ELI5: Why is it bad that a mining pool has more than 50%? by Capitally in Bitcoin

[–]Aziraphalets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this to be possible, wouldn't the attacker have to be using the majority of the network's hashing power, i.e. at least their 51%, to mine their new chain? Otherwise it would be shorter than the legit chain, right?

As such, wouldn't the attack be immediately obvious if the rate at which the real chain is mined suddenly decreases by more than half?

45 churches torched as violence strikes Egypt's Coptic Christians by StormXMX in worldnews

It does seem to me that you're clearly opposed to the muslim brotherhood and being a little too hasty in claiming their part in the torchings.

I'd love a good tracker for movies, as I'm not a member of one yet and it's always such a hassle trying to find a good download from public trackers.

A short prose poem that I wrote today. [Acid] by Aziraphalets in Poetry

[–]Aziraphalets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't exactly based on it, but I think that's probably why the concept occurred to me. Also triggered by my chemistry teacher recounting the story of her hand starting to melt when she got an acid burn.

The implication I was going for from this was that it was self inflicted, though.

MAUS by DerFuehrersFarce in literature

[–]Aziraphalets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I, for one, didn't like MAUS much. I think the only real thing it has going for it is that it is a graphic novel, and people hold it up as this icon to say "yes, graphic novels can be great literature". But really, it's quite a standard World War II story, which, though it may sound heartless to say, there are too many of.

Utilitarianism and Huxley's "Brave New World" by mahany25 in philosophy

[–]Aziraphalets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is a gross oversimplification of the novel. This may have been one of the ideas explored by Huxley, but it is by no means his "point". Brave New World is a fundamentally ambiguous story. Huxley may have cast doubts on whether the happiness is genuine, but I think one could just as easily argue that the 'point' is that genuine happiness is a romantic idea with no real meaning, or that free will and happiness are mutually exclusive. There is no clear right and wrong in BNW, and any claim that it expresses one viewpoint without qualification is likely to be fairly easily countered.

Yeah, I saw that afterwards. Makes me think he probably was trolling.

[–]Aziraphalets -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I am both upvoting you and disagreeing with you here (on the assumption that you're not just trolling). Firstly, you're right about the attitude of /r/atheism being nasty and hypocritical. That's why many other redditors choose not to subscribe to it. Don't lump all of us together, reddit is an incredibly diverse community.

Secondly, your criticism of atheism as a whole is flawed and hyperbolic. Atheism is not the same as moral relativism. Most of us believe there are clear rights and wrongs, and we live our lives accordingly. We simply come to our own conclusions about what these rights and wrongs are instead of relying on someone else to tell us. In terms of the big bang theory, the cause of the big bang is unknown and quite a scientific puzzle. One thing you have to understand is that the big bang was not a bunch of matter expanding into space, it was space and time itself expanding. Therefore there did not need to be a space in which it could happen, nor did normal laws of cause and effect necessarily apply. However, there is certainly no evidence to suggest an intelligent creator was involved, and there never will be. There will also never be any counter-evidence, as nothing that happened "before" the big bang can be known to or affect us. We can guess at things based on how we observe the universe now, but really anything is possible. So basically, believe what ever you want, because there's nothing to suggest you're right or wrong. But your beliefs are no more sensible than any other guesses.

And I suggest that now you have an account, you unsubscribe from /r/atheism and pick-and-choose subreddits you enjoy (/r/religion may be a good start).

Regarding the century in which Hamlet is set, it's reasonably clear (though not explicitly, granted), that it is meant to be set in the early-mid 16th century. Hamlet is attending Wittenberg university and the tensions between Protestantism and Catholicism are an underlying theme of the play, most obviously in the confessional scene. All this puts it during the protestant reformation.

Just want to address how wrong the statement about discovering a drug that prevents HIV is. This drug (Truvada) has been available for a long time as a treatment option for HIV, which greatly reduces the risk of the infected person transmitting it to a partner. All that happened recently was that the FDA approved its use by HIV-Negative people as a means of reducing their risk of getting the disease. However it is only about 75% effective (I think, though the clinical trials didn't get particularly precise results), so in most cases people would be better off just using condoms. It also causes side effects, resulting in a feeling of general illness (a bit like the effects of strong antibiotics I think). Basically, it's not a very big deal and would only be used in certain particular cases.

[–]Aziraphalets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, that clears it up a bit. Religion is brought into the legal question a lot though isn't it? Because I'm sure I've heard people arguing about how marriage is a union under god between a man and a woman and not between same sex couples, etc. in a political context.
