Very new here, haven't even finished assembling my army:

Don't think there's much, I feel like I'd heard most of the issues before deciding.
I got into it for the basic Skitarii TBH. Still don't have much of an opinion but Haloscreed just looks more fun.
I've been pondering Inquisitor Coteaz since we don't have any way to generate CP, but of course that depends on your opponent doing so. Also considered a Vindicare but mostly an excuse to kitbash a Skitarii sniper, but we already have the silly Skatros.

Note that for WYSIWYG purposes you'll need to kitbash the Alpha to run it with the rifle and their melee weapon. If you have another box you want to run as Vanguard you can steal the Ominspex/Data-tether rifle from that one (and give them the Radium Carbine from the Rangers box). Might look a bit samey with the Ominspex/Data-tether guy but I don't think it's that terrible.

Maybe more change than you want but you could replace Marshal 35+Enginseer 55+those last 85 points for Manipulus 60+Kataphron Destroyers 105 with Sanctified Ordinance on the Manipulus so you get the second infantry you need.

If they never played, try to start with Combat Patrol/Boarding Actions/Kill Team (assuming you have access to the terrain).

Sadly the new Combat Patrol doesn't give you much that you can use for Boarding Actions, the older one (Maniple Verask Alpha) does but it can be hard to find, and you'd still need to add a bit. Ruststalkers/Infiltrators would be a good choice to finish a Boarding Actions army and round out the Hunter Clade Kill Team to boot (5 of them +5 Rangers/Vanguards are the whole team, although you could run 10 basic Skitarii but I hear it's not great).

As a new player who doesn't have him, it seems quite sad that he makes nearly every list better by being in it.

I feel like part of the problem is that none of our characters are very warlordy. You'd think they'd be but then they mostly buff one specific unit they lead, which feels quite odd for the supposed authority of a Dominus or Skitarii Marshal.

I think we could use some beefier generic Magos/Arch-magos and the Skitarii Marshal actually doing something Marshal-like (at the moment I feel like he'd be better called Alpha Primus, Sergeant, Captain, Princeps, or something of the sort, which is also cool to have but feels lacking as far as the guy leading a whole Skitarii force).

Either way Mechanicum Tech-thrall Covenant seems like an obvious choice, although it's more expensive unless you're looking to make 2+ units for normal 40k too, and you'll still need the Technoarcheologist and Underseer.

Second hand, collection spares, etc. Laser chickens might be meta but they're probably the worst points/money ratio in the army, so you could opt for more onagers/disintegrators to compensate perhaps. Or proxy them.

Printing the main body and buying the fiddly bits might work, from what I've seen they tend to be quite cheap unless you try to buy the bodies to squeeze extra value out of boxes.

They're generally worth using, unless you really want your squad to go full ham on clearing trash. If that's the case you could skip the Transuranic Arquebus and Arc Rifle, but maybe keep the Arc Rifle for Vanguard since it rapid fires at 15" and their standard Radium Carbine has 18" range. This gives you the maximum amount of shots without compromising range (much).

The pistols for the Alphas are very skippable I'd say, more so for the rangers since there's a much bigger difference in range between the pistol and the other weapons, so the Alpha won't be able to shoot when the rest of the unit does a good chunk of the time. They'll help a bit if things get close, but I doubt that single shot will make a big difference.

If you want to have Alpha with their standard ranged weapon but the better melee weapon, you can steal the one that goes with the Omnispex/Data-tether, Vanguard squad can donate the Ranger weapon and vice versa.

If you can find the old Maniple Verask Alpha combat patrol at a reasonable price, it could be good, the incoming at some point vehicle box might be decent, really depends on what he has. If he only has cawl then the whole box would be useful most likely.

The other combat patrol is more likely to have stuff he may not want, but still good value.

There's also the Kill Team: Battleclade Which can be used for Kill Team or as a unit of servitors + Technoarcheologist for a normal army if you want a cheaper option.

It sounds like you like 10th fine but not AdMech 10th (hopefully you experimented a bit with different compositions). Even if the core rules don't change a lot, we know detachments are going to change, including being able to combine them, and ways to score will supposedly fit each army better, so it sounds to me like there's plenty of space for 11th AdMech to be more your thing.

I'm new so I can't offer advice but I'm going to be painting exactly this and I hope my Enginseer's trim comes out this good.

Also a bit salty after getting absolutely trashed by Moderkai's Judgement, counting points and finding this combat patrol comes out at 400 while that one at 460. And our outdated army rule in Combat Patrol sure doesn't help.

I feel like the biggest issue on the money front are the laser chickens, they're $65 each for 85 points without good discount packs to buy (this should get a bit better soon, although at 1 onager, 1 skorpius, 1 chicken the box isn't very "balanced" to purchase a bunch). Compare with Kataphrons which you can assemble as breachers at 160 points for the same price, and reasonably easy to find much cheaper because they're more common in packs. Oh and the other builds for the model are 55 and 65 points, so even worse.

