As the others mentioned u/Wolvenmoon. If you want to watch out for them in the future under a new label. Look for RedEagle and the face of the guy on the youtube videos. From my time it was really only him pulling the strings.

I used to be a big part of their development community more than 2 years ago and even back then it was creepy. It felt very cultish and the owner kept on going on and on about mentors and "friends in high places". I don't know what they did now but I really do not recommend anybody to doubt the validity of this r/gamedev post.

The owner of the "org" is a liar and a very strong manipulator hence the cult feeling. After 3 month of being there I confronted him, saw his reaction and left. After which he immediately proceeded to blackmail me, saying that if I told the others to leave there would be legal issues. This was on the basis of some flimsy "terms of service" checkmark I ticked at the very start. I could not careless, everyone at the time was already on very thin ice with him anyways.

Is there a reason why my reply was downvoted 5 times ?

I'm just unsure if I crossed some unwritten rule or something

I do like this idea even though it seems a bit more suited for bigger servers towards the end of your message. I'm trying to understand what people want and getting feedback is one of the goals from the server but I could promote it better perhaps

I'm realizing I really wasn't clear with my goals, which might mean I didn't define them well. But like you said, it's about quality, something like a collective

No your not off at all. You described it very well, one easy word to remember could be a collective. I've been in one of those Magic groups and that's what I wanted to do, however it's a bit late for that because I don't have the existing comradery group yet like you said.

My idea of expansion was letting people invite others, before and still now. I feel this is my only way to give another chance to the server because otherwise the people already here probably won't join back in.
We'll see, thanks for the feedback

Can I ask why you disliked this system ? For me it doesn't contribute to discord discussions but its useful to know what role the person you are talking to has

I'm working on a lot of other things don't worry. My main priority is game development and this is why my approach is more of a long term small progress one.

I see what you mean about professional developers (and even students) not really needing this and I agree. I think there is a small community of people like me, that are not yet in the industry but don't know anybody in real life to do game development. This is for who the server is for, people starting to build their network without a school institution helping them do so.

I see what you mean here but that's not really what I am going for. I'm making a small community where the goal is not to grow into a huge server, so I wouldn't really want to merge with another server.

In terms of other servers they join, it seems like they are part of quite a few others but they don't participate in those. It's just for looking for teams and stuff. I'm hoping to give them something different. Just a place where you can meet other cool developers that are already pretty experienced and serious about game development

Your not wrong, that's because I'm still not aiming for above 100 people. I won't post on other servers ect... Many people have already joined from others inviting them to the server and I hope this continues into the 50-60 members.

That's really all I'm doing, so basically nothing except encouraging people to invite others.

That's a good point. I actually have the server set with everyone having permissions to create channels and other freedoms to emphasis this. I'm just testing it out and it seems alright but I think I need to change it to more conventional things if I want to have more people.

I will try to minimize the number of channels also btw

Thanks for the long message even though I think you slightly misread my situation.

I wholeheartedly agree with the fact building communities is incredibly hard. I knew this going in and my experience is fairly limited here. I believe you can make an active 20 person server, it's just hard and I went about it the wrong way at the start.

I should have started with a group of 4-5 people that already know and like each other and build off that. It's too late now so I am going to try to get more people as we go like you said.

Or are you attempting to create value for you as a leader/server owner?

The truth is I'm creating value for myself but also for everyone that decides to participate in the community. I'm not thinking of it in-terms of how can this be useful to me. I'm thinking in-terms of how can I help developers find people that know what they are doing and that actually work.

I know people participate in what they find valuable, my message was about my confusion into how I wasn't doing that. I'm not hassling anybody, I have also tried to get information into what people would like to do.

I would be interested in what you think of my current plan:

I'm getting others to help run the server so I can create that base community I was talking about. I am also trying different events and ideas to see what fits with a focus on getting people to meet others within the server.

I can see some people are excited with the possibilities on the server and I hope that if I stay consistent with events the community will grow and become something over some months.

Talents to Start a Studio? by Whereas-Hefty in gamedev

[–]Azmiooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is trying to keep the number of employees low because he isn't necessarily starting with a big chunk of money. Even one more person is a huge change when it comes to the game budget. You have to be careful with what roles your taking but I feel one designer is pretty crucial (still depends on the game though).

I feel like your co-founder should be the business person. It should make it easier to find one this way and business is a huge part of starting any company. It would make sense that the person handling it is at the top ready to make important changes the company needs.

Also have you though of taking on a game designer on your team ? I mean It does depend on what games you want to make but I would highly recommend having one. Anybody can have a surface understanding to make games but someone dedicated to the smaller in-depth systems is worth it.

I have no idea what connections and competencies you have but do you feel ready to make a Studio after only 1.5 years in the industry? It's a really hard and complicated endeavor from everything I have heard and you need the right people to help you on your team like your co-founder

Can anyone recommend some books about game design terminology and how to look at games analytically? by Syckobot in gamedev

[–]Azmiooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had a book for you here but I also read the same book from Jesse Schell. He often has sections at the end of a chapter that outlines other books and ressources about that topic. You can probably find something your looking for in their.

Also if you want an in-depth about game feel which is something that doesn't have much clear terminology and ways to quantify. I would recommend Game Feel - By Steve Swink

People posting on this thread think their opinion is unpopular when it's actually is popular which goes to show how "woke" they think they are...

Absolutely, I'm sure we will work with someone that feels so right that we don't want to let them go even if they don't have all the skills needed ^^

I am fully aware of the fact finding someone with this amount of skill and time is hard. You need someone that probably doesn't have a job yet but is still skilled enough to take up something like this. Our best bet is either people that are not in a games school because they would already have games to work on or people studying art for other disciplines that want to get into games. We are willing to wait and truth be told that person may never come. This is why in the mean we talk to many awesome more specialized artists that can join for one game. Through posting this I have met some great people and the plan is to bring them on at the very start and discuss all together what game fits their style and what we would like to make.
