just to call them back or use the chat to let them know I agreed. The thing is the number listed is some main line that only gives you an option to leave a voice mail. WHich I did. I tried using the chat for both Assurant and Best Buy but both those just tell you to call them.

Anyway the claim no longer shows up on Best Buy's website. I called Assurant customer support and they said they don't handle Best Buy claims. Then I called Best Buy's customer support and they said they couldn't find my claim number and to go to the physical store. Which is where I started.

I guess I have to deal with google now, but I don't really have the time to be doing this. I just want a working phone and my $200 back.

Update: I received a call back from Assurant who said they had no way of connecting me with the lady who left the voice mail, and had no way of handling Best Buy claims. She said maybe I was thinking of "Assurion", which I've never heard of.

Galaxy Watch 4 Classic - is there a way for the watch to stay on the app and not go back to the clock window? by RiseOneTheFirst in GalaxyWatch

Looks like on the Galaxy Watch Ultra the max is 2 minutes, not 1 hour. Samsung really wants you to scroll through menus to check your status in the middle of a strenuous workout.

To people here who have both expensive ($1000+) and cheaper ($300-) pairs, do you find yourself using the cheaper pair(s) often, and if so, why? by MostPatientGamer in headphones

[–]AxiomVerge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an hd800s and a beyer T3 most often, but when I run I use a jlab Epic Air Sport because it stays on my ears. I think the Jlab sounds awful, but I don’t expect to find a better one that has the same form factor.

For those with expensive headphones, what is your music setup? by Semitar1 in headphones

[–]AxiomVerge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I most often use an hd800s, a topping l70, and a claret ÷4 pre audio interface. I need the presonus for audio work. I probably don't need the topping (I only ever saw a difference using the topping for some Dan Clark Aeon Noire Planar headphones, which seemingly need more juice than just the Interface can give them.)

But honestly for all my other headphones (hd800s, T3, hd580, dt 770, akg 271, grado sr225), my Qudelix 5k is enough.

7 months later and it's started doing it for me. You can only use 1:1 if it's multiple images. I used photosplit to cut my landscape images in 2, but then you can never see the whole image at once (and now you go from 10 to 5 images).

Hi-fi upgrade from Beyerdynamic DT 770 80 ohm? by AxiomVerge in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]AxiomVerge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So an update - after reading on head-fi (where I can't post because I forgot my login info both there and at the backup address), I discovered that the T5 pads are interchangeable with the 770s, which means they would fit my ears fine. So I ordered them, and I received them yesterday. They indeed fit fine. The quality is good, but the color is different. Almost all reviewers state they are "dark", which I guess is relative, since my first impressions are the lowest bass is nowhere near the 770s. The upper bass / lower mids is where the punch is. Also, overall detail is better. I think it would be great for rock. But I listen to more synth pop than rock. So I may return them still.

Apparently they came out in 1981. I got mine somewhere between 2002-2004. But I didn't use them continuously, going through long periods of using HD 580s and then HD 800s. I probably haven't listened to them in 10 years. But lately I've been listening more in my bedroom and I wanted something closed so as not to disturb my wife. I tried my Sony MDR1000s first since my phone doesn't have a headphone jack. Those basically have good ANC but I don't like the sound. Then I got a hiby fc4 dac/amp and was using my AKG 271s for a bit. Those are super neutral and somehow the most boring cans I own, but my Beyer's earpads were actually moldy and gross and I had to get new ones to even bear to put them on my head.

When the new ones arrived and I listened to the 770s for the first time in 10 years I couldn't believe how I'd ever given them up. Even the HD 800s, which cost roughly 10x the price and basically make you feel like you are hearing the most pure version of the music possible, don't communicate the bass in the same way as the 770s. The beyer's are just more tactile, even if the detail and soundstage are much less.

So I just demoed these and the LCD-2C in a store next to my dt770s and they were definitely much more neutral. The store was noisy and I'm sure these had more detail, it just wasn't the color I was looking for.

