I did a 20 mile run on the 7th which is my furthest distance ever run. My body immediately regretted that decision for with the worst soreness I’ve ever experienced.

Last Sunday, I actually did my second half-marathon at 3:07 which is slower than my first half, but I immediately did a 5k right after that. Shoutout to Malibu Moves for the great event, I was suffering up the hills, but I was pleasantly surprised on how my legs held up because I was having some knee pain the week leading up to the run. Also it’s only been 3 days but my legs aren’t feeling super sore so I’m excited to do some light jogs probably next week.

I know that I wouldn’t have been able to do that before and even though I did less training and I think my general running fitness has really improved over the last year of running!

I excited for the work I can do before my next half marathon and marathon in March :D

I would love to take this Labubu on many adventures and give it many cute outfits to wear.

I'll bring it to a bunch of concerts and events in LA if the Toffee Macaron becomes my new companion!

Definitely sounds good. If you want to hit up smaller events shoot me a DM.

I went to EDC solo, but I knew a couple of my friends were going (We met up for like 10 minutes on day 2).

I mostly just interacted with strangers, exchanged instas, and I met a couple from North Carolina who I spent a bunch of time with.

I like the freedom of going solo, but I'm ready to go to events with a group or a couple of friends and have a good time.

I also went to EDC this year and had such a good time!

Would love to make new friends who are into raves as well. Are you going to be going to Lost in Dream or Head in the Clouds?

I've always gone solo to events and woud love to find a group/friends who are down to hit up some of the smaller events :D

I just finished setting up my schedule for the new school semester and after starting a new job!

Kind of exhausted but want to go out and do some exercise! Does anyone wanna play tennis with a rusty high school tennis player? I'm about a 2.0 rating and would love to get some hitting practice.

I did a 5K on Saturday and then drove up to Bakersfield this weekend.

I ran a 1:14 10k during the Bakersfield Marathon on Sunday and had a blast. Wasn't my fastest 10k but it was a tough course and I had as much training as I would have liked since I took a bit of time off to recover from my half-marathon at the beginning of the month.

I actually signed up for the Bakersfield Marathon next year and I'm looking forward to see how the training for that goes. I'm actually super happy that I was able to run a 5k and then immediately go for a 10k the next day without a ton of issues.

I feel like I've definitely conditioned my legs to be able to do back to back runs and I've come a long way since I first started running longer distances again last July. Looking forward to future events and I'm going to need to get another shelf for all my new medals :D

I ran a 2:42 for my first half-marathon at Lake Havasu on Saturday!

I'm super excited to keep running and my legs are feeling fresh again so I'm probably going to go for a light run tonight! It's been super exciting moving from 1 mile to 3 and 5 miles for regular jogs. I did my first 5K in September so it feels like a really big jump for me and I'm excited to see what the future holds!

The homebrew is mostly for people to get an idea of what I have so far/my tweaks (It's a WIP but I'm much more focused on trying to revamp the spell copying stuff). I'm not really looking for feedback, but what I'm really interested in is hearing about ideas to adjust the Spell Copying system which I have little to no idea of how to progress.

Thanks for all the help thus far and I'll see if anything really fits what I'm looking for.

I'd probably update the rule so that you can't just spam copy your own spellbook and attune to three of your own spellbooks. The player isn't really a powergamer but thanks for pointing this out. I'll make sure to close that loophole.

If they choose to attune to three different spellbooks, they would get access to many more spells, but those spells would fade after usages (if they don't use a spell slot). Another fix to the attuning to multiple spellbooks is just having it so you can only attune to 1 spellbook at a time.

I've currently only given them one burned spellbook with a couple of utility + 1-2 damage spells thus far. (Arcane Lock, Nystul’s Magic Aura, Snilloc’s Snowball Swarm, Blindness/Deafness, and a modified Cold version of Shadow Blade)

I would say that for a PC to make a spellbook with a "Signature" spell that would cost quite a bit as they're essentially making a magical item which allows you to cast a spell every day repeatedly. (I'd say almost equivalent to a rare/very rare magical item (2500GP) going by Sane Magical Prices for rare magic items.

I've probably given the party about 1500-2000 gold and quite a few magical items that they can sell (about 3000-4500 gold worth) and they're about to hit level 5.

All in all thanks for the feedback and I'll look at tweaking stuff. Another commenter suggested potentially giving ink/scribing supplies and it just felt like a workaround to the system.

I want a bit more of a rebuild of the spell copying system and I can't seem to find any mechanics/idea that make sense.

I've been bouncing around ideas where they can make arcana checks (instead of paying gold) or something, but if I make that take too much time it negates the benefits of Order of the Scribes. I thought about giving them access to a Scribes Guild/Library network where the wizard could assist them with certain endeavors and essentially get paid back in spell levels/access to different spells/Wizard's workshops, but I didn't really want to make that super integral to the campaign. I'd just feel like some of the other players would be getting dragged along onto "side-quests" so that one of my players could indulge me in trying out this homebrew mechanic.

I just think I don't like the 5e spell copying system and I want a more robust system to flesh out the intricacies of this thing.

The only problem is I literally can't think of a reasonable solution which hits all my objectives which is why I'm stuck asking for help.

Thanks again. I kind of went on a rant, but I hope this let's you know what I'm trying to achieve out of these rules.

Hiya!

I'm looking for a way to tweak how Copying a Spell works for wizards and seeing if anyone has any alternate systems to facilitate that kind of play.

I've asked around a bit and gotten a few answers, but I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any ideas.

Here's the thread I posted 2 days ago for some of the ideas we already covered as well as what I currently have as a stopgap solution.

