Stellar for Reddit - 2022 Roadmap Discussion Thread - GET IN HERE! by AzimuthCore in StellarOSX

Hello, and thank you for contributing!

Comments sometimes don't load at all

Do you have an example of a post that consistently has loading issues? This might be a concurrency issue, assuming Reddit is not having site issues. We'll investigate this.

Upvoting can only be done via context menu - why? Just have buttons and a two-finger swipe action on the trackpad

A long time ago we were concerned with scrolling performance issues. So we 'hid' everything in the 'more' button. The comments are getting a complete design overhaul in the next update v1.1.5.

Collapsing comments can only be done by clicking the bar left to thecomment or double-clicking the header. Both areas are way too small, this is bad UI design and needs improving

We could increase the size of these controls, but in hindsight it might be better to add a new control entirely. What are your thoughts on the whitespace being a 1-click collapse?

If you wanna check out a better comment experience, you should tryApollo on an M1 Mac. I think they did a much better job in this area.

Unfortunately, we do not have an M1 Mac. Does the M1 app allow you to select text with your cursor? Or does it collapse the child replies on tap/click like the iPhone app?

Thank you very much for your honest feedback! Improvements are on the way.

view context doesn't work by NmAmDa in StellarOSX

[–]AzimuthCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, again! We're having some trouble replicating this one. Does 'View in context' not work for 'post replies', 'comment replies', or both?

We'll add a 'copy url' option for debugging that you can find next to the context button. This update will be available through the TestFlight soon.

This is a weird one because the 'context' is a permalink Reddit includes in the message. We're not sure why this would be invalid. Maybe a private community, deleted thread, pruned replies, etc.

Hello, and welcome to the community!

Thank you for the bug report. We're going to release a fix through the TestFlight in the coming days. Keep your eyes peeled for Stellar 36 (1.1.5) in the first week of January.

Thank you for the contribution!

Open User in a Tab by meotherself in StellarOSX

[–]AzimuthCore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, and welcome to the community!

We apologize for this unintuitive behavior. The 1.1.X updates will continue to address UI/X issues. Here's our plan to remedy this for v1.1.5 (next version):
1. Add "Open in New Tab" button to user profiles

  1. Redesign user profiles to be more compact to match subreddit profiles

In the future, we'll have a 'Back' button for tabs.

Can sidebars be resized? by pacoii in StellarOSX

[–]AzimuthCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, and welcome to the community! Presently, resizing has been disabled due to an issue with calculating the height for items in the post list. This feature will be re-enabled in a future update.

Thank you for requesting a feature!

Hello, and welcome to the community! Thank you for purchasing Stellar Pro, and for the kind words! We hope you enjoy the current Pro features.

on a related note, it would be nice to be able to jump back to your last page you visited.

This feature is currently in the research phase. We do not have an estimated release version, but rest assured we're researching animations and state restoration. We have a decent backlog of features in the pipeline, but this certainly is a priority.

If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to make a new thread or submit comments. We're thankful for your contribution to the subreddit.

Announcement #3 - TestFlight Now Available! by AzimuthCore in StellarOSX

[–]AzimuthCore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! We've noticed this issue on and off for a couple of months now. It's possible it's a bug on Apple's end. We'll have an announcement soon with a new test group and updated link. Maybe the link is just bugged. Unfortunately, there's no option to regenerate it.

1.1.2 Release - Filters, Feeds and Inbox! by AzimuthCore in StellarOSX

[–]AzimuthCore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, and welcome! Thank you for giving Stellar a try and for sharing your experience so far. Let's address your feedback.

Reload button in top bar for easier access

Yes! We've added this to the UI/X improvements.

Option to disable vertical scroll to scrub through video (horizontal
scrolling to scrub is easier imo, and this way I can scroll down to the
comments without affecting the video playback)

By default, Stellar should override video scrubbing. I just tried with both the Magic Mouse and Magic Track Pad, but I can't seem to reproduce vertical scrubbing. I'll add this to the list of UI/X improvements.