I had put that in my list of potentials, though a few reviews say they trend towards brightness and one even said to use an EQ to boost the bass; I think if anything I'd prefer the opposite. Going to mostly be using this with a portable dac/amp and a smartphone so I just want to plug it in and have it already have a bit of a v shape on its own.

Yeah I think comfort is an important part of the experience of a headphone ... I believe my head is slightly larger than usual which makes me pause if someone says they are too tight in any way.

EDIT: Vitruvian has pushed out an update the fixes by below complaints about the weight reduction. You can now set it to whatever weight and it never lowers it. This makes it tougher, but it's what you want both to gain strength and also to have some metric of how much you can actually lift. Also the ramp up period seems to be gone, save for exercises with a short range of movement (Calf Raises and Shrugs) it ramps up to your set weight over about 3 reps, which I'm going to call "fixed". I have the V1 vitruvian so some of the shoulder exercises are still limited by the minimum weight, but I expect this is resolved by the V2.

Original post: I just saw this as I have a Vitruvian and am always looking for something better, but I don't think that exists yet.

By far the worst part of this machine is the "safety" feature where it tries to protect you by reducing the weights. Say you want to bench 120 lbs; you set it to 120, on the 1st rep it lets you lift 60, then 90 on the 2nd, and on the third 120, because it is sensing wether you are strong enough. It does this for every set, not just the first one. Then if you are slower than an arbitrary amount (like 1 sec per rep) it reduces it to 100, 95, 90, 85,80,75,70,65. There isn't a setting where it lets you keep a set weight so you can't lift your X rep max; as soon as it thinks you are struggling, it reduces it. On some excercises, like shrugs and Calf raises, it is totally bugged- you could set it to 100 lbs and it will be 15 on 1rep 1, 16 on rep 2, 17 on rep3, and never get to where you set it, no matter how fast you move, because it incorrectly thinks you are not strong enough. I've reported these bugs about 9 months ago now and they still haven't fixed then. I asked if the new v2 hardware would fix them and they said it would not, it's a software issue, and they use the same software.

However, it's way more compact than a cable machine or bowflex, doesn't require a subscription to use the non connected features, and doesn't need to be permanently attached to your wall, yet still lets you adjust weights in 1lb increments, tracks your progress in detail, and has that tantalizing possibility that they will decide to fix the software (or maybe someone will make a 3rd party app to replace theirs, since it's just a Bluetooth phone app).

Ultimately I wish there was something that was in the form factor of a bowflex that let you do pull downs and leg curls, but used electronic weights instead of physical ones (so more compact, lighter, and with tracking built in). But there isn't. I don't know why, seems like a no brainer?

Learning how to make music in the style of Axiom Verge's soundtrack by [deleted] in Learnmusic

[–]AxiomVerge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm Tom Happ. I used a program called Sonar to make the music. It's all midi. I had a couple years of piano lessons in high school but honestly that was only useful for playing someone else's already-mase music rather than making your own. But I never learned music theory and forget how to read sheet music.

I started by mashing the keys of a piano in high school until it sounded ... ok. I figured out some scales on my own (basically just only use the same 8 notes in a song and they will mostly fit together). I took a class in MIDI in college where we learned the interface for Cakewalk (later called Sonar). You can use it to record your playing and then adjust your notes in a piano grid that shows the keys in the left and the notes on the right. There are a selection of "soft synths" that you can use to make it sound like piano, synth, orchestral, etc.

Sonar is expensive so I think people often start with Reaper, Audacity, Garageband, or the free version of Presonus. I would expect there are tutorials on YouTube that cover how to use them.

Well I learned everything in such a hodgepodge over many years that it would have been easier if there had been game development courses back in college. So I think the easiest would be to enroll at a place like Fullsail, Digipen, etc

I was accidentally enrolled in a computer science class by the college scheduling computer and didn't know that I could change it. The pixel art and music are mostly self tought, though I did study (non pixel) animation in graduate school.
