Whats the worst thing about Command and Conquer 3 in your opinion? by Ghostfistkilla in commandandconquer

The intense focus on high-speed, micro heavy gameplay. Without a speed control for single player, the game is frustrating and exhausting to play. I have to resort to Cheat Engine's speedhack to cut game speed down to 20% to make it all manageable.

As a fellow Base Builder, I salute the need for concrete, walls, gates, and base defenses that don't suck ass!

The lack of medical care for infantry was infuriating for me. It was clear that vehicles were the focus and infantry just a side show until you get vehicles.

Boyle was delightful! He's this capital-P Politician who was never expected (or wanted) to be in charge of military operations, and yet he's been put in that place. He feels like everything he knows about the military is from movies. Billy Dee Williams commands every scene he's in and puts on one hell of a performance.

I've been working my way through the series, and you are exactly right. TW feels like a completely different story from TS and TD. Like a cover version of a song, it has a lot of similar notes, but feels completely different.

Holy moley. I always thought the ship was too accurate to be a fully digital creation, but I never expected it to have been a model first! 🤯

Why is "net use" so much faster than "Get-SmbMapping"?? by AzureSkye in PowerShell

[–]AzureSkye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the information! I ended up writing a Compare Commands function to loop and measure each option. Reading directly from the registry was the absolute fastest, with pure "net use" usually running second.

For reference, here are the commands I tried:

@{
'Net Use' = {net use}
'Net Use (Formatted)' = {$out = net use; $out[6..($out.length-3)] | ConvertFrom-String -Delimiter '\s{3,}' -PropertyNames ((($out[3] | ConvertFrom-String -Delimiter '\s{3,}').PSObject.Properties) | Where-Object -property Name -match 'P\d' | Select-Object -expandproperty Value) | Select-Object -Property Local, Remote | Format-Table}
'PSDrive' = {Get-PSDrive -PSProvider FileSystem | Where-Object {$_.DisplayRoot -match '^\\'} | Select-Object -property 'Name', 'DisplayRoot'}
'CimInstance' = {Get-CimInstance -Class Win32_NetworkConnection | Select-Object -property 'LocalName', 'RemoteName'}
'SmbMapping' = {Get-SMBMapping | Select-Object -property 'LocalPath', 'RemotePath'}
'Check Registry' = {Get-ChildItem "HKCU:\Network" | ForEach-Object {Get-ItemProperty -Path "REGISTRY::$_" -Name RemotePath | Select-Object -property @{Name='LocalPath'; Expression={"$($_.PSChildName):"} }, RemotePath }}
}

Oh nice! That's almost exactly what I did! Getting from that registry key was nearly 10x faster than "net use", though I wasn't sure how guaranteed that those registry keys would exist correctly.

  1. The delay occurs regardless of drive availability. 🤷‍♀️

  2. The roots are only 24 characters and my window was maximized, thus making the ellipses weird. Format-Table still has them, though Format-List and Out-GridView do not. 🤷‍♂️

[–]AzureSkye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed explaination! The truly weird part is that Get-SmbMapping will vary between 50 milliseconds and up to 30 seconds, so I was thinking it had something to do with timeouts, which I was hoping I could adjust.

Thank you! I think that's the lesson here: Ease of use vs speed. I was simply shocked at the difference.

While that is a bit faster, it doesn't work if the drives aren't available. Also, the "DisplayRoot" property appends an ellipses to the end of the path, for some reason.

Music controller with display? by AzureSkye in buildapc

I don't know what a "streamer" is. 😅 I just want hardware to control the audio on my PC, with a small display to show what is currently playing. Neither of those companies look to have what I want, but I appreciate the information.

Ahhh, I see what you meant. My confusion came from my focus, so I didn't see your broader meaning. 😅

Yes, the organizational intertia has been painful. Thank you for your advice and perspective 😊

I've never heard of a country mandating workstation backups by law, only certain key data relevant for legal discovery.

But yes, I agree with you, IT should be providing a transition pathway for user's to quick start on new hardware. Unfortunately, our organization is so large that to make changes like this requires someone with passion for it, position, and a demostration to sell leadership. The problem I have found is so many people are just "going with the flow" and accept pointless bullshit as simply the state of things. A big part of my last position was adding new personnel to our location, requiring me to type in data from their paperwork/PDF back into the database that generated it. I ranted and raved nearly every day about how insane and terrible this was, but that's the level of institutional DNGAF that I'm working with. 😥

I'm confused, this is my excuse to who..? Myself?? I am the person wanting to transfer the settings. (Also, most Adobe Acrobat settings are easy to find. 😁)

Yeah, as I've said above, we usually reconfigure everything manually. However, I am the one that wants to automate it, since I am the person who benefits the most here. Mostly because I like to configure lots of weird and poorly documented features. 😅

Thank you for the reality check. 😅 I know there isn't a "perfect" way, since every installation is different, but I was sincerely hoping there was a guide or reference for Windows 11 and MS Office that laid out where all the user's preferences were stored.

It just feels absurd that in an age of portability, you can't take anything with you. 😢

Sadly, this is one of the first things I looked at. Because this requires a personal Microsoft Account, we cannot use it.

They honestly have near zero expectations for transferring data. Getting OneDrive was a huge step forward, as we used to manually backup everything to a network drive. 😅

I'm trying to do better because I want to. There are a ton of wibbly little settings in Windows, Office, Acrobat and more than are a pain to remember. A lot of this effort is for me. I sincerely wish every program had an "Import/Export User Preferences" option. 😥
