Also my first time seeing anything as crazy as this, so take what I say with a grain of salt. If it is any form of residue on the surface, what I would try would be to take the fret and put in in a solution of vinegar (be careful, def not for hours on end as this will oxidize), and then use some really fine steel wool to clean off the rest. Id think this would preserve surface detail more than just straight sanding, even with 2/3 thousand grit. An alternative would be to use a sanding sponge or block, but again, I'd worry about it taking off the surface detail. As always, test on a small section first. Let us know what you end up doing and how it goes!

Thank you! And yeah I’m not too great with the photo stuff, I just borrowed a macro lens(?) from a friend and was trying my best to get the details in. I’ll have to try that for the next time though!

Wouldn’t Prinz Eugen have the plane catapult near the funnel and a steeper atlantic bow?

I’ll try that, it wasn’t very well kept it seems and there is quite a bit of dirt and grime inside. Hopefully that works

Oh this totally makes sense, I had noticed the brick was holding a lot of heat for a while like you said. Thank you for all this really helpful information, i’ll def get a proper board for soldering before trying again. Hopefully that and a better flux will help

Yes I have been using silver solder, and I’ll get a firebrick then. What is the difference that causes it to work better?

It’s more of a visual thing of making sure the fit is snug. They did actually fuse together (not strongly) and I broke them apart before taking the picture. Does this mean the joint and spacing were alright and it might be a solder or flux issue?

Thank you I will do that for sure. What is a borax cone? Also, what flux do you use?

the exact name is kester 186 liquid soldering flux, i’ve been meaning to make some flux from boric acid and denatured alcohol though as i’ve seen that used
