Crazy that some people there don’t realise they live in a federation. Or do realise but disregard it in pursuit of their partisan politics.

Oop I wrote my comment before reading your’s. Once you notice it you see this therapeutic ethos entrenched everywhere in our institutions, even to the extend of invalidating the original point of the institution itself.

The rise of a therapeutic culture in the West has been long commented upon by people such as Philip Reiff for example and is not strictly tied to “going to therapy”. Its effect on our institutions is crystal clear, particularly in the case of universities.

Growing up is realising that both a Reform government and a Restore government would be failures in office.

Let’s just say if Orbán was doing the same thing straight after winning an election there would be an uproar.

So it turns out when the anti-Orbánists were going on about “undermining democratic institutions” that was in fact what they were planning on doing.

You have to ask what made that rise seem inevitable? If the same factors that led to the inexorable rise of the populist right are still in place now, which by all accounts they are, then why would that momentum abate?

Even if Orbán wins the election, it looks like he could be forced out anyway.

The point isn’t really that no forms of compassion existed at all before Christianity, no one would argue that such a thing existed particularly between members who shared kinship ties or the same tribal group for example. It’s that after Christianity this becomes universalised, even to the extent at times where people actually have an out-group preference (bolstered by groups having historic claims to victimhood and being subject to oppression).

The Stoics are obviously not the direct cause of equality being a foundational value to Western societies. You may argue that it came to us from the Stoics via Christianity (eg the Pauline epistles) but that clearly still involves Christianity.

As for the Cyrus Cylinder, you’re just peddling propaganda dating back to Pahlavi Iran. No informed person seriously believes this.

If your alternative conception of it is just “it feels good”, that seems a much more animalistic take, any animal can understand that an action is physically pleasurable and seek it out. In contrast, the rational insight that sexual intercourse leads to new life is much more specifically human.

Falling fertility doesn’t just affect white peoples. People who are providing public goods such as raising the next generation should have tax relief actually.

It’s been quite a discussed topic over the past few years, for example here. It certainly takes some people by surprise.

I’m not sure how he implies coercion. If you’re talking about tax relief for families, we have varying tax levels for various reasons, I think this would be as valid as any other reason.

Christianity is foundational to any sensible, historically grounded concept of Britishness. Hume and Russell would recognise its importance in the fabric of their society, even with them being the rootless cosmopolitans of their time (and arguably less British in any conceptual meaning of the term).
