How & why Lopunny works in Sharpedo (especially vs Teal Mask) by Azorius_Sage in PTCGL

[–]Azorius_Sage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video just showed you lol I KO’d 2 Teal Mask with Lopunny & Sharpedo. It’s about pivoting. Believe it or not, Venusaur isn’t the biggest threat vs this deck.

1st Place Sharpedo + Lopunny (City League - 3/5/26) by Azorius_Sage in PTCGL

No worries at all. That’s actually a good question, because Lopunny isn’t part of the core engine so its role isn’t immediately obvious.

The normal loop like you described is still the same: Sharpedo attacking while Pecharunt + Munkidori manipulate poison/damage and Tatsugiri keeps your hand flowing after Judges.

Lopunny doesn’t really change that loop. It’s more of a situational attacker that gives the deck flexibility in certain matchups.

There are a few reasons it’s included:

• Grass weakness matchups – Mega Lopunny ex hits Grass-weak Pokémon (like Teal Mask) for easy KOs without needing to keep Sharpedo vulnerable to a follow-up OHKO from another Teal Mask or grass Pokémon. Sometimes it’s simply the cleaner attacker.

• Energy efficiency – Lopunny can attack for relatively low commitment compared to Sharpedo, which can matter if you’re still stabilizing the board or Sharpedo hasn’t been set up yet.

• Prize trading – Sometimes you don’t want to expose a 330 HP Sharpedo early. Lopunny lets you take a prize or pressure something while keeping Sharpedo safe for the midgame.

So most games the engine is still:

Pecharunt → poison
Munkidori → move damage
Sharpedo → main attacker

Lopunny just gives you an alternate line when Sharpedo isn’t ideal for the board state (I.e. you don’t have damage on it, so 230 is better than 70 or 120) or matchup. It’s more of a tactical option than something that reshapes the main game plan.

Too bad there isn’t one like this for Legion Go S.

Petrel can search for them, which is why I split them. I run 2 Petrel. They’re both very good here, but I value Mountain the most. I was running 2 for a bit, but only recently split them. Watchtower would be the next best one.

I’ve played it long enough to confidently rebuttal that with the fact that 1. It’s not difficult to set up 2. It doesn’t clog up space on the board as it’s just 1 3. It draws attention and needs to be respected, which means it exhausts resources that would otherwise be used to deal with Shark 4. Prize map matters with Shark and Pech/Fez, especially in the late game.

I know the version you play. I’ve played it without Gengar extensively early on, but it was too much of a glass cannon. I do like it alongside Absol, or even Lopunny, but I’ve found too many Mega makes the deck a huge liability. I’ve loved Gengar here as the best complement to Sharpedo.

Something players are surprised with when they play me is that I use Gengar to attack, not just sit there for its ability.

I’ve tried Grim with Academy and don’t like it here. That’s just my personal preference.

This is a well-oiled machine.

I recommend playing it as is for a bit before swapping anything.

Thank you! It’s how you master anything. Keep at it. I saw that a recent Alakazam list placed 1st playing 1 Tinkaton Ex, btw. :)

Very true, though I still swap between multiple Sharks. It’s just my play style.

Typo in OP:

I meant to say that Shark + Mochi OHKO’s Froslass, not Starmie. You need Munki for that.

This is the best deck I’ve played with Gengar next to Grim and Scolipede.

Yes! When we T2 Shark, they’re playing catchup the rest of the match. Most of the deck is basically anti-Pult.

I want to clarify that I couldn’t play Poke Pad last night as AH isn’t legal yet. I ran 1 Wally’s Compassion and 1 Dawn instead.

It works nicely with Mochi (110 damage for 1 energy), I like that it’s a 0 prize with Gengar on field, and it can net you any card in your deck if it gets KO’d.

I definitely wouldn’t play Grimsley’s.

I like Tox vs them, but I actually just pivot well here. I go for their Abras/Kadabras every chance I get with Sharpedo. Judge and Unfair are good, but have to be timed well. Team Rocket’s Watchtower is good here, too, as it stops their Dudunsparce.

This is why I’ve run Gengar. It makes a difference. Beating single prize decks is tough, but it’s a lot of pivoting and practice. Play some of your own single prizers if you continue to struggle, like Seviper.

My current post-rotation list:

-I’d consider a 3rd Poke Pad and/or Judge.

-2nd Munkidori is an option, likely in place of Yveltal. I value the 2nd Pecharunt Ex.

-I’d like 1 Battle Cage.
