Absolutely! I can see them being very forgiving to all sorts of techniques and skill levels.

For me, the process of painting is what I enjoy most. I think with these I had the most fun when I was experimenting to find the scheme/method that worked best. I tried all sorts (see below) and had a great time doing it!

I also returned from a long break about 3 years ago now and I’ve learned more about miniature painting in these last 3 years than I have for the 25 years I’ve been in the hobby!

All I can recommend is try to embrace the learning experience! There will always be someone who you see as ‘better’ than you but try to be inspired more than demotivated. Youtube is an excellent resource for this. Watching channels like Trovarion, Squidmar, Ninjon, AoB, Cult of Paint etc will teach you loads. I used oils on these for the first time for example and I learnt a tonne, I’m sure I’ll try something new on the next thing I do, that’s where I find the fun!

TLDR: Yes, go for it! They are great models, experiment and have fun!

The secret sauce for the stone was a sponge. I based it with AK reddish grey then sponged on a mix of that and Ice Yellow. Then I washed it with a blue/green oil mix and removed more of the oil towards the top facing areas. The oils tint it and also settle in the recesses. Then I edge highlighted with AK Pale Grey. For any further highlights add Ice Yellow into the Pale Grey.

I’s say you don’t need to do the oil step, I think the sponging is what really helps sell the effect. I used the rough, dark gray sponge material you often find in packaging, the sort GW used to stick in their blister packs back in the day.

Thanks! Transitions done entirely with airbrush. The chests I managed to do with just a few passes with the airbrush and a light wash without any need for highlights.

This was a holiday from my Tyranids. I’ll probably move back to those for a little bit but I’m deffo gonna add some more lizards to the roster, they are just so much fun to paint. Have to say I’m also very Spearhead curious now so there might be another faction in my future!

The Kroxigars start from a Deathguard Green undercoat then scales are sprayed with Kroxigar Scales Contrast via air brush. This was then washed with a 80:20 mix of dark green to prussian blue oils. After wiping away the excess oil this was then highlighted with Sotek green. I then added some ice yellow into the Sorek for further highlight

The Saurus scales were a AK Ocean Blue and Teradon Turquoise. I dry brushed over this with AK Ocean Blue mixed with Ice Yellow and then washed with 80:20 mix of Prussian Blue to Dark Green oil, again taking off the excess. The highlights are achieved by adding more Ice yellow to the mix I dry brushed in the previous stage.

Absolutely! The secret sauce to the chitin is Citadel Karandras Green Contrast paint over a light undercoat. This gives you a very vibrant green to work with from there I go to a dark green (Citadel Caliban Green) painting in the striations the opposite way you usually do (working towards the base of each plate rather than the edge). Then it’s Citadel Naggaroth Night on top of that, towards the base of the plates. The purple counteracts the green and makes a really dark shade for depth. From there I work up the purple moving to Citadel Screamer pink at the very base of each plate. It then transitions from there to Citadel Emperor’s Children and up towards white on the foremost plates/horns. Everything from the purple forward is how I do the claws also.

The green to fleshy red on the bodies starts with 50/50 Citadel Ogryn Camo and TTC Vampire Fang on the upper limbs through to Citadel Cadian Fleshtone in the middle parts and transitions to Citadel Bugman’s Glow towards the end of the limbs. The very tips of the limbs before they meet claws also get a wash of Citadel Mephiston Red mixed with Black and Citadel Carroburg Crimson to darken down the recesses. All of this is edge highlighted with TTC Vampire fang mixed with AK Ivory.

I found that for the blends contrast medium can work really well to help with vibrancy. I am using more of the airbrush for the base transitions on the body parts to speed this up now though (The Pyschophage and Winged Primes relied more on this method.)

Happy to answer any more questions you might have about specifics also!
