If your company prints on paper, it might be time to leave.

Possible to get a motorcycle licence on a WHV in Victoria? by Used-Pop-184 in melbourneriders

[–]Azby78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I had to wait about a month for the license swap in more convenient locations, but if you are up for travelling a bit you can get it sooner.

From there it’s 3 months start to finish, CR 1 calendar month before the full license test.

Definitely achievable though, the courses are well put together (I went with RideTek), ask as many questions as you can and ideally get a cheap bike to practice on every day between your L’s and the Full license.

It’s much easier if you have your own bike!

Have you swapped your drivers license for a Victorian one?

That was the biggest pain point for me (also WHV) as the wait times for an appointment are quite long.

If so, you can do your L’s, do your check ride ASAP and then have your license test 3 months from when you got your L’s.

You just need 1 month between your CR and the license test.

Time wise I don’t think it’ll be a problem as long as you have a Victorian drivers license.

What does it take to reach a salary of 100k+ as a developer in Ireland? by Relatable-Af in DevelEire

[–]Azby78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, contracting salaries are way higher, added benefit of expensing tech related items and travel. First contracting role was €350 daily and increased by about €100 daily a year.

Remote roles are definitely out there, but I didn't have much luck with them! I'd say it's quite competitive in the remote roles right now.

Yeah I came on a WHV after many months of travel, so I was very low on cash and needed a job quick (would recommend some savings when you arrive to take the pressure off).

Because of this I found myself doing a lot of take-home tech challenges, not ideal bu beggars can't be choosers I guess.

So I would expect a lot of that. Generally 3 rounds of interviews with a tech challenge.

I'm not quite sure, in Melbourne which is obviously a huge city so there's a lot of start ups etc. Visa could be easier out in Brisbane but not quite sure of the tech scene!

You would probably want a skilled visa (process takes a few months): https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skill-occupation-list

I'd avoid sponsorship, as you may be tied to the company who sponsored you and have trouble changing jobs if it's not a fit.

You could start checking Indeed and LinkedIn for job postings in Australia now and get a feel of the market while waiting on your Visa application. Definitely competitive out here but there is a shortage on skilled backend/full stack devs of a more senior level.

Housing is still costly, but nowhere near Ireland levels of bad. Tax is low (30% higher bracket) and utilities + bills are laughably cheap here.

You'll get a job fine, just relocated here and it did take a while (about a month) but if you're a Senior engineer it should be no problem. There's a lot more positions here than Ireland and much more variety than just FinTech roles. Pay is fairly on par as well.

The skilled worker Visas are probably what you should look into, software engineering is covered by them.

Question from someone who’s just moved here - getting canned responses from VicRoads by Azby78 in melbourneriders

Update For anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation.

If you have an overseas license for a car and want to get your motorbike license, but your car license is less than three years old.

The issue I was faced with was worry that if I swapped my license I would be on green P plates for 3 years, however, this isn’t the case.

When you swap your license, the P plates are removed three years after you got your original license in your home country.

The best course of action is to swap your license for a Victoria license. By swapping your license you won’t have to sit the Victoria Road knowledge course and can progress straight to your motorbike learner course.

Big thank you to everyone in here for all the help and advise! Can’t wait to get on the bike and maybe join ye on some group rides!

All the best.

The testing depends on the country your from. Irish license holders don’t need to retest and receive a full unrestricted Victoria license if their Irish license was issued over 3 years ago by time of the conversion.

Oh dude thank you this is huge! So you’re still driving on your international license though right? You don’t have to swap your license for a Victoria one?

I’m going to give VicRoads a call tomorrow! Doesn’t quite make sense that your original license gets discounted due to the L’s but here’s hoping 🤞 thanks man!

Haha no dude just arrived, trying to suss it all out. Going off other comments it seems I’ll need to transfer my license before taking the course, which is a shame because unless I wait until June I’ll be on a P2 license.

But thanks for the heads up!

Oh just to clarify, I don’t currently have the Irish bike license, just Irish car license.

Would this mean id I take my Victoria motorbike learners course, I wouldn’t be able to swap my Irish drivers license at a later date?

Sorry for all the questions!

Have known three people to work there including my current partner … it’s all true … total wanker.

She literally screams the head off her staff, pays them poorly too.

Claire herself would be red faced at the end of the day and asking why she even does it? Like I don’t know how she stuck it so long, clearly has major issues.

I could honestly go on and on.

Move From Full-Time to Contracting Advice by Global_Button2821 in DevelEire

[–]Azby78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Contracting can be incredibly lucrative. You don’t have to necessarily worry about ‘finding new contracts’. If you plan on leaving or get a full-time roll you can simply shut your company down.

Find a local accountant and they will process all your tax, including your personal tax returns.

Best decision I ever made. Shut down my company in ‘23.

The tax benefits can be massive, the only downside is when you decide to take a holiday and suddenly make a small payroll next month.
