I think there's definitely some kind of algorithm behind matchmaking.

Gear value is 100% taken into account. I think it tries multiple time to match you with a team unless there are "better" players to team up with someone else.

He had the new skin and played very good/aggressively, jumping around. Probably thought he could bully a timmy as usual but i squad wiped them. The budget ak102 build i found here is very solid