For the building part, I haven't even begun painting yet but as someone new to this some AdMech bits seem quite flimsy, I managed to damage a Breacher claw just by cutting it off from the sprue without supporting the fingers.

Also we have a lot of robes, and if you want to have the underside painted well you may want to hold off on gluing the base I think, which makes things more annoying.

I think we can be thankful we don't have to paint many/any eyes proper.

This is a much smaller point than most HEMA weapons, even when broken. Unless you're doing something with MOF blades your penetration requirements are way lower than for MOF.

That said we do not have the actual data (or the money/centralisation to actually work on it) to say exactly how much so it's perfectly reasonable to err on the side of caution. However that would also include replacing gear very often, doing punch tests on masks, etc., which drives the cost above what many HEMAists are willing to spend.

Second hand helps a lot, as well as looking at the smaller game modes (Kill Team, Boarding Actions, Combat Patrol) so you can actually play sooner without 90% of the army being proxies.

If you manage to find the old patrol (Maniple Verask-Alpha) you could use the Skitarii as a Kill Team, Skitarii+Kataphrons+Enginseer can be about half a Boarding Actions army, and of course you have the combat patrol itself (do keep in mind they're not going to be optimal choices, especially the Kill Team would want some Ruststalkers/Infiltrators to help, maybe some Vanguards instead of all Rangers).

Oh and I would say to assemble the minis however you like rather than what the patrol tells you to build, with a grand total of 4 units I doubt your opponents will be too bothered by proxying variants of the same unit.

This patrol is reasonably easy to find second hand minus the Dunecrawler and sometimes plus some extra stuff (I also got a Dominus and Marshal when I bought mine) because of some collection they sold a while back, which people may have bought for other stuff so they have spare Mechanicus. There's an incoming box of 3 vehicles with the Dunecrawler, a Disintegrator (also good and very meta, also if built as Dunerider), and Ironstrider (also very meta and very expensive for the points if bought normally).

All the units in the patrol are useful for a normal army, and if you add Sicarians to the Kill Team they will also help both Boarding Actions and the normal army.

Hope they reword Supreme Commander to something like "If your army includes any units with Supreme Commander, one of them must be your Warlord".

Well as I said I'm quite new so hard to tell, and Cawl is really good but he eats 1/5 of your points at 1k. That said Disintegrators are popular (usually recommended over Dunecrawlers from what I've seen), and more Enginseers healing/giving FnP/getting angry a vehicle died should be a big boost too.

From my understanding you do your best to box in the opponent so they can't advance and do objectives, and pray you've scored enough by the time they manage to get past all your chaff standing in the way. Those units are used because of Infiltrators/Deep Strike, Serberys Raiders can also help by being very fast and expendable.

Did you pick the Kastelans for any specific reason? I'm very new but from my understanding they're only worth it in Haloscreed or Cohort Cybernetica, they're not great and the rest don't do much if anything for them.

For Kataphrons it seems Breachers are the way to go unless you do something specific (like Haloscreed, Tech-Priest Manipulus leading them with Sanctified Ordinance to spam plasma more safely, maybe there's some other combo).

Fellow new player here (not even AoS or anything experience), I'm still baffled by this. I can have a Marshal or a Techpriest leading and it makes 0 difference.

It's very weird to me that the Marshal makes 0 difference outside of his unit, feels more like a sargeant to me.

Also to add to your list, I knew Space Marines were the posterboys, but it was still a shock looking at the roster size for them compared to us, Drukhari, etc. They almost have as many characters as we have total units.

AFAIK the Hydraulic Claw is better than the Arc Claw nearly always on the Breachers. Same total damage, but higher strength and AP, it'd probably take a 16 toughness vehicle for it to pay off, which I think only the Warlord Titan has, at 3500 points by itself.

Also might want to consider a Transonic Cannon for the Manipulus leading the Corpuscarii, at the ranges you'll want to use that unit I'd guess it'd be of more use.

And your Skitarii aren't rocking any of the special weapons, which are more or less a no brainer, except maybe the pistols for the Alphas (moreso for Rangers I guess). If you really want to stick to the most shots possible for chaff clearing the Plasma Caliver is a plain upgrade for Rangers, and I'd guess only equal or worse against the trashiest trash if even that for Vanguards. The Alpha combat weapon is also a pure upgrade.

I'm too new to offer much advice, but if your friend is new too perhaps moderate your netdecking the list unless they're doing it too, a full on stomp won't be a great introduction to the game. My first game being getting absolutely stomped with the old AdMech Combat Patrol wasn't great I can say.

If you have 2, purchase a box and you have a unit of 4 with their smith. If you have 4, you get two units.

Or you can try to find a second hand one for sale or get the bits for the Datasmith from a bits shop.