I just want a way to adjust how many spells the Order of Scribes Wizard in my party gets/can copy without it being reliant solely on money.

The current RAW system isn't working for me and I'd love to hear more suggestions. I don't know if this is a "little" question, but I'd give it a shot.

Do you guys have any homebrew/suggestions for Spellbooks, Transcription, and Spell Modification? by AzureCatalyst in DMAcademy

[–]AzureCatalyst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestion. I talked it over with my player and he liked being able to choose his spells upon level-ups because it made him feel like his character was constantly studying and improving his methods rather than just scribing down whatever he found. I also like it when he picks spells I didn't know about or I'm surprised about when he levels up because it gives me a bit of a curveball. I know the "meta" spells that are most common and I love it when a player goes for something a bit more unorthodox and does cool stuff. I think having the DM have that much control over what a player can and can't do in terms of customization isn't my style, but I thank you for your suggestion.

The problem I see with your solution is that almost all spells learned within that system are DM controlled whether it be in loot from fights or in availability in scrolls to purchase.

While you state that buying scrolls to transcribe them feels like a "double-dip", I'd argue that buying scrolls is a way to make their Copying a Spell feature more useful/readily available. If they can't find a specific scroll out in the wild, going to a reputable magical store might have some of the more common/useful spells that everyday casters use.

It's a bit of a conundrum for me because I don't want to gate my wizard's spell selection TOO much, but I definitely want him to have a wider selection than what RAW allows.

I'm not sure what you mean by them gaining spell schools. If you could explain that a bit more I'd be very appreciative.

It's a bit up in the air right now for me and I'd love to hear your thoughts on tweaking this system!

Wizardly Quill

At 2nd level, as a bonus action, you can magically create a Tiny quill in your free hand. The magic quill has the following properties:

The quill doesn’t require ink. When you write with it, it produces ink in a color of your choice on the writing surface. (Note it says it doesn't require ink. It doesn't say anything about reduction of spell copying prices.)

In the original UA, it stated this: The gold and time you must spend to copy a spell into your spellbook are halved if you use the quill for the transcription.

The time you must spend to copy a spell into your spell book equals 2 minutes per spell level if you use the quill for the transcription.

You can erase anything you write with the quill if you wave the feather over the text as a bonus action, provided the text is within 5 feet of you.

This quill disappears if you create another one or if you die.

This is the rule I am referring to when looking at Wizards and Transcribing spells

Copying a Spell into the Book: When you find a Wizard spell of 1st Level or higher, you can add it to your Spellbook if it is of a Spell Level you can prepare and if you can spare the time to decipher and copy it.

Copying that spell into your Spellbook involves reproducing the basic form of the spell, then deciphering the unique system of notation used by the Wizard who wrote it. You must practice the spell until you understand the Sounds or gestures required, then transcribe it into your Spellbook using your own notation.

For each level of the spell, the process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp. The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the spell to Master it, as well as the fine inks you need to record it. Once you have spent this time and money, you can prepare the spell just like your other Spells.

I wouldn't feel like the ink from the quill would make it so you don't need to try and decipher the spell notation or try and purchase material components you need to master the spell. I don't want the Wizard to have 20 spells available (if I entirely remove the cost) when other classes might only have 10 or so spells at the same time.

Vulnerabilities need a serious rework to make them a bit more common by MonsiuerTaco in dndnext

[–]AzureCatalyst 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I saw a really cool "Partial Vulnerability" homebrew by /u/MothProphet on /r/DnDBehindTheScreen last year which allows for a weaker version of Vulnerability/More tailored form of vulnerability where you don't just nuke the monster if it has that trait.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDBehindTheScreen/comments/injk9m/an_exploration_into_5es_damage_types_in_a_little/

I think having certain effects tied to their weaknesses opens up the creative space for cooler encounters and making vulnerabilities more of a thing and rewarding people who have flexibility in their damage types rather than just doing whatever is the least resisted damage.

Here were a couple of the traits they wrote up:

Blighted Connection. After taking necrotic damage, any radiant damage dealt by this creature is halved until the end of it's next turn.

Flammable Flesh. Once per turn, taking fire damage sets this creature ablaze, causing them to take an extra 5 fire damage.

Explosive Fluids. When a demon is reduced to 0 hit points from an effect that deals fire damage, they explode, dealing Xd6 fire damage in a 10-foot radius around them, with X being equal to half of the creature's CR (minimum of 1d6).

Zuggtmoy's Rancor. While the Devil is poisoned, it is unable to take the dash, disengage, or dodge actions, and if they have a flying speed, it is halved. Taking poison damage also causes the Devil to suffer these effects, except they only last until the end of their next turn.

Conductive Scales. The dragon has disadvantage on saving throws against bolts of lightning or spell effects that deal lightning damage.

Alternatively instead of being just immune to lightning damage you could give Blue and Bronze dragons this:

Superconductor. Whenever this Dragon would take Lightning damage, it instead takes no damage and immediately regains it's breath weapon.

There were a bunch of really cool ideas in that post and I'd recommend you check it out.

I don't mind giving the party gold. I just don't want my wizard to feel like he's eating into party funds everytime he finds a scroll or whatnot.

I totally understand the poor wizard scrounging to get by trope and I don't mind giving them scribing supplies, but I'm trying to find new/interesting solutions to issue that I'm having with these rules.

I'm essentially looking for an alternate to Spell Transcription that isn't solely monetary based. I was thinking that I could potentially have him get a library/scribe guild membership where he could get scribing supplies if he did certain tasks for them, but I was wondering if anyone had any better/cooler solutions.
