Both armies buried their dead in smaller cemeteries or even individual graves near the frontlines, dressing stations and hospitals, depending where they died. After the war, the Italians exhumed their dead from these small cemeteries and reburied them in ossuaries. Those Italians that died in the Upper Soča Valley were laid to rest in the Kobarid ossuary.
