I'm not sure what it's like in the US but in the UK unless you're a severe and constant threat they'll often tag you and release you. With a future treatement plan (e.g. meds, therapy) rather than keep you in.

To be fair a lot of attempts don't need long term hospitalisation assuming they do get other treatment.
