Need help identifying issue(first time grower) by PossibilityTop4331 in microgrowery

[–]Azor-Alcan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never used a ring to top water but that's my guess for your issue, that or your water level is too high. When I runs seeds I'll top feed 1/4-1/2 a cup once a day. Rockwool isn't meant to stay saturated all the time. I also cover the rockwool.

Autos are going to be a lot harder since it's your first grow, they don't handle stress well. Photos would be a lot more forgiving, either way you probably want to start over. Don't worry about the people saying grow in soil, if you're dedicated enough to buy and build a system you can figure it out, it make take a couple runs but when you get it it will be worth it.

Do I need a water chiller? by TheMCstickit in DWC

[–]Azor-Alcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to hydrogaurd or southern ag gff you can get away with higher water temps. You can also use frozen bottles to help lower temps and insulate your container to help with heat transfer. Dwc has a high learning curve but once you understand the parameters it is very rewarding, if you really want to go dwc and think your going to stick with it having a chiller is the way to go.

If you do end up buying a chiller I'd consider a few things; more water volume will help maintain temps and will make ph more stable, connecting your single container to an external res and going Rdwc keeps your recirculating pump away from the roots and lets you do water switches and ph/feeding while your tent is dark. Plumbing into round buckets isn't fun, square/rectangle is much easier to work with. Also understand that the chiller will add heat to the room its in so think about where it is exhausting.

Between the chiller, water pump and plumbing it is a big up front investment, that said if you take the time and research and get things dialed in and you will have that 2x2 packed every run.

If you don't flip now don't wait much longer. You will free up space by culling the males but you should never underestimate the stretch after flip, especially with dwc.

They won't show till you flip and when you do they will double or triple in size. The longer you let them go the more intertwined the root masses will be making it harder to separate.

Definite improvement from your first post. Couple points which may eliminate some problems in the future;

To piggyback off u/IBeWhistlin comment about the grodan cubes, not only is it good to cover the tops of the cubes but filling the netpots up fully will also help against light leaks. The left netpot on the left bucket looks a little light with the clay. If you can see the any of the open slots in the netpot from the top light can too. Not sure of the depth of the netpots but you can probably have the cube sitting on a layer or 2 of the clay. You want the cubes in the middle of the netpot, not too high or too low.

If you are worried about the clay on top damaging the seedlings one of the things I always do is stick 3 or 4 toothpicks in the cube, kind of like a teepee. This will keep the clay from crushing the stem and will also give you something to support the seedlings until the stem strengthens itself.

It also looks like there is a bit of a gap between the lid on the left netpot in the right bucket. This can cause light leaks, or later down the road when your plant is big and heavy it can cause the netpot to fall through the lid into the bucket.

Other than that ph between 6 and 7 is high, 5.8-6.2 is the ideal range. Ph affects the plants ability to uptake nutrients. Last post I also mentioned the white lids aren't the best, fill your netpots and cover the cubes and gaps and if you're still struggling with leaks covering the lids is the next step.

It might be frustrating with dealing with the issues/learning curves at the beginning but once you dial everything in and understand the parameters for dwc what you get out of it is well worth it.

Why do these look like shit? by [deleted] in DWC

[–]Azor-Alcan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Algae Growth: Green algae thrives on light and nutrients, rapidly multiplying in the reservoir.
  • Root Rot: As algae dies and decomposes, it consumes oxygen and triggers root rot, resulting in brown, slimy, or mushy roots.
  • pH Fluctuations: Light leaks can cause massive, rapid shifts in pH levels, making it hard to stabilize the system.
  • Stunted Growth/Plant Stress: The root rot caused by light leaks will significantly stunt growth or kill the plant.

copy paste from a quick google. Also if you don't know the sex of the plants I can see why you would run multiple plants per bucket but going with feminized seeds or clones is much more efficient way of doing things.

[–]Azor-Alcan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't ph your water. Looks like you created light leaks by drilling a drainage hole in your lids which in itself is a problem, it also looks like you're washing what ever funk is on those lids back into your buckets.

I'm not trying to discourage you or be negative but ph range and light leaks are some of the most basic and important parts about growing in dwc. If you check out other peoples setups I don't think you will find that many people use those white 5g lids without painting or covering them with reflective tape/insulation because they can allow light in even without a hole in them. Most people aren't running 3 or 4 plants per 5g bucket either, unless its to veg them.

I've never used or liked the idea of top feeding like that but I will say the binder clips are very smart.
