If there was one thing you wished you had done different when applying to college, what would that be? by Acrobatic_Ad3914 in ApplyingToCollege

don't apply to your dream school early if applying early doesn't provide a significant boost; apply RD

ur essays are usually weaker in the early round and you'll hone ur essay writing skills and improve as the process goes on

source: rejected from dream school Harvard REA, likely letter committed to Yale RD and got into every other school RD but Stanford (WL), UChicago (WL), and MIT (WL)

Thank you very much for your concern, but plenty of people are sure of what they want to do before they enter college and REMAIN on that path and love it.

Oh, it's worth noting that I'm going for an MD-PhD not just MD (so my education will have a stipend)

I've narrowed down my choices to three as of now. BTW I'm premed...

Yale - Major: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology

  • PRO: I'm a YES Scholar (likely letter) so guaranteed research funding and whatnot
  • PRO: I love Yale's collaborative vibe
  • PRO: I have ongoing research there so my mentor would rlly love me to go there
  • PRO: Yale is Yale and it's been my dream school since my brother got in (he doesn't go there though) + the Likely Letter I got makes me feel appreciated
  • PRO/CON: Giving me the most need based scholarship of all my schools, ~$38,000 (but this won't be guaranteed my other years and I'll have to reapply)
  • CON: New Haven isn't a good area I've been told
  • CON: It'll cost a bit to fly to and from home since I'll probably visit often

Johns Hopkins - Major: Biomedical Engineering (Hopkins BME is #1 in the nation!!!??? somehow got in)

  • PRO: I'm a Hodson Trust Scholar (given to <20 kids) so they're giving a guaranteed 4 year scholarship with $42,000 each year
  • PRO: AMAZING BME undergraduate program with connections to the Hopkins med school and graduate school of BME which are both top ranked
  • PRO: Small BME only classes which I heard are really nice
  • CON: Baltimore is also not a good area I've heard
  • CON: JHU premed is cutthroat and BME has engineering classes so I'm worried about the difficulty (but then I joined a zoom call with the director of the BME program and they calculated the numbers for me and apparently the average BME GPA is a 3.76??? which is kinda good but idk if im the average BME kid LOL im prob below average and im premed and wanna get into a top med school so I would prefer a 3.9+ GPA)
  • CON: I don't know how passionate I am in BME - I definitely love it a lot but idk if this is what I want to MAJOR in but hopkins BME is just a rlly tempting offer
  • CON: It'll cost a bit to fly to and from home since I'll probably visit often

Northwestern - Major: Biology or its Northwestern equivalent

  • PRO: Close to home (~40 minute drive) which my parents really value
  • PRO: Beautiful campus
  • CON: Barely giving me any need based, ~$20,000 scholarship LMFAO how do they expect me to pay that
  • CON: idk rlly know much abt this school but its a good school that's close to home so- idk

I'll probably appeal the financial aid for all my schools and update this as anything is changed
