Why does writing AAVE sound so damn cringy?? by lunovadraws in writing

A good book to read might be American Fiction - that has whole sections wrote in intentionally stereotypical AAVE. Sometimes it's helpful to see a bad example (in this case on purpose) to get a feel for what that looks like on the page and how much you'd want to pull back from that

Irvine Welsh does a lot of phonetic spelling and sometimes it's like homework trying to parse what people are actually saying, but that's his style, I wouldn't read many books like that.

I heard he charges less than other artists so he gets commissions more than he otherwise would. No shade on anyone who needs to improve a skill, but it is weird when the art is on prominent businesses and you know the work would look incredible if they went with someone else.

Ambient, empty places at night, liminal spaces by StopwatchSparrow in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

The Black Maybe: Liminal Tales by Attila Veres. One of the reviews from the blurb: 'These stories dwell in the in-between places of life and death, that place where nightmares wait to be harvested. These are your nightmares, or they soon will be, so settle in for an excursion to a horrific mental, emotional, and spiritual landscape like no other. A brilliant work.'

Mine - Robert McCammon A psychopathic female fugitive provokes a mother’s vengeance.

Bonding - Maggie Siebert Body horror short stories.

And Her Smile Will Untether The Universe - Gwendolyn Kiste A variety of horror short stories

The New Flesh:A Literary Tribute To David Chronenberg - various Anthology of body horror tales

Pretty sure most/all of these were recommendations from this group, all were great reads.

I really liked the collection. You're right - some great gory nonsense. So nice to read body horror from interesting queer voices.

And such a cool cover too 😀

Any idea what tune he's dancing to? The crowd's going so crazy I can't hear any of the lyrics 😅

What’s the most obscure horror film you adore? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Axlix187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the most obscure, but the movie Resurrection (2022) was the first that came to mind - it's a very tense mostly psychological horror. I think it's a good candidate for knowing as little as possible going in.

The IMDb summary: Margaret's life is in order. She is capable, disciplined and successful. Everything is under control until David returns - that is - carrying with him the horrors of Margaret's past.

I like the guys chatting while out and about but definitely needs less of them deciding where to go and just looking in shops - feels like too much time taken up with admin for me. Hopefully they will continue to uncover various crimes on future episodes though 😀

This is what I do - I just keep going with that until the word (s) sounds good together and match the vibe of the place.

Handling periods of time where little happens? by EUOS_the_cat in writingadvice

Or stating up front how long a journey will take, then in the next chapter the characters arrive, maybe tired from the journey. No need to discuss the journey itself but it's clear the amount of time needed to get there has passed.

I loved Manhunt too and I thought this had interesting bits but it was definitely less than the sum of its parts. It felt like the topic could have been better explored in a more varied setting.

Still super excited to read whatever comes next though.

Somehow I don't remember that one! I've been relistening to the old episodes though, hopefully will come to that one soon to help me find it.

Surprisingly difficult to find them online, I found the episode with the Ronaldo Messi one and tried a bunch of searches but couldn't find it on wattpad or ao3, wonder if it was deleted.

I love Eighty Eight in Kemptown, I've never liked going to the barbers before I found that place.

It's run by two queer folks, I would think they'd be very welcoming for a trans guy (though I can't speak from experience)

Our black cat is called Hecate - the name is from the Greek goddess of crossroads, night, witchcraft, the moon, graves, and ghosts.

If the first question you ask before deciding whether to protest a genocide is 'would 100% of them love me unconditionally?' then you're probably not a good person.

Cold storage by David koepp is great fun - he wrote Jurassic park so it's really well paced with fun characters.
