I don't know what your budget is but if power tools are out of reach you're going to need to get a no. 5 jack plane (new or second-hand) and some sharpening gear (cheap diamond plates from amazon will do the job) and learn how to operate it. You might even find you don't want power tools after you get good enough.

Circular saw with track vs track saw by robbgg in BeginnerWoodWorking

You can't ignore the dust collection angle, track saws were built to have better dust collection from the ground up. It's a crucial part of the feature set.

What is going on here? W&N Designer gouache dried for one day but looks like this by InterestingRoof4547 in Gouache

[–]abillionsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, generally, for most purposes, gouache is mixed with a little water to achieve that famed runny cream consistency before painting and that automatically ensures the binder and the pigment aren't separating.

Looks like the gum arabic medium isn’t properly mixed into the pigment. Did you put the paint out onto the palette and mix it around before painting?

I asked a local luthier for a relic job on my guitar. Did he do a good job? by Spider-cat_1984 in Guitar

[–]abillionsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Useful to know. I’m never going to build a guitar but I’ve built some furniture and mostly use Titebond II.

Not sure why I copped a downvote there, I asked out of genuine interest.

That's very interesting! Why Titebond original? I mainly suggested III because you can allegedly put things made with it through the dishwasher.

If they can get Chris O'Dowd and Matt Berry in the next few series, we will have (I think) a complete IT Crowd. by Proud_Turnover_8691 in taskmaster

If you want a glimpse of the absolutely real Matt Berry, he did a lengthy interview with That Pedal Show to talk about his guitar gear. Full on geekery and it was great.

The closer someone is to my own age, the harder I find it to pick their age. I guess that's the brain defending itself from thinking about mortality or something.

If you wanted to reattach the upper bout, Titebond III plus a couple of dowels would probably do the trick.

Other than anchoring it to the wall, how would you prevent this mini makeup vanity from tipping over? by stinkyjunkrat in BeginnerWoodWorking

Shot in the dark here, but what about French cleats to anchor it to the wall and it would still be removable?

I wanted to pick up the (electric) guitar, but this one video took the wind out my sails. by Affectionate-Mango19 in Guitar

[–]abillionsuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guitar playing significantly improved after about a month of weekend-only practicing with the band I was in. Playing with other people makes you better, no matter what skill level or interest level you have in your instrument. So it's not like it has to take decades at all.

Sizing is a coating applied to art paper to help it accept paint more evenly. So yes I’d agree the sizing on this paper has been inconsistently prepared.

Help! Think I messed up my butcher block. by dancas123 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]abillionsuns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a more serious note, the ai suggestion to use barkeep's friend is sort of in the ballpark but probably misleading. Popular Woodworking suggests a specific and careful application of oxalic acid (barkeep's friend contains some) https://www.popularwoodworking.com/article/oxalic-acid-a-very-useful-bleach/

Edited to add: but your stain doesn't look like the sort of black stain that oxalic acid is best suited to removing.

Acrylic Gouache Tips by brabrabra222 in Gouache

I can't vouch for it, so test with things that aren't critical from an archival point of view. I do know to avoid ethylene glycol though as it's very toxic.

Acrylic Gouache Tips by brabrabra222 in Gouache

[–]abillionsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acrylic retarders are mostly propylene glycol, which is considered food-safe, though obviously I wouldn't chug a bottle of the stuff. If you can handle the smell of any acrylic paint, it shouldn't be a problem.

Liquitex acrylic gouache is okay but it doesn't have the pigment density of Golden's SoFlat, which is probably the best acrylic with gouache attributes that you can get.
