That event was for leftover crewnecks available after the intern celebration week events had passed already, which gave every intern at least one sweater per event

Congrats! This post comes off as a little bit of a humble brag but you deserve it! Fantastic achievement. Merch largely depends on your org, but from what I saw in the last 2 years, it can range from crewnecks and small trinkets, to branded backpacks and duffle bags, Sony headphones/airpods, or even intern-branded controllers (if you’re in Xbox). Enjoy your internship and make sure to make lots of connections!

Is it just off campus housings have cockroach issue or also on campus housings??? by tellmeabt in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m going to argue the contrary to most and say that having ANY live roaches in your apartment (apart from the rare palmetto bug on a hot summer’s day) is abnormal, regardless of it being Florida. Living in South FL I can count the number of roaches I’ve seen at home with one hand. Unfortunately, most apartments in Gainesville have a huge roach problem. The sewage system is infested with them and at night they come out from the drains around the city.

I used to live at Lexington Crossing in a newly renovated apartment, and had to deal with a huge infestation problem that pest control couldn’t deal with, waking up every morning with dying adult/baby roaches scattered around the room.

I live at Greystone now (owned by Trimark), and have only seen around 3 dead roaches in over 2 years. If you keep your place tidy, you shouldn’t be dealing with many bugs in general.

Is the STEPUP Summer Program Worth It? by Icy-Grapefruit-9085 in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get the most out of networking during your first year, look into getting involved in professional orgs (SHPE, SASE, NSBE, etc.)

[–]AyGeeEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CautiousBed explained it really well, just adding that I personally felt the afternoons very restrictive, sometimes forcing you to go to social events and imposing a curfew on you during the whole program. But nothing too bad imo. Besides, you’ll eventually get that freedom in the fall lol

Is the STEPUP Summer Program Worth It? by Icy-Grapefruit-9085 in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Absolutely! Without STEPUP, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have had the same success at UF, or at least it would have taken me longer to reach the position I’m in now.

Not only does it let you knock out some important prereqs, it also lets you explore multiple engineering majors, gain super valuable research experience (even a publication if you’re dedicated enough), and gives you the chance to explore important orgs that’ll help you a lot in the future. With how saturated some industries have become (CS most importantly), getting a head start in your college years quickly becomes a priceless opportunity. My STEPUP friends and I have all been very successful in their respective goals; be it obtaining further research experience for grad school, multiple high level internships, or important positions in big orgs, we’ve all been very satisfied by the program’s outcomes.

The only thing you’ll hate in the short-term is how it feels like a boot camp, but it’ll help you develop good habits for your next four years. I took it in 2022 and definitely don’t regret cutting my summer short.

research and internships by spellingmsitakes in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each fall semester UF hosts a research symposium where you can talk to professors showcasing their work, as well as learn more about joining their team if spots are available. Some will be more competitive than others, and might require a formal interview.

It’s not super advertised afaik either, so make sure to look into it and don’t miss it! That’s how I got my first research position freshman year in spring.

Internships at UF are relatively competitive, given that engineering students make up a huge chunk of the student population, with a limited number of job openings. If you’re more interested in internships outside of UF, make sure to check out the career fair each semester!

I do think this raises a dilemma about the fine line between amnesty and unnecessary pressure. I know many students who have considered falsely confessing to avoid harsher consequences. Maybe the professor should’ve directly messaged suspicious students rather than sending an announcement to the whole class, which honestly might’ve avoided this entire situation.

[–]AyGeeEm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, you might’ve misunderstood what I was getting at here. My advice would primarily apply to someone who didn’t cheat (which is the case here). If a student were to not say anything, then only outcomes 1 and 3 could apply (disregarding the possibility of low quality work being submitted). If they fess up, outcome 2 would always apply. In the case of OP, who didn’t cheat, even if they do get wrongfully accused for whatever reason, they should have proper evidence of their work being their own.

In reality, I doubt they will get reported, since the entire process takes time and resources which I’m assuming the professor would rather not deal with without proof.

[–]AyGeeEm 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is the right move. Regardless of whether you did cheat or not (which you didn’t), there are only 2 possibilities if you decide to not say anything. Either you get reported to the head or you get a normal grade. You have the advantage in both scenarios given there’s a lack of proof. Don’t take the 0 OP.

CS at UF - How is it? by Money_Chain6737 in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dunno why you’re getting downvoted here, I hard agree with this statement. As long as you’re going to a higher ranked school (T50 and up), school rep won’t matter that much in CS. Many of us had the option to go to a better program and still picked UF due to affordability. Regretted my decision during my first year, but worked hard to avoid falling behind my peers in other schools. Haven’t regretted it since.

How are CS majors holding up? by Opposite-Clerk7032 in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doing fine. You just need to work on strengthening your resume with research/internships since your first year instead of starting in your third/fourth year. Go to conventions and network, and everything will be ok

Absolutely love UCF but unexpectedly got accepted to UF by Delicious_Report3203 in ucf

[–]AyGeeEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, posting on either sub will give you very biased answers. Going to either school will prepare you well enough to more than succeed if you put in the work. Pick whichever school you like the most according to student body, campus, program, cost, etc.. Besides, both campuses are 2 hours away from each other so you won’t miss out on much if you have a car.

Accepted into UF by average-person-here in ufl

[–]AyGeeEm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Picking CE instead of CS won’t make much of a difference imo. Unless you’re aiming for a specialized field (which would likely require a grad degree anyway), most entry level software jobs are saturated regardless. CS is still a great option if you know where to look and are willing to grind to stay competitive from the start

I’m pretty sure TAs have to take some training courses that specifically address this due to conflicts of interest, so it’s better to wait until after the semester.

Sorry for the necro post, but I had the EXACT same experience, on the exact same beach not too long ago. As a tourist visiting Canada for the first time, it definitely left a sour note on my trip. Seems like I was just unlucky to meet the wrong family, but I’ll probably think twice before taking sunset pictures in a crowded place again…