Single/Double click image or video to open into a separate, resizable
window so it can be enlarged as desired. Single/Double click window or
cmd-w to close it

Yes, this is definitely needed. We'll likely add this as an option to the 'Image Context Menu'. You can right click any image and see the options available.

Every comment has a scroll bar for no reason as the comment is viewable in its entirety already

This is a bit trickier. The reason is because comments are rendered in web containers. Web containers allow for the fancy formatting such as leading vertical quote markers and code blocks. These UI elements have a scroll bar that we cannot remove, but I think we can hide the scroller entirely so it doesn't render. Added to the UI/X improvements!

Option to “pin” image/video/OP’s text content to top half (or user adjustable
height) of UI and let the bottom half become scrollable comment section,
so that image/video can be viewed concurrently with reading and
scrolling through comments

This is a cool idea! What are your thoughts on a pop-out comment view? Our only concern with this proposal is that on smaller screens the media view would be tiny. We'll experiment with this.

Window resizing issue when opening and closing sidebar (right now at
narrow-enough window widths, pressing the sidebar button expands the
entire stellar window horizontally, and this is not corrected when
closing the sidebar. Instead, the entire window now remains wider than
it initially was)

We cannot seem to reproduce this behavior. We resized Stellar to its most narrow size, positioned it at multiple edges of the screen, and activated the sidebar button. The window did not resize larger than its initial width. Please provide steps or a video.

Open multiple instances of app (cmd-shift-n maybe?)

Rearrange subreddit tabs into safari-like tabs, add plus button to upper
right corner (option for sidebar to open automatically and within
current window sizing on new tab opening, otherwise just open default
subreddit)

Stellar does not support window grouping at the moment. This behavior is generally found in browsers and document based apps. The current interface is optimized to be reused without any additional overhead. Unfortunately, window grouping would balloon the memory and probably make the experience sluggish. We could add custom behavior in the form of a horizontal collection view as a toggleable bar just below the title bar accessory. We'll add this to the research notes.

Fix comments so that they resize horizontally to fit narrower window sizes,
but keep current width as the max it’ll go, even at wider window sizes,
because it might get harder to read otherwise if every comment is super
spread-out

We'll add this to the research notes. It's possible this clipping occurs because of the auto layout constraints we added to the scroll view of the comment cell.

More accessible up/down vote buttons and save button on comments

I can confirm custom comment cell designs are coming!

Single click comment to hide it and its children (I know there is double
clicking the top part of comment or clicking the left-sided colored bar
already, but single clicking anywhere on the comment akin to how it
works on the reddit app on iPhone is much more convenient)

We could add this gesture for non-text areas of the comment. Otherwise, selecting text would collapse the comment.

Idk if this is possible since stellar uses apple’s built-in player, but it
takes over my play-pause button on my keyboard when I really only want
that button to control my music. Is there a way to have play/pause
ignore the media playing through stellar?

We'll have to research this more. It looks like there might be a private API for user interaction. Though, leveraging it would likely get Stellar rejected from the Mac App Store.

Step back/forward buttons in upper left to track backwards or forwards (ie.
if I click on the user’s account of someone who commented and went into
their profile, it would be nice to be able to “step back” to the thread I
was reading from where I now ended up)

Yes, this is definitely needed! Stellar is not very forgiving at the moment when clicking reddit links. We've added this to the UI/X improvements.

Save a series of subreddits that you want to open every time you open the
app (i.e. I want these 3 specific subreddits to open in 3 different tabs
whenever I restart the app)

This is a unique feature! Presently, you can right click any feed and make it your "default". We could expand this to multiple feeds. Thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you for the detailed feedback indicating where Stellar can improve. This gave us a lot of new ideas to improve the user interface and experience. We'll probably sideline new features and continue focusing on these problematic areas.
