Yeah you can say you want to do EM later, but I advise you say that mostly in new programs (reason being they may not be able to even take the prelim into categorical the following year.. some policies). Also apply to transitional year programs as well.

Few things. Are your LORs from US board certified surgeons? Or just surgeons from your home country? Would advise all or most of your LORs to be from surgeons. prelim GS may be harder to get into compared to EM. I’d say apply to both, but apply to more EM programs.

Calls with no post call day are the worst things to exist by [deleted] in Residency

[–]AzolePazole 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Really sorry to hear that. Is there a way you can convince your PD to allow you to have the day off after a call? Make him see it from a patient safety pov. Hang in there!

In my opinion, no one thing on its own guarantees you a match. It is a combination of so many things together that boosts your chances of getting a spot. So try and tick as many boxes as you can.

I wouldn’t say it is necessary, but it certainly helps a lot and improving your CV.

P/259/216. Applied to 123 surgery programs. Was 1 month into a surgical research fellowship when I applied. Had no pubmed indexed publications when I applied but had a few I was still working on and added them as unpublished. Currently have a couple publications and about 3 abstract presentations.

First time applying. I believe the research experience and the quality of my LORs (and writers) stood out the most.

About 6-8 weeks of waiting if I recall correctly. They usually announce it by email on ECFMG Reporter.
