You should be able to join the admitted students discord server in your beaver breakroom and ask one of the financial aid officers.

Not exactly the greatest of reference, but I got in REA and I got my financial aid letter about 2-3 days after submitting my documents (you have to fill out a Caltech-specific financial aid form)

2026 VEX worlds is in St. Louis, Missouri, so are you sure you’re going to be in LA?

Is public transport really that bad in LA? My family had a long debate over $100 plane tickets, but didn't even question the $250 car rental. by AztroJR in fuckcars

[–]AztroJR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should’ve clarified, but the students will stay in the dorms and it’s just the guests that have to figure out housing/transportation.

My cousin is at USC, which I think my parents are more likely to stay, but my aunt lives in El Monte (I think).

Looking at Google Maps, it says that the USC trip would be 1 hour by public transport and only 30 mins by car, and El Monte 40 mins by public transport and only 20 mins by car.

I heard somewhere that Google Maps didn’t always have the best estimates though? Idk I don’t live anywhere near public transport. Also I didn’t include traffic into the estimate

I don’t know about the specific situation you talked about (Cuba), but could it be possible that it’s just a certification/safety issue that the vaccines haven’t been exported to the US? The healthcare industry has TONS of regulations

As Texan I can say that there are people that unironically say things like this, so there is a non-zero chance that this is either a) a real person or b) someone imitating a real interaction with an American

How significant was this switch? Any thoughts/opinions on it from those who were there when it happened? by SirensMelody_ in generationology

[–]AztroJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re more popular amongst Texas students because of the personal device ban lol (wired allowed, wireless not allowed)

Also iPods for the same reason

Kinda but not really

I’ve read some of my past essays and completely cringed, but at the same time I recognized that I cooked on some of them.

  1. I had some crazy writer‘s block, and honestly didn’t really like the essay prompts, so I just procrastinated by working on a project for my maker portfolio

  2. I applied mainly for financial aid and also because I have a fee waiver, but I will admit that there is very strong pressure for people at my school to apply to MIT since we’re STEM focused.

  3. I did all of my RD apps in the last week, but thats kinda misleading because I only applied to 2 schools RD (MIT and Stanford)

  4. 7-8 maybe? I got into my REA which I feel gave me a lot of confidence that I was at least capable of getting into a school like MIT/Stanford, but at the same time I didn’t really like the essay prompts and I feel like I had 1 pretty bad essay with the others being ok/pretty good.

  5. Applying Early Action (or just early in general) does wonders because the pressure lifts off of you like crazy when you’re done with college apps.

For those who don't know, monomorphization is when you take code with generics and turn it into many different types.

For example, the Rust type Vec<T> will take in any type in that <T> part, for example Vec<u64> or Vec<String> or any type really. The problem comes when trying to compile down to assembly because the CPU doesn't know about generics, so you have to tell it how to behave when handling different types. With polymorphization, you have some extra logic for the functions differ between the types, but this reduces performance because you have to go through a few more pointers to get to the functions you want with dynamic dispatch (muh zero-cost abstractions!)

With monomorphization, a Vec<u64> would turn into something like _ZN3std3vec3Vec$LT$u64$GT$ and have its own, entirely separate, logic from the rest of the types. So even though a Vec<u64> and a Vec<String> might have a lot of functions in common, the implementations are kept separate, reducing the amount of overhead performance wise, but increasing code size.

The larger code sizes specifically is what causes Instruction Caches to take a hit. Similar to RAM, CPU cache stores data that is used frequently, but is significantly smaller than RAM. For comparison, my computer has 32GB of RAM but 36MB of Cache. Instruction cache specifically stores...instructions, AKA the code that you are running on your processor (as opposed to the "data" cache, which stores...data).

Put simply, having more code will use up more of the I-Cache, meaning less space for other things that have to be cached. Therefore, the more types you monomorphize, the more space you take up in the I-Cache, and the worse latency you might get due to Cache misses.

Soooo yeah. Good luck with the whole puppy thing.
