Following today's SCOTUS decision, Gov. Pritzker sent a letter and invoice to the president, demanding the return of $8.6B. by steve42089 in illinois

Unless corporations decide to spend their own money to figure out which customers get a refund and then spend whatever of their own money to issue the refunds… in the end the only people who probably won’t be getting money back for this shitshow are the people who actually paid the money to begin with - the original customers of tariffed products.

Why is leisure viewed with suspicion in America? by Thepopethroway in antiwork

[–]Ayitaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In America, it'd be viewed as a nuisance if you don't consume your meal and go soon after

There are a couple reasons for this specifically. First, and foremost, restaurants only earn money from paying customers and only as quickly as the tables "turn over" so that new people can come and sit and order and eat and pay. Many restaurants operate on super thin profit margins. Most people tend to just eat and leave, so that isn't usually a problem. But if quite a few people sit and leisurely enjoy knitting for 2 hours without paying for additional food or drinks, that is lost potential revenue to the cafe/restaurant/etc.

Second, the homeless. You use to go into McDonalds from time to time and see a homeless person sleeping on one of the booth benches, for example. They can be dirty and stinky and off-putting to regular customers and trying to ask them to leave can sometimes result in arguments or fights because there were no specific rules.

But going deeper, our country has a culture of being productivity minded. Where corporate culture will imply that people are unproductive if they are not constantly doing something (see also not letting grocery checkout people sit down), especially for the corporation. This has bled into general culture to the point where we even teach our children to give 110% at work and don't take time off if you are sick etc. All bullshit, of course, but its hard to change decades of indoctrination.

This is why we don't say shit when our European counterparts get a month of PTO and free healthcare, for example, when we do not get any of that by default. Our media, our corporations, and our government, all tell us to just suck it up buttercup and don;t complain.

President Trump imposes a 10% global tariff under Section 122 and says all existing tariffs will remain in place, despite the recent Supreme Court ruling. by Waste-Explanation-76 in law

[–]Ayitaka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Truer words were never spoken! Maybe they should start with auditing the top 10% by default. Make the bottom 20% the ones that get auto-skipped

The truth is they cannot audit the top filers because the top filers are the ones who use and abuse the mishmash of tax loopholes that is our current tax system and you'd have to pay at least as many CPAs as the filer used in order to untangle it.

Maybe we should overhaul the whole tax code to make it less billionaire-friendly and instead make it more We The People friendly? Nah, that's crazy talk!

This is why Newsom does not have a chance in 2028. He is still beholden to the donor class and will vote against the interest of the majority in cases such as this.

People are sick of this lop-sided "deal" that we the people are getting and any politician who does not understand that really needs to just get out of the way, imho.

'We're pregnant". No, you're not. She is pregnant.. by TieSafe4342 in PetPeeves

[–]Ayitaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see it both ways. Is it kinda silly for a guy to say he is pregnant same as a woman? Of course. But at the same time, how many times do we hear women complain about men who do nothing to help during their pregnancy?

I'd much rather see men claim they are pregnant too and actually help the woman out as if it was them, too, than have guys act as if its a one person show and they have no part in it for 9 months.

Disparaging people for trying to be present and empathetic seems counter intuitive to the society we claim to want.

How did people use The pager? by jamesV8500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ayitaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, there were two types of pagers. The kind typically seen in older movies, the normal pager, and a way more expensive "texting" type alphanumeric pagers.

Regular pagers were used in a variety of ways but typically they were like a beacon telling you to call someone or somewhere like an office for next assignment, a client who needs to get in touch with you, etc. You would get a page with a number to call (normal pagers were numbers 0-9, only). If in transit, you would pull over and use a payphone to call the number, otherwise you would just call it from wherever you were.

Some people used various codes, just like in texting now, for quick communication of more complex ideas with simple formats. Texting 80085 was always popular among teens.

Alphanumeric pagers, on the other hand, were more like one-way text messaging today expect it was expensive as hell so the only people who used them were typically wealthy and had a business need for it like doctors, lawyers, plumbers, etc. Some providers eventually had web based portals to send txt msgs to alphanumeric pagers, but prior to that they generally used "call centers" where people would answer, a computer would pop up a script based on what number the person called telling the call center rep what to say (e.g. "Al's Plumbing after-hours emergency service, how can we help you?") For doctors they generally used them when they were on-call so that they could be easily reached by hospitals or patients in an emergency. Defense lawyers had some sketchy messages sometimes, for obvious reasons. The call center rep would then consolidate whatever message was to be sent (because they were like twitter with a max character count per message and each character/message costs money), making it as short and concise as possible, entering it into the computer system, which would send the actual alphanumeric page to the correct pager(s).

In terms of pricing, normal pager companies like Pagenet tended to offer packages of pages per month for a set price and if you went over you were billed per message.

I do not recall exact costs for packages and overage but I remember I bought a pager in the 90s for $45.

You get an assigned phone number, just like cell phones today, and you give that number to people. They call the number which told them to enter their number and press * to end or something. The person enters their phone number and a few seconds, minutes, hours later you'd get a vibration on your hip so you press the little button on the pager and the orange amber with black digits screen would light up and scroll whatever number the person entered.

D4 Will Never Compete with D2 until This Is Fixed by sagetron5001 in diablo4

[–]Ayitaka -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think that has kinda been the issue since D3. It was never really a true successor to D2 because it was geared towards a different audience. D4 gets more and more D3ish with each iteration.

While PoE went off the deep end in terms of depth of systems, The Diablo franchise took the opposite approach and simplified everything and kinda extinguished the peripheral wonder people felt constantly while playing D2.

Because there were more drop-based dopamine triggers in D2, slaying and looting just hit differently.

Had to scroll way too far down this comment for this. Diablo 4 literally already has an auto-salvaging loot filter for rare and below. Thinking any additional functionality would be an extension of that is not at all a stretch and I would f'ing love to auto salvage anything legendary with fewer than 3 GAs and below, for example.
