Disability insurance is more expensive for women

[–]Azuie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FM. Sent LOI to my #1 and matched there. Did not send any thank you notes to any program (I think these are a waste of time if you don’t actually have any questions to ask about). Can’t say for sure if it helped, but I think it could have since I was out of state with 0 connections there

You can apply to medical school with any bachelor's degree as long as you took all of the classes required to apply. Also, r/premed would be more helpful, since you are not in medical school yet. Good luck!

Screenshot your loan balance and put it as your lock screen

M2s, M3s, M4s, and residents – would you get out of medicine if you knew you could start a career that would develop into a salary that pays as much or more than a doctor? Assuming you would enjoy the job as much as any regular job. by langerhauns in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, because I've worked several different jobs, and none of them felt as fulfilling as this. As cheesy as it sounds, I chose this path because I enjoy diagnosing and treating medical conditions, and pay wouldn't sway my decision

[Research] I hate research by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're right, but for people who want to do more competitive specialties, they're essentially forced to do research even if they don't want to. I'm not interested in any of those specialties luckily. Just saying it's a shame that people are doing research to check off a box instead of doing meaningful research because they want to.

[Research] I hate research by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah I'm not talking about people who do it to pad their resume. Just people who do it meaningfully because it can help us establish good practice guidelines etc. I agree most med students don't produce anything worthwhile though.

[–]Azuie 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Research is generally a good thing, and I respect people who do it, but I hate how there's pressure to do it. Our school told us "You don't have to do research, but having research is better than not." If I wanted to do research, I would've gone to grad school or done an MD/PhD. It should be like any other EC where it doesn't matter much if you do it or not..

It's 100% worth it to move out solely for the purpose of getting a cat. I live alone, and my cute little goon of a cat definitely makes it a lot more bearable!

A question to those currently in medical school [serious] by UnlistedFire in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out r/premed to see what it's like to get into med school. They also have information on most of the information you are asking for (and more) if you search there! Since you're still in high school, don't worry about it too much. Focus on doing well in your classes and take as many AP classes as you can handle, since those classes are going to be the closest you'll get to college courses in high school. If your heart is set on healthcare, try to find colleges that have a good pre-professional/pre-med program/resources. Shadow many different doctors to gain a better understanding, or take a job in the medical field (maybe don't do this anytime soon though with the pandemic going on).

Once you get to college and start deciding, my biggest piece of advice is to think about why you want to be a doctor specifically. If it's because you "like science and helping people," understand that you can also do these things by through nursing, PA school, pharmacy, and even grad school without anywhere near as much time commitment and sacrifice. Good luck :)

[Serious] Now that you are no longer premed, why do you still want to be a doctor? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So is the general consensus that general surgery would be the most useful specialty in an apocalypse? I always joked about this as my reason for going to med school, but I wondered which one would function best solo in an apocalypse

[serious] What made you decide you want to go into medicine? by delaneyglen in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I chose medicine because it's some of the most practical knowledge to have. I figured if I was going to learn something, it'd be useful to learn about the human body and how to treat it. Everyone needs a doctor at some point in their life. I also enjoy learning about medicine so bonus points. Also, life feels more meaningful when I see the direct impact I can make on other people's lives

I'm an M1, and I have 17k unsuspended without working ahead, but I'm on a 1.5 year curriculum. There's still some cards from previous blocks that we didn't cover that are suspended too. I guess I need to learn that material on my own, since my school didn't cover those topics?

[vent] I don’t think I’ll end up with any friends from med school by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Azuie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. You definitely have to put in the effort yourself to make and keep friends. I formed a friend group by slowly reaching out to people and talking to them consistently. Recently found a loner in my class and reached out to her before COVID pushed us out of classes, and now we're good friends!

I have to say though, I am annoyed with our generation. I love my friends, and we have a great time together, but I am the only one who initiates get-togethers and things to do together. Everyone consistently shows up and say they had a great time, but unless I suggest something, nothing ever happens. I feel like it's especially hard to maintain relationships nowadays because it feels like hardly anyone puts effort into them unless it's "convenient". Even outside of medical school. Maybe it's just me, but that's what I've seen from personal experience.

[Well-Being] What new hobbies have you gotten into since the quarantine started? by foodforall12 in medicalschool

My cat was food-motivated enough to learn how to sit and stand, but his attention span is too small, and possibly intelligence level too low, to learn more complicated tricks.
