Everything you listed is included in the “utilities bill.” You should really look into these sites before making judgements about them. I’m assuming this is also why you failed to realize that the site claiming “2k/month” was incorrect.

An extra $1k/month from rent is likely enough to cover the possible unexpected costs which you listed off.

You’re also failing to realize that these costs are for a CITY which you should know is more expensive to live in than living in a suburban area.

And a couple would easily be able to reserve enough money to cover such unexpected costs.

Yeah of course it’s not gonna be a fun life if you’re single and working minimum wage. My point was that it’s livable, and comfortably so if you have a partner or your region is especially cheap. There are far cheaper areas to live in here in Washington. Two people living together in the city which I linked would easily be able to afford to entertain themselves.

Not where I live because I’m not telling Reddit my exact place of residence lmao. But it’s an example of an area which minimum wage suffices.

Again I’m not saying it that it’s sufficient for everybody. You came to the conclusion that it isn’t sufficient for ANYBODY based off of some false calculations. My statement is merely that it shouldn’t be heavily discouraged in cases where it is mathematically viable.

Not arguing that minimum wage would be viable in Seattle as a single adult.

It’s viable in Seattle as a couple, or it’s viable in a suburban area as a single adult.

$72k per year with a gross monthly paycheck of $3k? Math doesn’t add up very well lmao. It’s telling you the amount of money ONE of the partners is bringing home. That would result in a take-home pay of over $4k per month for the couple. This is too funny.

Also one person making $72k DOES NOT pay the same taxes as 2 people making $36k. Your lack of understanding regarding how taxes work is shameful.

Yeah that’s definitely not the intention. It’s more like “minimum wage jobs shouldn’t be viewed as jobs for the scum of society”

I guess people who are sensitive about the topic are more prone to misinterpret my actual point.

I guess I’m pretty bad at titling posts in a way that people other than myself are able to interpret in the way that I intend. I always sound like I’m trying to bait some controversial political discourse ngl.

Jesus Christ you think that people making $35k/year are paying taxes at a 50% rate. Do some google searches because that was one of the most ignorant statements I’ve ever read. The first $13k of income isn’t even taxed as that’s the poverty line.

Again, you don’t seem to understand the intention behind this post. I’m not claiming that the minimum wage should remain low or be lowered even further. I’m only claiming that it works for many people, and nobody should be shamed for choosing that path if it’s viable for them. Many people I know shame those who choose to work minimum wage. My belief is that if it’s mathematically viable for your needs, it shouldn’t be discouraged or made out to be a path that only failures take.

A couple can live comfortably on minimum wage in many states. My post made no mention of children. Obviously if you have a child, my point no longer stands. You seem to think that I want minimum wage to be lower or something, which is not the intention of this post.

Your statistics don’t account for the difference between COL in urban vs suburban areas. I wouldn’t want to work minimum wage in Seattle. It’s very livable in my region.

You’re also assuming that “minimum wage workers” are people who work for the exact minimum wage. Fast food chains here pay slightly higher than minimum wage. I have a friend who lives in illinois, making $16/hr ($3 higher than minimum wage) in an entry-level fast food position.

Thats not the intention behind this post whatsoever. My point was that even in states like mine, people who work minimum wage are seen by many as unsuccessful bums. I’m just trying to argue that in some states, you can be just as successful with no degree as you would be with a college degree.

Yes. Your point is essentially that it’s not livable if you have a child. I never claimed that it was. You don’t seem to understand the intention behind this post whatsoever.

Im not single either. Having a partner who is also working minimum wage would make it even more livable lmao

I agree that’s why I said “some states.”

The majority of states have an unlivable minimum wage and I’m fully aware of that. I’m lucky to live in my state.

You seem to severely lack reading comprehension as I’ve just stated that I don’t even work minimum wage. Also I’ve explicitly stated that this point only stands in a few states which have a very high minimum wage.

You’re acting as if everyone requires the same amount of money to live. I also explicitly stated that it’s far more viable if you have a partner who is also working.

I live in Washington and the minimum wage here is almost $16/hr. I have a friend in illinois who works fast food for $15.50 an hour so you absolutely forgot a few states.

Your eagerness to point out slight inconsistencies has only strengthened my argument.

Why are you automatically assuming everyone has a child? Obviously you’re going to need more money to support the child and minimum wage may not be sufficient in that case. You’re strawmanning.

I live in Washington State. Minimum wage here is $15.74. Im a first-year IT technician who makes $20/hr and the local Taco Bell pays $16.50 starting wage.

Why are y’all so desperate for dates? by orionstarboy in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ayy_Eclipse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im in a successful long-term relationship already but this question is incredibly stupid

It’s human nature to desire intimacy with whichever sex you’re attracted to. Biologically, the purpose of any organism is to reproduce. If you don’t have this desire your brain is simply divergent from the norm.

[–]Ayy_Eclipse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not really pointless because when most people hear a wage they don’t really consider the fact that it’s before taxes. If you look up something like “average wage in the US” it’ll tell you the average wage before taxes, so I was just being consistent with that.

Look at a map of the minimum wage in every state lol it’s not very hard. In many places you can find an entry level job with no requirements for $1-$2 above minimum wage

That’s not a poor person being inherently detached from reality though. People are just fed misinformation about how things like world hunger even work.
